CHARLESWORTH,
Hector, 1945
Thursday, December 30, 2004 - Page S7
Editor, critic and writer born in Hamilton on September 28, 1872.
A newspaperman with a specialty in music and drama criticism,
he became editor of Saturday Night magazine in 1926. However,
in 1932 he made his mark when he was appointed the first head
of the Canadian Radio Broadcasting Commission, which was later
to become the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. As an art critic
he was best known for having once viciously attacked the Group
of Seven at a time when his peers largely worshipped the painters.
Strangely, he was also remembered as being a "ringer" for the
portly and bearded Edward VII.
