Prospector and gold-mine owner born on December 23, 1874, at
Sangerville, Maine; 1898, took part in Klondike gold rush; 1912,
discovered gold at Kirkland Lake, Ontario; developed mine into
one of richest in world; abrasive manner made many enemies; 1935,
moved to Bahamas; 1939, became baronet; murdered at his home
near Nassau; body found pummelled by miner's pick and partly
burned; crime never solved.
