JAGLA,
Marian
Marek
Surrounded by family, Marian Marek
JAGLA died peacefully on April
24th, 2003 in his 94th year. Joining his predeceased wife Czeslawa,
Marian is lovingly remembered by his sister Teresa, son Roman
(Dana), grand-children Diana (Kenneth) and Peter (Sandra), and
great-grandchildren Harmony, Ken and Konrad. A remarkable man
and pioneer, Marian lived every moment fully and truly. He saw
the marvel and teacher in everyone and everything, from his great-grandchildren
to the smallest of God's creatures. Born in Jarocin, Poland,
Marian always recognized the power of one's mental and physical
will. He survived 5 years in World War 2 concentration camps
through courage, selflessness, humour and positive resolve, traits
he practiced during his entire life. Immigrating to Canada in
1951, Marian developed an immediate passion for his new home
forming a strong patriotic duality for Canada and Poland. For
nearly 50 years, Marian dedicated himself to the Polish-Canadian
Scout Movement and the teachings of culture and clean living
to the community's youth. He satisfied his love of sailing, sports
and children by starting a Sea Scout Troop (Baltyk) in 1957 and
(Giewont) 10 years later. Marian equally devoted himself to the
reformation of his homeland - serving as Secretary General of
the Skarb Narodowy (Polish Congress in Exile) and the Rada Narodowa
(National Advisory Committee to the Democratic Government of
Poland). At age 85, Marian began work on the 'Szare Szeregi Monument'
in Kaszuby, Ontario, to commemorate the 10,000 Polish Girl Guides
and Boy Scouts who gave their lives in World War 2, particularly
those who fell during the 1944 Warsaw Uprising. In true form,
he completed the task within a year. Less than a year before
his death, he received two medals from the Consul General of
Poland: the Sursum Corda Medal for lifetime achievement in cultural
activities and social services; and the Order Usmiechu (Order
of Smile) presented to individuals who go through life with a
positive attitude and 'vow to keep smiling and bringing joy to
others.' And he continues to do so. In lieu of flowers, donations
to the 'Szare Szeregi Monument Fund' would be appreciated. Send
cheque to the Charitable Foundation of the Canadian Polish Congress,
288 Roncesvalles Ave., Toronto, Ontario, M6R 2M4 with the words
'Szare Szeregi' written on the cheque. Viewing at Turner and
Porter Chapel, 436 Roncesvalles Ave., Toronto, on May 8 and 9
between 6 8p.m. (Rosary begins at 6p.m. on the 9th). Funeral
service will be held at St. Casimir's Church, 156 Roncesvalles
Ave., Toronto, on Saturday, May 10, at 12 noon.
