Senior of Whitefish River First Nation, Birch
Island who passed on to the Spirit World on Friday, December 20, 2002
at the Manitoulin Health Centre at the age of 71 years. Known for
his gentle spirit and kind sense of humour, he enjoyed spending time
with his family, fishing, hunting, bingo and home projects. He
worked for E. B. Eddy for 20 years before retiring in 1996. He also
served several terms as Band Councillor on the Whitefish River Band
Council and was President of St. Gabriel's Parish Council for many
years. He was honoured as an Elder and Eagle Staff Carrier of
Whitefish River First Nation. He was of the Eagle Clan and his
Ojibway name he proudly carried was Ogimas, given to him by his
father when he was a young lad. He played many years with the
Sheguiandah Bears and was an avid supporter of minor hockey. Much
beloved husband of 41 years and best friend of Mary Grace (nee
MANITOWABI.)

Rolf died, as he lived, with grace, courage, humour and dignity,
at home on April 18th, 2003, of advanced prostate cancer. He

Rolf was born in Hamburg, Germany, on September
28th, 1931. He emigrated to Canada in 1952, and completed a B.A.
in psychology at Sir George Williams College (now Concordia University)
in 1957. Following his M.A. (1959) at Columbia University, New
York, he received his Ph.D. in psychology from the University
of California at Berkeley in 1963. His advisor, Prof. Theodore
R. SARBIN
(Prof.
Emeritus,
University of California, Santa Cruz,)
has continued to be a valued colleague and dear friend, together
with Rolf's fellow graduate student, Prof. Karl E.
SCHEIBE of
Wesleyan University and Karl's wife Wendy. Rolf joined the Department
of Psychology at the University of Toronto in 1964 and continued
his research and writing in social psychology after retiring
in 1996. Rolf's work addressed a variety of topics concerning
the individual in the social system. His articles and papers
on the social psychology of test-taking, hypnosis, history, epistemology,
methodology and the discipline of social psychology all reflected
his dissatisfaction with the status quo combined with proposals
for new directions. For more than 20 years he has worked with
Linda A. WOOD
(University of Guelph) on topics in language and
social psychology (e.g., terms of address and politeness), and
most recently on a book on discourse analysis. At the time of
his death, he was working on a discursive critique of the 'Big
Five' personality theory enterprise and on stories of his experiences
growing up in Germany during the Second World War. Rolf also
took great pleasure in teaching and greatly valued the opportunity
to work for almost forty years with so many talented and enthusiastic
students, both undergraduate and graduate. Rolf was privileged
to have many long-lasting Friendships, and he was grateful for
the encouragement, help and comfort given by so many, especially

PERDUE of British Columbia. He served
parishes at Lakeview, Aurora, St. Matthew's Toronto and St. Matthew's
Islington. While posted in Toronto he was long associated with
the social service work of the Diocese. He also served in his
retirement as an Assistant at St. Nathaniel Episcopal Church
in North Port, Florida for 20 years. From 1942 to 1946 he served
with the 3rd Canadian Infantry Division. Having landed in Normandy
on D-Day, he served in Europe until the end of the war. He was
demobilized with the rank of Major. For many years after the
war he was Chaplain for the Queen's York Rangers. The service
will be held at St. Matthew's Anglican Church, Islington, 3962
Bloor Street West (east of Hwy. 427) on Monday, May 26, 2003
at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Huntsville
Memorial Hospital Foundation, 354 Muskoka Road 3 North, Huntsville,

Aunt, friend, and role model to many.
Karen possessed a passion for education working with Okanagan
University College in Kelowna, BC (1996-98), Cambrian College
(1982-1996), and Sudbury High School as a teacher (1967-72). She
earned a Doctor of Philosophy in Higher, Adult and Lifelong Education
from Michigan State University in 1997.
Karen served the Sudbury community in many roles as: Councillor,
Regional Municipality and City of Sudbury (1991-97), Governor,
Laurentian University (1985-96), President, Sudbury Chamber of
Commerce (1993-94), President, Sudbury Business and Professional
Women's Club (1986-88), and Trustee, Sudbury Board of Education (1976-85).
Her family greatly appreciates the loving care provided by the staff at Manitoulin Lodge.
A memorial service was held on Thursday, February 20 in Sudbury.
Karen's life will be celebrated with a memorial service at St.
Francis of Assisi in Mindemoya later in the summer.
