Husband, father, grandfather, veteran, volunteer, family historian. Born November 23, 1916, in Haverhill, Massachusetts. Died February 19, in Ottawa, of cancer, aged 86.
Ken COLLINS was born close to the New Hampshire border, into a family with very deep New England roots. His father Bernard (Bern) traced his roots back to the 1600s in that area, while his mother, Eleanor (Elly) McPHERSON, came from Grand Valley in Dufferin County, Ontario Elly's mother, Elizabeth Adaline FAWCETT, was the source of Ken's second name. Bern and Elly emigrated from the United States to Montreal in 1926, and then, in 1930, moved to North Bay, Ontario
In 1941, Ken graduated from Queen's University in Kingston with a degree in chemical engineering and worked in the Welland Chemical Works in Niagara Falls for two years. He then joined the Canadian army's Royal Canadian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, and rose to the rank of lieutenant-colonel. Ken's pride as a commandant of "Reemee" was revealed in his car licence plate: CREME.
Ken served overseas from 1943 to 1946, and was a Normandy veteran. After the war, he held various staff and regimental appointments, mostly in Ottawa. Upon retiring from the army in 1967, Ken was engaged by Carleton University to administer the department of planning and construction until 1982.
During his Queen's graduation week, Ken married Evalyn ROBLIN, who had been raised west of Kingston in Adolphustown Township, Lennox and Addington County. After he discovered that local historians had been mistaken about which of two ancestral Roblin roots were Evalyn's, he vigorously launched into a search of his own family roots. Over a period of some 60 years he accumulated 24 thick binders on family connections. He was able to trace back 18 generations, with King Edward 4th among his ancestors in the 1400s.
Ken and Evalyn had three children, Marianne, Bruce (a fireman who was killed in a fire in 1972), and Elizabeth; also, four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Family was very important to Ken; he was very proud of his offspring.
For almost a quarter of a century, Ken was a Friday evening volunteer at the Family History Centre of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Ottawa's Prince of Wales Drive. There he guided both experienced and novice family historians to find their ancestral records.
Recognizing the value of working with others involved in genealogy (right up there in North American hobby popularity, right after stamp collecting), Ken joined the Ontario Genealogical Society and its Ottawa Branch in 1972. After serving as the chair of the branch in the mid-1970s, he rose through the ranks to become the president of the Ontario Genealogical Society from 1977 to Ken was a prime mover of recording gravestone inscriptions in Ontario's cemeteries. As the Ontario Genealogical Society cemetery inscription coordinator from 1974 to 1992, he saw the number of recorded cemeteries rise from 1,800 to more than 5,000. A spinoff from the cemetery recordings is the much-used Ontario Cemetery Finding Aid on the Internet, which publishes the indexes of the cemetery recordings.
Ken was a member of Rideau Park United Church in the Alta Vista area of Ottawa, and had worked there for 36 years with the Boy Scouts. When his grand_son, John BAIRD (now an Ontario cabinet minister) became a teenager, he guided him to become a Queen's Scout.
Ken COLLINS was a great mentor, friend and gentleman: his contributions to family history studies, cemetery recordings and Scouting will long serve many Ottawa and Ontario generations to come.

GENSER, Bonnie
It is with great sadness that we announce the death of our mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Bonnie GENSER, who died on Sunday, November 29th, 2003. She died peacefully, without pain, with her family by her side. She was predeceased by her husband Harold GENSER who died in 1980, and her siblings Rebecca JAUVOISH, Lottie BECKMAN, Bessie MELEMADE, David LEVIN, Rosie LEVIN, Esther POLLOCK and Harry LEVIN. She leaves to grieve her death and celebrate her life, three daughters, Naomi COHEN (Jared SABLE,) Toronto, Barbara BUTLER, Winnipeg, Susan STARR (Don STARR), Toronto, London, six grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren. In addition to her immediate family, she is remembered by her sisters-in-law Esther Genser KAPLAN, Myrna LEVIN, Beverley LEVIN and Marion Vaisley GENSER, and many nieces and nephews.
Bonnie served in a leadership capacity in various areas of the community; president of the Bride's group, National Council of Jewish Women, president of Lillian Frieman Chapter of Hadassah, founder of the Shaarey Zedek Girl Guides, and later as a commissioner of the Manitoba Girl Guides. During her many visits to Israel she served as a volunteer in areas of agriculture, education, archaelogy, and social services.
She lived life to the fullest, and will be remembered for her dynamic personality, wit, charm, generosity, and infectious smile which made everyone feel special.
We wish to thank Vangie, Claire, Amy, and Ruth for their loving care.
Pallbearers were her grand_sons Scott COHEN, Paul RAYBURN, Josh BUTLER, Sheldon POTTER, granddaughters Hally and Misha STARR, and nephews Michael and Daniel LEVIN. Honorary pallbearers were Don STARR, Jared SABLE, Perry RAYBURN, and Mayer LAWEE.
Rabbi Allan GREEN officiated and her granddaughter Leanne POTTER spoke on behalf of the family. Mary CHAMBERS McQUAY
In loving memory of Mary Chambers McQUAY, April 9, 1916 to May 3, 2003.
Mary McQuay, a resident of Mindemoya, died at her residence on Saturday, May 3, 2003 at the age of 87 years. She was born in Peterborough, daughter of the late George and Mabel (FOLEY) TURNBULL.
Mary graduated as a Registered Nurse in 1942 and worked in hospitals in Kingston, where she met Jack McQUAY, who was an intern at the same hospital. They married in 1944, and lived in Kingston before moving to Mindemoya in 1947. Jack began his medical practice in Mindemoya and Mary assisted for many years running the office. Mary had a warm, friendly manner and enjoyed socializing with her many Friends. She will be remembered for her dedication to her family and to her community. Mary participated in and supported many community activities over the years. She was accomplished in sewing, knitting and baking, and often contributed her home-made items to bazaars and bake sales. She volunteered for the Red Cross, the Mindemoya Hospital Auxiliary, Meals on Wheels, and the ambulance service. She enjoyed gardening, and participated in the Mindemoya Horticultural Society flower shows in years past. She was active in the local Women's Institute. An enthusiastic member of the Mindemoya Curling Club, she continued curling until she was well into her 80s, while in the summer she enjoyed golfing. She was an avid bridge player in the local bridge club. She was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Anglican Church, where she sang in the choir for many years, and participated in the life of the parish through the Anglican Church Women's group. Always interested in crafts, she created many beautiful pieces in pottery and paper tole crafts.
Dearly loved and loving wife of Dr. Jack McQUAY. Loved mother of Marilyn (husband Martin CHILTON) of Kingston, Paul (fiancée Marion CARROLL) of Fort McMurray, Alta, Janice McQUAY of Toronto and Mindemoya and Betty McQUAY of Toronto. Also survived by Athena McQUAY of Edmonton. Proud grandmother of Peter McQUAY, Jane HOEKSTRA (husband Terry,) Stephen McQUAY and Jim CHILTON and great grandchildren Ethan, Sydney and Liam. Dear sister of Reta CONRAN, Gladys MITCHELL (husband Charlie,) Bruce TURNBULL (wife Alice,) Norma RAYCRAFT (husband Glen,) Billie McNEIL and brother-in-law Earl HARMAN. Also survived by many nieces and nephews. GRACE E. GALBRAITH
November 27, 1903 - February 14, 2003
Grace GALBRAITH, a resident of the Manitoulin Lodge, Gore Bay, died at the Lodge on Friday, February 14, 2003 at the age of 99 years. She was born in London, England, daughter of the late Edward and Emily (RAYNER) GRIFFIN and at the age of 8 years came to Stratford, Ontario with her brother and sister, through the Thomas Bernardo Child Care Organization. She later came to the Island and at the age of 14, lived and worked for William and Mable McDONALD at Providence Bay, until her marriage to James GALBRAITH on February 20, 1920. She and James raised their family on the 12th line of Campbell Township. In 1952, she and James moved to Espanola, and Ransford took over the family farm. James predeceased her in 1970, but she continued to live in Espanola until 1991, when she came to live at Manitoulin Lodge.
Grace enjoyed sewing, knitting, crocheting, tatting and canning. Loved and loving mother of Evelyn PATTISON (husband Warren LEGGE, predeceased 1972 and Jim PATTISON, 1986,) Lorma MIDDAUGH (husband Bill predeceased 2002,) Mildred McCORMICK (husband William predeceased 1998,) Leona SLOSS and husband Chester of Espanola and Ransford and his wife Lavina GALBRAITH of Mindemoya. Proud grandmother of 22 grandchildren, 46 great grandchildren and 35 great great grandchildren. Predeceased by brother Edward (Ted) GRIFFIN and sister Lilly GRIFFIN.
Friends called the Culgin Funeral Home from 1-2 pm on Monday, February 17, 2003. The funeral service was conducted at 2 pm with Reverend Frank HANER officiating. Spring interment in Mindemoya Cemetery. Culgin Funeral Home 282-2270.

Hannah Vivian McKAY
In loving memory of Hannah Vivian McKAY, September 6, 1932 to August 18, 2003. Vivian McKAY, a resident of Gore Bay passed away at the Manitoulin Lodge on Monday, August 18, 2003 at the age of 70 years.
She was born at Long Bay, daughter of the late Richard and Josephine (VANMEER) FOSTER. Vivian was very active and well known in the community, as a member of the United Church, United Church Women, Cancer Society, volunteered at the Lodge, and enjoyed curling, baking, cooking, lottery and scratch tickets, cribbage, feeding and watching birds and deer and her flower garden. She will be remembered for her love of people, visiting Friends and family, and in particular as a professional Nana.
Vivian was predeceased by her beloved husband Reginald. Loving and loved mother of Sandra and husband Rick RAYNER and Keith and his wife Judy McKAY. Proud and loving grandmother of Aaron, Stacy, Andrew, Nikki, Krystian (predeceased) and Jodi and soon expected great grandchild. Dear sister of Elaine McCAULEY, Fledda RYDER and Tom and Joe FOSTER. Also survived by many nieces and nephews. Friends called the Culgin Funeral Home on Wednesday, August 20. The funeral service was conducted in the Wm. G. Turner Chapel on Thursday, August 21 with Pastor Maxine McVEY officiating. Interment in Gordon Cemetery. Culgin Funeral Home.

Born in Regina, Saskatchewan, August 21, 1920, died peacefully on Wednesday, March 5, 2003 at Kingston, Ontario. son of the late Harold Lafayette LADD and Mary Jane STEWARD/STEWART/STUART. Predeceased by his beloved wife Ada. Father of Mary Elizabeth RAYSIDE (husband Jim) and Ian Stewart LADD (wife Elaine.) Dear ''Grampaw'' to Derek, Alexa, Ian and Renee RAYSIDE and Elizabeth and Jane LADD. Stew enjoyed a 43 year career with Alcan Aluminum Limited where he held a number of positions including Works Manager, Kingston Works, and Vice President, Personnel. He was a proud graduate of the University of Saskatchewan and served Queen's University for many years as a trustee and as a member of the Advisory Council of the School of Business. He was chair of the Conference Board in Canada Personnel Council, a member of the Advisory Committee of IMI (Geneva) and a member of the board of directors of Polysar Canada. Funeral service will be held in ''The Chapel on the Corner'' of the Robert J. Reid and Sons Funeral Home, 309 Johnson Street, Kingston, Ontario, on Saturday, March 8, 2003 at 1: 00 p.m. Reception to follow at the Donald Gordon Centre, College and Union Street. Private inurnment will be at a later date at Mount Royal Cemetery (Montreal). If desired, donations in lieu of flowers may be made to Queen's University or to the University of Saskatchewan.
