"Remembering Norman WOOD"
Often times Norman's perceived rough outward character belied a very sensitive inner self, especially when it came to the realm of nature and all growing things.
Often times during the fall, I would accompany Norman to the maple bush to cut and gather firewood. If a small sapling happened to be caught in the falling of a tree, we would try to save that tree before sawing up the fallen one. Before felling a tree, Norman would take the time to choose the space for minimum damage in the falling of the tree.
In the summer of '85, Norman and his friend Roy carved out the road to our home in Green Bay. At the entrance to the driveway, two very young Birch trees were growing within the ditch. Both trees were dug out complete with a ball of earth and replanted in on the site for the new house. I wasn't present at the time, but was delighted with the gift of these two trees.
Through the years they have both stretched out and have matured into two beautiful trees, some 50 feet in height. They too, serve as a silent memorial to a man who treasured the earth and its growing things.
Don
