Brutal beating ends bright future
Father left desolate by slaying
Man, 23, dies after restaurant fight Suspect charged in homicide
Nick McCABE- LOKOS Staff Reporter
Christopher SHELTON had a promising future ahead of him. At just 23, he'd modelled in New York and Milan. He wanted to study law at the University of Toronto. He and his girlfriend had talked about getting married.
But early Friday morning, all those hopes were shattered violently after he was beaten outside a 24-hour restaurant in Toronto's east end.
He died in hospital that evening.
The news left his father devastated.
"We've all had a really hard time. Right now, I've got these involuntary convulsions going on," David SHELTON said in an interview.
Police say witnesses: helped them identify a suspect in the slaying and yesterday afternoon a 30-year-old Toronto man was charged with second-degree murder.
The news of an arrest came as a relief to Shelton's grieving family.
Shelton's father says family meant a lot to his son.
"His natural mother has got two smaller children and (Christopher) loved them very much, and all his nieces and nephews," his father said.
"He was very involved with his family."
Christopher's parents divorced when he was 3.
Police say that early Friday, Shelton and two Friends had been out at the clubs in Toronto's entertainment district. Around 3: 30 a.m., the group stopped at the Golden Wave Chinese Restaurant at Broadview Ave. and Gerrard St. E.
Shelton and another man got into an argument, although it's unclear what sparked the dispute. Investigators say the two men didn't know each other.
As Shelton was leaving, police say, he was attacked. He was punched in the head, then fell down and hit his head on the concrete.
Police say the attacker walked away, then turned and returned to Shelton as he lay on the ground. He kicked the young man in the head.
The attacker then left in a taxicab.
Shelton's Friends called 911 and he was rushed to St. Michael's Hospital, where he was put on life support.
Yesterday around noon, a police surveillance team, canine unit and homicide officers arrested the suspect near Jones Ave. and Dundas St. W.
Tyson TALBOT, 30, of Woodfield Rd., has been charged with second-degree murder. He is to appear at Old City Hall court today.
Shelton's father recalled fond memories of his son. When Christopher was about 12, they went fishing together in Florida. At one point in his life, Christopher wanted to be a professional chef and was passionate about cooking,.
Recently, he had been working as a bartender at the Hilton Toronto hotel.
