Golfed at 103, Great War veteran passes on
By Alanna MITCHELL Thursday, December 26, 2002, Page A1
He golfed at 103, lived to 104 and died days later.
Like all but 11 of the Canadians sent to fight so long ago in the mud and disarray of the First World War, James FRASER of Morrisburg, Ontario, has died.
Mr. FRASER was one of 13 veterans of the First World War still alive this past Remembrance Day. Each of the 13 was profiled in a special report last month in The Globe and Mail.
A remarkable photograph of Mr. FRASER's papery, 103-year-old hands cradling a picture of himself as a teenaged soldier graced the front of the special report and stirred emotions across the country.
The report itself, called We are the Living, a twist on the beginning of the second stanza ("We are the dead. . .") of the war poem In Flanders Fields, sparked an outpouring of affection for those who fought so long ago.
At that time, many Canadians noted that the First World War was then dubbed the war to end all wars, yet nearly a century later, new conflicts threaten the world.
Shortly after The Globe's catalogue of survivors appeared, Peter PREET, who was 17 when he enlisted in the war and scrambled the hills of Vimy Ridge, died at 103. That left 12 in the slender roster of those left to tell the tales of the war that helped shape Canada as a nation.
On December 7, Mr. FRASER followed him to the grave.
Penny RICHMIRE, an attendant at The Hartford Retirement Centre in Morrisburg, Ontario, where Mr. FRASER lived, said he fell ill a short time ago and ended up in hospital.
All the plans at the retirement home for a party to celebrate his 104th birthday were called off. He spent his final birthday in the hospital and died less than a week later, never returning to the home, Ms. RICHMIRE said.
Mr. FRASER was one of about 619,000 Canadians sent to fight in the First World War.
Sixty thousand never made it home, dying abroad from the mustard gas, the contagion of the trenches and in the artillery fire of that ghastly war.
He enlisted at 18, the son of a gamekeeper raised in Glen Dole, Scotland, and served as a private in the British Army's 52nd Lowland Division.
A machine gunner on the front line, he refused all his life to talk about what he witnessed there.
"It was hell, that was all," Mr. FRASER told The Globe last month.
He moved to Canada in 1926 and dug pipelines until he got a job in an apple orchard outside Toronto. He never married.
Ms. RICHMIRE said he was healthy until the final days of his life, never bedridden, never dependent on others to do for him. Last summer at 103, he played golf.
And despite his taciturnity on the subject of the war in which he fought nine decades ago, Mr. Fraser remained bound to that war even in death. His memorial service took place in the James Fraser Hall -- named after him -- at Royal Canadian Legion Number 48 in Morrisburg.
The Legion men's choir, which Mr. FRASER helped to found, sang at the service. And the Legion itself, a testament to the need to remember those brave warriors of long ago, was filled to overflowing with Friends who chose not to forget.
