Mother loses second child to gun violence
'What did I do to deserve this?'
Cal MILLAR Staff Reporter
Eight months after his sister was shot to death outside an Etobicoke nightclub, Yannick Antwon ROACHE was gunned down Christmas Eve while helping his girlfriend and her two young children out of a taxi.
Yannick, 18, was standing with a 3-year-old boy in a stroller outside his girlfriend's apartment in the Jane St. and Finch Ave. W. area when he was approached by two men, police said.
There was a brief conversation and then one of them fired several shots from a handgun.
Yannick's sister, Chemere ROACHE, was also 18 when she was shot dead on March 20 outside a Rexdale nightclub.
Detective Sergeant Terry WARK of Toronto's homicide squad doesn't believe the slayings are linked, but he said he has never seen a case where a mother lost children in separate homicides.
Carol ROACHE, mother of Yannick and Chemere, was at home preparing for Christmas when a friend called to tell her of the shooting at about 7 p.m.
She raced to Sunnybrook hospital where she saw her son, pronounced dead on arrival, lying on a gurney. WARK recalled her saying "I saw him, but is he really dead?" as he and his partner tried to console her.
"I just buried my daughter eight months ago," she told the detectives. "In eight months I have lost two children."
"I can't begin to understand or feel what she's going through this year," WARK said.
Even before this year the family had known violent tragedy. The dead siblings' aunt, Audrey ROACHE, was shot dead in her apartment in 1991.
Michael Andrew CHIN, 28, was convicted of manslaughter in 1993.
Chemere ROACHE was shot in the head March 20 after several people became involved in an argument outside an after-hours club on Racine Rd. in the Kipling Ave. and Rexdale Blvd. area.
Chemere was in her vehicle in the parking lot, picking up some Friends at the doorway of the club, when gunfire erupted and she was shot in the head.
Four men have been charged in the slaying.
WARK said the latest tragedy to strike the family came at 6: 04 p.m. on Tuesday when Yannick ROACHE encountered two men outside a San Romanoway apartment complex. He had just arrived in cab from a nearby plaza where he'd done some last-minute shopping with his girlfriend and her two sons, a 3-year-old and a 2-month-old.
WARK said ROACHE was standing at the rear of the cab waiting for the woman when two men approached him.
One of the men spoke to ROACHE, then the other shot him several times in the back.
"To take a chance so close to children," WARK said. "He had just placed a 3-year-old boy in the stroller. He was standing with the stroller when he was shot."
WARK said investigators have no motive in mind but he said there's no doubt ROACHE was the intended victim.
"I think it's quite obvious he was targeted. They were hunting him," said WARK.
After the shooting, a witness told police the attackers ran to a newer-model dark blue Volkswagen Beetle with tinted windows. It was last seen eastbound on Finch Ave.
Carol ROACHE told police Yannick was a Grade 11 student at Central Tech High School and decided to leave home and be on his own so he could be more independent.
She had been looking forward to having Yannick, along with his girlfriend and her sons, at her home for Christmas.
Yannick had lived at her home with her other son, Jamall, 15, but moved out after his sister was slain.
Results of an autopsy to be held this morning will be announced at a noon-hour news conference today. Police have also asked members of the victim's family to attend to make an appeal for help in finding the killers.
WARK said that as he and his partner arrived on Christmas Eve at Carol ROACHE's home, expecting to have to break the news of her son's slaying, she simply asked, "What did I ever do to deserve this?"
Investigators said Yannick ROACHE was known to police but there is no indication he had any connection to gangs that have been fighting a bloody turf war.
WARK asked anyone who saw the shooting or knows who may be responsible to call the homicide squad at 416-808-7400, call Crime Stoppers at 416-222-8477 or go to the 32 Division police station to speak with investigators.

Boy, 11, killed at Mont-Tremblant
Ottawa boy died of internal injuries in ambulance, police say
Mont-Tremblant, Quebec (C.P.) - An 11-year-old boy from Ottawa has died after he careered out of control on a downhill ski run.
David MILLINGTON died on Saturday when he hit a rock, lost a ski and crashed on an intermediate trail.
"He had internal injuries," said Mont-Tremblant police spokesman Mathieu HINSE.
"When the patroller arrived, he was talking to them to tell them what happened. But in the ambulance, they lost him."
Police said ski-hill officials have told them excessive speed may have been a factor in the accident.
It was the first fatal crash of the ski season at Mont-Tremblant.
Hinse said the boy's death was a crushing blow to the family.
"They were there for Christmas - it's a bad story."
The trail was closed for the remainder of the day.
Mont-Tremblant is about 100 kilometres north of Montreal.

In loving memory of a dear father, Joe, who passed away 5 years ago, December 17, 1997.
God saw you getting tired,
When a cure was not to be,
So he put his arms around you,
And whispered "come to me".
Your golden heart stopped beating,
Your gentle hand at rest,
God broke our hearts to prove to us,
He only takes the best.
Always loved, ever missed.

SWARTZ, Theodore Lynn ''Ted'' -- 64, died in Toronto, at St. Joseph's Hospital, on Monday, December 23, 2002 at 1: 32 a.m., after suffering a massive stroke two weeks prior. A man with many interests, he also developed businesses in Charter Fishing, Christmas Tree Farm, and two phases of Campground/Resort Owner-Manager. He saw things that could be, and took action to make things happen. Though retired from his practice, he continued being a visionary, and wanted to develop and add life, always moving forward, not dwelling on the negative, only seeing the positive aspects. He loved to fly, though afraid of heights, and was a pilot, with membership in the American Pilots Association. Ted set goals and then accomplished what he set out to do. He flew his plane to South America, to Chelan, Washington, and many others places, crossing those things off his ''To Do'' list. He enjoyed both Power and Sail Boating also, and was a member of the Mimico Cruising Club, Toronto, in recent years.
