Died This Day
Wednesday, December 11, 2002 -- Page R9
Ron TURPIN and Arthur LUCAS, 1962
Hanged back-to-back in Toronto's Don Jail; TURPIN, 29, of Toronto had killed a police officer in a Toronto street battle; LUCAS, 54, of Detroit, had slashed the throats of a young woman and an American police informant hiding out in a Toronto apartment the executions, the last in Canada, were bungled; Col. Cyril EVERITT, a Salvation Army chaplain and witness, said in 1986: "TURPIN went cleanly. But LUCAS, the heavier of the two, had too much rope for his weight. His head was almost torn off. He was pretty well decapitated, only the strength of the sinews in the neck kept the head attached to the body. There was blood everywhere, gushing out."
