David PHILLIPS entered into rest at the Ross Memorial Hospital in Lindsay on Tuesday, June 4, 2002. Dave PHILLIPS in his 64th year was the beloved husband of Mary Lou HUNTER. Loving father of Vickie HOLDER and her husband Stan HOLDER of Woodville, Robert and his wife Michelle of Sunderland and Dale at home. Dear Grampa of Susan, Shavonne, Adam, Laura and Noah. Funeral service was held from the Thorne Memorial Chapel on Friday, June 7, 2002 at 1: 30 pm. Interment Sunderland Cemetery. PEAT, Elizabeth (Betty) (née LANG) -- Died suddenly on December 24, 2002, in her 93rd year, after a very brief illness at home. Daughter of the late Col. W.R. LANG and Edith (Daisy) HOLLINGTON, Elizabeth was the wife of the late J.R. MacDonald (Don) PEAT mother of Dr. Marjorie HENDERSON, Nora PEAT and Daniel PEAT sister of the late Dr. Janet ROSS, the late Margaret (Bunty) DONALDSON and Vernon LANG. She is survived by her three children her brother; her sister-in-law, Marjorie KAYE (John;) and her son-in-law the Reverend Harvey HENDERSON; her daughter-in-law, Iraina NEUFELD; six grandchildren, Brill PAPPIN, David Piers PAPPIN, Ben PAPPIN, Donald HENDERSON, Christopher HENDERSON and Emma PEAT; and twelve nieces and nephews and their children. She was a graduate of Havergal College and the University of Toronto (B.A., B.Paed.), where she was active in a Model League of Nations, and in anti-war work with the Youth Council. During her years in Niagara she worked as a secondary school substitute teacher, and as a teaching assistant at Brock University, and was involved with the National Ballet Guild, then with the Pelham Historical Society and the Preservation of Agricultural Lands Society. Elizabeth was active until the end, planting bulbs in her garden last week, and was heard correcting her son's grammar on the evening she died. Her family will miss her love and guidance. Special thanks to Dr. Shari FALLIS, Community Care Access Centre Niagara, and the Red Cross Homemakers who enabled her to maintain her independence. Visitation, following cremation, at the Pedlar Funeral Home, Fonthill, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. Funeral at 11: 00 a.m. on Monday, December 30th at Holy Trinity Anglican Church, Fonthill. HOLMAN, Kenneth Roy -- Born June 8, 1924 in Sudbury General Hospital, passed away at Sunnybrook Hospital December 24, 2002 of lung cancer at the age of 78. He is survived by his loving wife of forty-nine years, Phyllis (née WARD,) Cummer Lodge, Toronto, brother Gerald of Salt Spring Island, British Columbia, nephew Ron HOLMAN, Valemont, British Columbia, niece Dianne HOLMAN, Salt Spring Island, British Columbia, brother-in-law George (Anna) WARD, Summerland, British Columbia, three nieces, Lois (John,) La Canada, California, Valerie WARD, Cranbrook, British Columbia, Joy (Steve) FERN, Tsawwassen, British Columbia, and four great-nieces Sabrina and Anna HARRISON, and Stephanie and Shannon FERA. Ken rose to tile rank of Sergeant. Royal Canadian Artillery, Third Division, during World War 2. Upon his return to civilian life, he graduated in engineering from Queens University, Kingston. Following that, he embarked on a career with Canadian National Railways. One of the major parts of his work with C.N. involved placement and design surveys as well as field surveys for property acquisitions for C.N.'s Hump Marshalling Yard in Maple, Ontario. A further part of his railway career was in Belleville, where he joined the Masonic Lodge. Ken and Phyllis were married in Barrie, Ontario on July 17, 1953. He retired from C.N. at age 60 as an Industrial Development officer. His retirement brought much enjoyment golfing with Phyllis at Meadowview Golf Club and in Florida. During his later years, he developed as an artist, creating paintings and sketches of military aircraft and railway locomotives. The family has appreciated the kind care and support of the medical staff at North York General Hospital and Sunnybrook Hospital K1 East Wing. Memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on December 31, 2002 at The Simple Alternative Funeral Centre 275 Lesmill Road, Toronto (416-441-1580). Reception following. In loving memory of Elva Lauretta McGillis, June 16, 1914 to December 6, 2002. Lauretta McGILLIS, a resident of the Wikwemikong Nursing Home, died at the Manitoulin Health Centre, Little Current, on Friday December 6, 2002 at the age of 88 years. She was born in Tehkummah Twp., daughter of the late George and Laura (BAXTER) VINEY. She was a member of the United Church, loved growing flowers, especially her pansies and glads, and enjoyed knitting and sewing, having made many quilts. Lauretta was a hard working farm wife and mother, and will be fondly remembered for her pride, love and enjoyment of her children and grandchildren.
Predeceased by her beloved husband Neil McGILLIS on February 26, 1993. Loving and loved mother of June LENTIR, (husband Russ HERRINGTON predeceased,) Robert and his wife Verlie McGILLIS of Mindemoya and Rick and his wife Debby McGILLIS of Trout Creek. In loving memory of Margaret Edith LEWIS, September 1, 1916 to July 19, 2002.
Margaret LEWIS, a resident of Manitoulin Lodge, Gore Bay, died at the Lodge on Friday, July 19, 2002 at the age of 85.
She was born in Barrie Island, daughter of the late John and Mabel Edith (GAMBLE) CALBACK. Margaret was a housewife and worked on the family farm all her life until she retired to Gore Bay. She was a member of the Lyons Memorial United Church and was a long-time volunteer at the Lodge. She also enjoyed knitting and a good game of cards. Margaret was a social person who enjoyed helping and visiting many people over the years.
Dear and loving wife of the late Arden LEWIS who predeceased her in 1984. Dear mother of Ronald LEWIS and wife Nancy of Gore Bay, Marlene BURNS and husband Stewart of Gordon, Bill LEWIS and wife Gail of Espanola, Betty MASTERS of B.C., Maxine McLEOD and husband Jim of Ice Lake and Barbara ARMSTRONG and husband Scott of Gore Bay. SMART, Julia (née HOLWELL) -- After a short illness on December 21st, 2002 in her 83rd year. Julia, beloved wife of Wilson and loving mother of Claude (Carolyn). Proud grandmother of Stephen and Sarah. Sister of Mary and Ena. Predeceased by brother Lloyd, and sisters Emily and Joyce. She will be sadly missed by all her nieces and nephews.
