Dani (Angela Danielle) HARDER
By Karen HARDER Tuesday, December 24, 2002 -- Page A20
Advocate for the disabled, educator, actress, athlete. Born June 7, 1974, in Toronto. Died October 11, from complications after emergency surgery, aged 28.
Dani accomplished much with no control of her arms or legs and with no speech. Using head movements she could drive her electric wheelchair, and spell out her thoughts on to a laptop computer, in a manner similar to Stephen HAWKING. For everything else she needed help: someone to feed her, to dress her and to lift her into her chair.
Despite these challenges, Dani was determined to participate in the same activities as able-bodied people. If her brother Mathew could run the Toronto marathon, then she would too. She gathered a team of volunteers to push her through the 26-mile course. I'm not sure how many people would consent to being pushed down Hoggs Hollow hill at a run, but Dani had complete trust in her teammates. She loved the excitement of the run, and of crossing the finish line with a time of four hours, 33 minutes.
When playing cards Dani could be very independent. Her brother Luc made a card holder that allowed another player to throw down Dani's choice of cards without seeing her hand. Dani was the Euchre champ. Friends fought to be her partner. In one memorable game Dani had chosen a very handsome male partner. She quickly discovered he was a novice, at which point she began to call a lone hand every deal. "Damage control?" her partner jokingly asked.
Dani found real purpose in her life when she began working at Frontier College, helping adults learn to read. She had an intuitive understanding of each student's capabilities and designed appropriate programs. On her computer, she would speak gentle words of encouragement and help with pronunciation when listening to a student read. And Dani loved fun. The walls of Frontier echoed with laughter during her classes. Working at Frontier was the realization of Dani's childhood dream: to become a teacher, to help people in a meaningful way.
Another passion of Dani's was the theatre, both watching and participating. In 1995 she was selected for a role in Don HARRON's production of Anne of Green Gables. Speaking her lines on her computer required incredible timing as it worked on a scanning system. This experience gave her tremendous confidence to act on other stages.
On one of these other stages, she spoke on television and to reporters, in her role as an advocate for the rights of the disabled. Dani was forced to live in an institution due to inadequate community supports. She said, "I have the right to choose where I live, and to have meaningful work." She raised public awareness about the unfair restrictions imposed on the differently abled.
Heaven for Dani was being at her cottage near Huntsville, Ontario She loved to lounge in her inflated dingy, dangling her feet in the water. True to her style, she refused to be left out of any activity. Her many Friends found ways to help her participate in sailing, tubing and even the annual regatta races. Her excitement and laughs would encourage her swimming teammates to push her dingy across the finish line, often surpassing their own physical expectations. Dani had a gift: an ability to encourage people to try new challenges and realize themselves.
Life with Dani was always fun. The chores and challenges of helping her diminished when she smiled or shared her humorous one-liners. Despite her own situation, she always made sure we took care of ourselves. "Dani is the most loving and joyous person I know," said her brother Mathew. We will always remember her smiling face, her infectious laugh and her all-encompassing love. Karen is Dani's mother.
