3-year-old killed crossing street
Child struck by van while lagging behind mother and sister Family was warned not to cross busy road in middle of the block
Jim WILKES Staff Reporter -- Page A8
A 3-year-old boy was struck by a minivan and killed yesterday when he lagged behind his mother and sister as they crossed a busy North York street.
Sarjo MARONG, who would have turned 4 on Dec. 8, was dead on arrival at Humber River Regional Hospital after the early afternoon mishap on Wilson Ave., east of Allen Rd.
Fatou MARONG was holding her year-old daughter in one arm and pushing a stroller with the other as she and Sarjo crossed the street in mid-block shortly before 1 p.m.
Police say she and the infant had crossed the centre yellow line of the road, but little Sarjo didn't keep up and was clipped by the left front corner of an eastbound minivan.
They were crossing Wilson Ave. in front of their apartment building. The nearest controlled crossing is about 100 metres west, at Wilson Heights Blvd.
Neighbour Frank WRAXALL, 67, was walking outside the building when he heard a "thump."
"When I ran around the corner, the boy was on the road and the mother was screaming," he said, his red-rimmed eyes welling with tears.
"I went and got a blanket for him, but there was nothing I could do."
Neighbours said the mother had been warned not to cross the busy street in the middle of the block.
Joan BURRELL said her husband was struck by a car at the same spot last month as he jaywalked across Wilson.
"He was in a coma for seven days and he just came home a week ago," Burrell said.
"They need to put a crosswalk in or something. There's a bus stop across the street and nobody wants to walk all the way out there to the light."
But Toronto police Sergeant Roy BUCHANAN said that's just what people should do.
"We would appeal to people to cross at locations where there are pedestrian crosswalks or signalized intersections and, even then, to ensure that traffic is clear," he said.
He said the boy was the city's 84th traffic fatality this year, and the 45th pedestrian to die. For all of last year, there were 57 traffic fatalities in Toronto, 32 involving pedestrians.
At nearby Faywood Public School, where Sarjo was a junior kindergarten student, parents arrived after classes yesterday to pick up their sobbing children.
Grief counsellors will be at the school on Monday to help the students.
"It's tragic anytime," Buchanan said. "But when it's a 3-year-old child, it's doubly tragic."

STOBO, Margaret -- In loving memory of my dear mother who passed away December 27th, 1989. Do not stand at my grave and weep I am not there. I do not sleep. I am a thousand winds that blow. I am the diamond glints on snow. I am the sunlight on ripened grain. I am the gentle autumn's rain. When you awaken in the morning's hush; I am the swift uplifting rush Of quiet birds in circled flight. I am the soft stars that shine at night. Do not stand at my grave and cry; I am not there. I did not die. Sadly missed by your daughter Betty and son-in-law Malcolm WILLIAMS.
