Brantford fire kills boy, 8, and sister, 6
Mother fights for life after blaze fills home with smoke Fifteen-year-old girl escaped from upper window
Cheryl STEPAN Torstar News Service -- Page A4
Brantford--Two children are dead and their mother is fighting for life in hospital after an early morning house fire.
Another child -- a 15-year-old girl -- escaped the choking black smoke by jumping out of a second-storey window.
Neighbours watched in horror yesterday as firefighters rushed out of the home carrying the limp bodies of 8-year-old Jason PROPER, his 6-year-old sister Emily, and their 32-year-old mother, Susan. They said firefighters laid them down outside the Charing Cross St. home and tried to resuscitate them.
"There were two little bodies on the lawn. ... They were working on them for a long time," said neighbour Shirley RATHWELL. "It was really upsetting when I found out they were both gone."
The fire was especially hard on Brantford's emergency workers, who have seen a string of tragedies in the past few weeks. There have been five train-related fatalities since Nov. 5, including a train derailment last weekend that killed a woman and forced 100 people from their homes.
"It's been a very rough time," said Deputy Fire Chief Bob RUTTAN.
Emergency crews managed to revive the mother, who at first wasn't showing any signs of life, said Brantford police Inspector Jens Enslev. She was rushed to Hamilton General Hospital, where she is in critical condition in the intensive care unit.
Ashley PROPER, 15, was taken to Brantford General Hospital with injuries resulting from her fall out of the window. Their father was in the Sarnia area on business and headed back to Brantford when police told him the news, Enslev said.
The Ontario Fire Marshal's office is investigating the fire's cause. It's not believed to be suspicious, Enslev said.
Neighbours said the family just moved into the house a few weeks ago. They'd put up Christmas lights on the railing outside the small, two-storey home the day before tragedy struck.
A neighbour called 911 at 6: 24 a.m. When fire crews arrived, three minutes later, heavy black smoke was pouring from the house. Ruttan said someone met them outside and told them there were people trapped inside.
"Our crews brought them out," Ruttan said. "We have lost those children. ... Our hearts go out to those relatives."
Ann MUCKADAY was watching from across the street. Up early, she saw the flashing lights, but no flames. Then she saw a firefighter walking down the street with a child cradled in his arms.
"Her long hair was hanging down. He was carrying her like she was a rag doll," she said.
"When I saw that first girl come out, I thought everyone would make it out okay," added her 22-year-old son Greg.
"When I heard they didn't make it, it hits you like a ton of bricks."
Ruttan said damage from the fire was minimal, but smoke had filled the entire house. There was little exterior evidence of a fire other than broken windows at the front and side of the house. The house had smoke alarms, but it wasn't clear yet whether they were working.
Emily and Jason were students at Graham Bell school in Brantford. Their principal, Lorne BERRY, said the staff was shaken by the news.
"They were very, very pleasant children," he said.
Staff decided it would be best if students learned the news from their parents, rather than school staff. A crisis team will be available at the school Monday.

In loving memory of John Lawrence COLLINS, May 10, 1932-February 16, 2002.
When I was young, I enjoyed the forests where the deer run free, fields where the cattle and sheep grazed. Collins' Falls in the early spring as the mist touched my face, upper coastline of Honora Bay where the tall pine trees grow. The country store (Collins' General Store) where visitors from our communities always greeted me with "Hello, John and how are you today?" Oh, how I would be excited and laugh. Children as they walked home from the little country schoolhouse in Honora Bay. My niece Pam and nephew Brent who would always give me a hug and a kiss "Good Night, Uncle John". Then the time came for me to live at Manitoulin Lodge in Gore Bay where the staff and volunteers extended their love and personal care towards me for 25 years. I was never forgotten when the children came to read, the pets came to visit and the staff always took time to ensure I was a part of their day. On February 16, 2002 I left my earthly home to be with my family members gone before me. Thank you for all of my memories, love and care...John COLLINS.
"I will gather the lame, I will make the lame a remnant, The Lord is righteous in all His ways, and loving toward all He has made" Micah 4: 6,7-Psalms 145:17.

Andrew Cyrus BEAUDIN
In loving memory of Andrew Cyrus BEAUDIN, Tuesday, April 16, 2002, at the Extendicare York in his 99th year.
Beloved husband of Elizabeth Ann (Betty) SAGLE (predeceased 1977) and Mary SAGLE (predeceased 1983.) Loving father of Linda Ann GILCHRIST (Reg) of Lively. Proud grandfather of Daniel GILCHRIST (Alexia HANNIGAN) of Toronto and Wendy McDERMID (Robert HENDERSON) of Lively. Cherished great grandfather of Jesse McDERMID and Morgen McDERMID. Dear brother of Elsie STERLING (Arthur) (both predeceased,) Eugenia WALLACE (of Sault Ste. Marie) (Ed, predeceased,) Cress (of Sault Ste. Marie) (Clarence predeceased). Much loved uncle of many nieces and nephews. Special loved uncle of Leona and Arden BOCK and Doreen and Alec MacEACHREN (all of Sudbury.)
Andrew was born at Green Bay, Manitoulin Island on November 17, 1903. He survived his share of childhood adventure, but found school to be a "bother" as it interfered with his playtime. Arithmetic in all its forms was a mystery to Andrew but his interest in reading only grew and continued long into his adult life. Andrew and his sisters walked to school daily, but instead of finding the walk tiresome he began to enjoy the beauty around him. Even in his older years Andrew walked almost daily, and continued to marvel at God's creation. In 1928, the Wrigley Gum Corporation offered a prize of $25,000 to the winner of a 21 mile swimming race across Lake Ontario. Andrew entered, but was defeated by the cold waters. He did, however work as a lifeguard and trained in the Humber area and over the next four years raced again in Lake Ontario during the Canadian National Exhibition. In his early 30's, Andrew tried his hand at acting by playing the part of a "drunk" with the Colonel George Cox Players and over the next several years he became an accomplished stage actor. Andrew's true profession was in responding to God's call in his life a call he had felt for some time. In the mid 1940's he became the pastor of the Providence Bay Branch of the Reorganized Church of the Latter Day Saints (Community of Christ). Andrew obtained his Bachelor of Theology Decree and continued to read, write, minister and serve until he could physically no longer do so.
By the time Andrew was 90 he had performed 85 weddings, 72 funerals, 49 baptisms, served 4,800 communions, delivered over 3,000 sermons, offered 101 Patriarchal Blessings, attended 18 world conferences, 30 week-long reunions and over 35 children's camps. His joy was being with young people. They appreciated his wit, wisdom and genuine caring. Andrew took his response to God's movement in his life with great responsibility and honour. He was a man who was much loved, admired and respected and he will be greatly missed.
"Well done thou good and faithful servant."
A celebration of Andrew's life was held at the Providence Bay Community Hall, Manitoulin Island on Saturday, April 20, 2002. Cremation at the Parklawn Crematorium. Arrangements entrusted to the Jackson and Bernard Funeral Home.

John Lawrence COLLINS
John will be laid to rest Saturday April 27, 2002 at 2 pm. Cold Cemetery.
John peacefully passed away on Saturday, February 16, 2002 at Manitoulin Health Centre at the age of 69 years. Predeceased by parents Mini "Faye" (née CHISHOLM) and John Leroy "Roy" COLLINS. Loved brother of Wayne and wife Rena, predeceased by sister Joan. Dear

Guelph man killed unloading rail car
Guelph - Investigators spent much of yesterday examining a Guelph job site where a city man was killed on Wednesday afternoon while unloading a railroad car.
William Michael CHAMBERLAIN, 41, was discovered lying on the ground about 1: 30 p.m. at Safetran Canada on Edinburgh Road South. He had been using a boom truck to unload 40-foot sections of steel track.
Richard DEN BOK, a senior investigator with the ministry of labour, said that nobody actually saw what happened to Chamberlain.
"We're trying to get things pieced back together," DEN BOK said. "We don't know where he was struck or where he was standing or anything like that."
It is believed that CHAMBERLAIN, known to co-workers as Mike, was using a hand-held control box to operate the large boom, which is equipped with a claw for picking up the steel rails.
Wayne PEGELO, Safetran's Guelph supervisor, said Chamberlain - who had only worked for the company since April - was not the kind of employee who would cut corners to save time.
"We're trying to figure out what happened," he said. "He was a very safety-conscious employee; that's why we think something must have gone wrong."
Safetran is a distributor of rail products. Canadian manager Joel STEVENS flew from Winnipeg yesterday morning upon hearing of the tragedy, and company president John TALIRICO was expected to arrive last night from West Virginia.
"We want to make sure everything's taken care of properly," STEVENS said, adding that the primary concern was for Chamberlain's widow and sons, aged 14 and nine.
"We don't want to put any more undue stress on these people," Stevens said, adding that Safetran has "a good insurance plan."
STEVENS never met CHAMBERLAIN, but spoke to the man often on the phone.
"He was an extremely valuable employee," he said. "Mike was the kind of guy - you could just put a task in front of him and he'd take care of it."
DEN BOK said investigators were trying yesterday to determine whether all the equipment was working properly.
"Within a few days, we should have a better idea of what happened," he said.
