BARNES-

Searching for Jane Elizabeth
BARNES
I am writing a paper for a history course that I am taking at Queen's this year.
For this, I am researching the life of Jane Elizabeth
BARNES who lived for most of her life back of
Athens, from 1843 till her death in 1890's. This interesting woman was given the misnomer of the
"Witch of Plum Hollow". She was neither a witch nor did she live in Plum Hollow, but some early
reporter dubbed her thus and it stuck. She earned her livelihood for herself and her children by
reading tea leaves She became quite renowned throughout eastern Upper Canada and northern New York State.
I have most of the folk lore on hand now regarding Mother
BARNES, but need to search further for the facts.
"Just the facts, ma'am." With the wonderful help of John Allan of the Ontario Genealogical Website,
I have part of the 1851 and all of the 1871 censuses of Leeds County, back of Young and Escott Township,
where she dwelt in her tiny log cabin.
Now I am looking for the following information from Primary Sources :
Birth records of Jane Elizabeth
MARTIN, born in or registered in County Cork, Ireland around 1800. Presb
Her marriage records to an Irish Sergeant named Robert
HARRISON, in Ireland ?
Their passage to Canada and their life in Cobourg, Upper Canada, where they had one child, a son,
Robert, Junior , who died during the Civil War in the US.) (proof by death lists from military in US?)
Harrison died a few years later (proof by primary source in Cobourg?) and sometime later the Widow
HARRISON
remarried to David
BARNES, a Connecticut shoemaker by trade. DId they move to Connecticut?
They had 9 more children, six sons and three daughters, one of whom died, and in 1843, they moved to
Sheldon's Corners where they apparently lived on the
HOLLINGSWORTH farm.
Apparently, after a few years, Mr.
BARNES decided to give up farming and moved to Smiths Falls to live with
his oldest son, and taking his youngest son (also David) with him, too. Mother
BARNES was left to raise
the remainder of the children which she did by telling fortunes at 25 cents a time,
in her tiny cabin on a few acres of land near Sheldon's Corners, a few miles from Plum Hollow,
in the above named township and county.
Sometime before 1871, her son Williston and his wife, Lydia A. moved in to the cabin with her and
their 3 children, to look after Mother
BARNES and the cabin, while she did her fortune telling.
I still need primary source information from Smith Falls censuses regarding when her husband left
the farm and joined his son there and how long he lived there, and doing what.
I also need and birth, marriage and death records regarding the family.
If possible, I would like primary source information regarding her life in Cobourg, until 1843.
I have some doubtful information about her birth family, i.e. possibly a Spanish mother or ancestry
on the mother's side, or she may have been born in Spain. Her father was a British military officer.
Further census records would be useful.
Her prowess as a psychic is well recorded with solving of murders and mysteries and many other exploits.
I have also been asked to portray this lady in June at the opening of Shirley Gibson-Langille's art show
in Lansdowne, so I want to be sure that I have the details correct for that also.
If any of you can help me with this fascinating quest, either by information, or leads on how to proceed,
I would be very grateful.
Thank you very much.
