Local gay couple ties the knot

London has seen its first same-sex wedding, days after the Ontario
Court of Appeal gave the legal go-ahead. Jim and Robert
CLAYTON-
ARMSTRONG
were married Saturday in a simple civil ceremony at Gibbons Park.
It was a bit of a re-run for the couple, who have been together
for 11 years. Last June they had a wedding ceremony with more
than 130 guests, followed by a reception at the Marconi Club.
But this time, they had the all-important piece of paper -- a
marriage licence.
Jim said they were "ecstatic" when they heard about last Tuesday's
court ruling that legalized same-sex marriages. They immediately
starting making calls to arrange the licence.
"We felt we were married last year and will always date our anniversary
from that. This is just a legal thing, but it's important," said
Jim, who works at a London hospital.
Robert said they also were concerned the ruling could be appealed
and overturned.
"We wanted to do it before they said 'No.' When you love each
other, you want to get married," the retired tobacco plant worker
said.
The couple were wed by Lori
SISKA, who is licensed to officiate
civil marriages. She said city hall has issued licences to at
least two other same-sex couples, but she believes the Clayton-Armstrongs
are the first to go ahead with their wedding.
The couple said their relationship has been accepted by their
families and Friends and they have run into relatively little
hostility in the wider community.
Leigh UNDERWOOD, a friend who was at their wedding, joked the
couple no longer had to live "in sin."
"They've made honest men of each other,"
SISKA said.
