Couple's 40th anniversary a boon for Christmas Fund
Murray and Marg
BYERS asked for something for others when they
marked a milestone together
By Denis LANGLOIS,
Thursday,
November 09, 2006
Donations begin coming in early for The Sun Times-CFOS Christmas
Fund broadcast.
The on-air fundraising drive, which raises thousands of dollars
annually for a variety of local organizations and charities,
is still about a month away. But some folks are wasting no time
in donating to the cause.
Murray and Marg
BYERS, who live near Tara, decided to ask for
donations to the broadcast in lieu of gifts for their 40th wedding
anniversary dance, held October 21 at the Arran-Tara Community
Centre. "We didn't need anymore gifts," Marg
BYERS said in a
recent interview.
Instead, they wanted people to donate to a charity and after
some brainstorming, they settled on the Christmas Fund.
The couple has donated to the fundraiser a few times over the
years and
BYERS said she's listened to it since she was little.
The couple also wanted people to support a local cause.
Initially, $700 was donated by people who attended the dance.
But more has trickled in,
BYERS said. She said Bayshore Broadcasting
general manager Ross
KENTNER told her roughly $1,000 has been
received so far.
"We had no idea it was going to be that much."
There's word that others have decided to ask for donations to
the fund in lieu of gifts.
Each year, people sing, play music and entertain at the Roxy
Theatre in Owen Sound as part of the seven-hour broadcast. The
holiday tradition will mark its 67th year when it hits the airwaves
December 3. Last year, just over $20,000 was raised for a long
list of charities.
The first $10,000 raised this year will be donated to Participation
Lodge, with the next $2,000 going towards the Special Olympics.
The remaining funds will be divided among 18 other organizations
including Brucelea Haven, the Children's Aid Society, Salvation
Army, firefighter toy drives, the Women's Centre Grey-Bruce,
Beaver Valley Outreach and Saint_John Ambulance.
Admission to watch the broadcast at the Roxy Theatre is, as it
long has been, 25 cents and a non-perishable food item for the
Salvation Army food bank.
