Loving life at 99
WEIDER matriarch celebrates milestone
By Sharon WEATHERALL,
Thursday,
October 13, 2005
The woman who helped to establish and build Blue Mountain Resort
turned 99 on last Thursday.
Helena (Helen)
WEIDER, celebrated this milestone birthday among
family members during Thanksgiving dinner on Saturday in her
son George
WEIDER's residence.
It was 64 years ago that Jozo, with Helen's support, founded
the Blue Mountain Resort.
Looking back, it is with mixed feelings of great happiness, melancholy
and some sadness that she reflects upon her long but very adventurous
life. The years in Collingwood were among her happiest as a young
wife and mother supporting her husband's dream to chisel a ski
business from the rugged, but beautiful landscape.
That same dream created an exciting new chapter in local history
-- one which has ultimately led to world-wide recognition for
the area.
Born in Czechoslovakia in 1906, as a young woman Helen lived
and worked in Prague. She loved the outdoors and took frequent
ski trips to the mountains of Slovakia.
On one of those she met Josef (later nicknamed Jozo)
WEIDER,
then an adventurous young entrepreneur who had built a ski lodge
in the Carpathian range. In Helena's eyes he was both brilliant
and bubbling with energy and as the years passed she found those
two qualities would only intensify.
“He was especially smart at absolutely everything he did -- he
taught skiing, he could speak several languages and even cook,&rdquo
she recalled. “When Jozo proposed to me we were skiing high on
the mountains in Czechoslovakia. I wanted to ski as fast as he
was and I fell down.
“He saw me there and came back to help me up and then he proposed,&rdquo
said Helen, assuring she answered the proposal with a proposition
of her own.
“I told him that before I married him he had to shave off his
moustache and he did -- auuugh, I don't like moustaches.&rdquo
The couple married in 1934, and the two of them operated their
lodge and hosted skiers, hikers and mountain climbers.
It was hard work but the couple was happy. The lodge could only
be reached on foot, and Jozo had left a pile of bricks at the
bottom of the mountain, with a sign urging that each guest should
put a brick or two in his or her rucksack.
The WEIDER's idyllic life in the mountains was interrupted by
overtones of war as the Nazis began to exert power in Czechoslovakia,
which they later invaded. In 1938 Jozo and Helen immigrated to
Canada with their baby son George and took up homesteading in
the backwoods of the Peace River district near the Yukon border.
Jozo quickly tired of this isolated existence and convinced the
Canadian Pacific Railway Company to hire him as a ski instructor
in the Canadian Pacific Railway's Chateau Frontenac in Quebec.
He spent one winter in Quebec and then was joined by Helen, who
by now had two children (a daughter had been born in the Peace
River district).
At Ste. Marguerite in Quebec Jozo met a wealthy lawyer and businessman
Peter CAMPBELL, who encouraged him to come to Blue Mountain.
With CAMPBELL's backing, he founded Blue Mountain Resorts Ltd.
Jozo applied his entrepreneurial and creative skills with great
success, and over the next 30 years he expanded Blue Mountain
and made it into Ontario's leading ski resort, with substantial
year-round operations, as well. Helen remembers those early years
well.
“It mostly bush and farmer's fields when we first came here and
had to be cleared -- it wasn't easy, it took a lot of hard work.
In the Collingwood the mountains were very good for skiing,&rdquo
said Helena who worked in the first ski shop which was built
in a former sheep barn.
“I knitted headbands for the skiers and sold them for $1.50 each.
They would tell me what they wanted and then come back to pick
them up the next day.&rdquo
According to her son George, some initial ski trails initially
cut by the Collingwood and Toronto Ski clubs were further development
and expanded by Jozo.
Growing up on the mountain, Helen says all of her children were
excellent skiers and won many competitions. All of her three
daughters (twin girls Anna and Katherine were born in Collingwood)
became Canadian ski champions. Katherine's husband Gordon is
now president of Blue Mountain Resort.
Helen supported Jozo's throughout his career, and not only assisted
him in the operation and management Blue Mountain's ski shops,
as well as the retail operations of Blue Mountain Pottery, another
successful business that Jozo founded.
An outdoor enthusiast Helen remained an avid skier until the
1960s but stopped after Jozo's tragic death in an automobile
accident in 1971. Afterwards it became to emotionally painful
for her to continue skiing; the mountain reminded her too much
of the tragedy. Helena found solace by taking up residence for
15 years on the south coast of Spain. This was a very creative
period in her life. Although 65 years old, she learned Spanish
and became fluent in that language, and while there, she renovated
and sold two houses, and managed to write two books: Mountain
Ballad and Tales of Andalucia. The books contained memoirs of
her mountain life and stories from the local population. In the
mid-1990s she was approached by an American film about making
a movie based on Tales of Andalucia, but unfortunately it never
transpired.
“She flowered on her own. She was very fluent in the language
and lived amongst the local people quite naturally, coming to
know them very well,” said George
WEIDER.
“Mother was very proud of the fact that her book was almost made
into the movie. She loved the mountains and loved living in them
in her whole life.&rdquo
WEIDER said his mother also loved bulls and found then quite
fascinating. Helen chose to have the image of a Spanish bull
on the front cover of her book Tales of Andalucia.
Helen returned to Blue Mountain in 1986 and lived until recently
in a home that her family built for her. George said his mother
wanted to have a Spanish bull brought here to wander on the Blue
Mountain and was quite put out when it didn't happen.
Before taking up residence in a local retirement home in 2004
she would walk to the new Intrawest Village at Blue Mountain
carrying a rucksack on her back which she filled with groceries
that she would take home to prepare her own meals. At 99 she
is still able to walk on her own with the assistance of a walker
when she tires.
This hardy woman has endured immigration and the hardships of
building a resort business, and has seen her home country succumb
first to Nazi and later Communist domination: and after liberation
from totalitarian regimes, division into two nations: Czech and
Slovak. In spite of these trials she continues to be in reasonably
good health and to continue her independent ways. Helena
WEIDER
enjoys eight grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
Jozo and Helen's creation, the Blue Mountain Resort continued
to be owned by the
WEIDER family and has been managed with great
success by her son-in-law Gordon
CANNING, who has been Chief
Executive
Officer since 1978. George
WEIDER,
Jozo and Helen's
son is Chairman of the Board. In 1999 the family entered a partnership
with the Intrawest Corporation, which purchased a 50 per cent
interest in Blue Mountain Resorts Ltd. and developed the Village
at Blue, Ontario's first destination resort village.

Happy 90th Birthday Howard
A long lineup of well-wishers formed at Station on the Green
two weeks ago to celebrate Howard
NOBLE's 90th birthday (Howard
is seen here with his son Wayne and Wayne's wife Hilda). As part
of the festivities, local musicians Fran and Anna Lee
WEBSTER
performed a special song for the birthday boy. Here are the lyrics:
A noble sort of gentleman
Will celebrate today
With all his Friends and family
His 90th birthday.
A noble man of noble deeds
Benevolent and true
He's a father and grandfather
Man of morals through and through.
He's a farmer, he's a welder
He's a mason, he's a brother,
Yes, he's Irish, and he's charming
(Must have gotten that from his mother…)
Howard NOBLE -- It's your birthday
And our thoughts are all on you
Happy
Birthday
Howard
NOBLE&hellip
(and to Pete and Maggie too!)
Howard's brother, Pete, and Howard's great-granddaughter Maggie
were also celebrating their birthdays that day.
