'I just can't wait to take them home'

When the newborn cries of Maia Cristina VAGUEIRO rang through a London hospital delivery room last week, parents Paul and Cristina broke into tears of joy.
"But then I pulled it together," Paul said. "I had work to do."
Video camera in hand, Paul watched in awe as that first proclamation of "It's a girl," was followed within a minute by another "It's a girl," then "It's a boy," and finally, "It's a girl."
The VAGUEIROs' miracle quadruplets were letting out a chorus of wails, assuring their apprehensive parents they had arrived and that each had a healthy set of lungs.
And the news just keeps getting better.
Though the babies were born Friday by caesarean section, about six weeks before their due date, they spent only four days in St.…Joseph's Health Care's neo-natal intensive care unit before being moved to a "progressive" ward.
The move is a sign they are doing remarkably well, said Renato NATALE, associate chief of obstetrics for London hospitals, who oversaw a team handling the quadruplets.
Most quads do well to stay 29 weeks in the womb, NATALE said. For Cristina to make it to 34 weeks and two days was "excellent," he said.
"I feel overjoyed," Cristina said yesterday from her hospital bed as a doting Paul handed the infants back to nurses after a brief photo shoot.
"They're perfect and I don't think words can express how I feel about them. I just can't wait to take them home and start our family."
They are, in order of birth:
- Maia Cristina, born May 5 at 10: 19 a.m., weighing four pounds.
- Hailey Nicole, Maia's identical twin, born 10: 20 a.m., weighing three pounds, 13 ounces.
- Cole Alexander, born 10: 21 a.m., at three pounds, 12 ounces.
- Sarah Vanessa, Cole's fraternal twin, born 10: 22 a.m., at four pounds, one ounce.
Cristina, drugged but conscious for the births, said the wails from firstborn Maia ended months of anxiety for her and Paul, who were shocked 10 weeks into the pregnancy to learn they were having quadruplets.
The odds of conceiving quadruplets without the aid of fertility drugs are one in 750,000, based on live births worldwide.
"As soon as they held her up and I heard her crying, I felt like, 'It's okay, it's okay,' " Cristina said.
The couple had been warned more than 90 per cent of quadruplets are born prematurely, have a low birth weight and are at five times greater risk of birth defects and disabilities.
"I realize how lucky we are," Cristina said of the healthy infants.
They'll likely remain in hospital another three weeks to ensure they're feeding well and don't become jaundiced.
"It's like we prepared for the worst and hoped for the best and we're so blessed that they're doing so well," she said.
Paul said emerging from the delivery room immediately after the births -- caught on video -- was quite the sight.
"It was like a Boxing Day sale," the beaming new dad recalls. "There were all these people, my family, Cristina's family, nursing staff -- all cheering and giving me high-fives. Even the custodian gave me a hug."
Cristina had spent eight weeks in hospital awaiting the births. Though she's been aching to get home, she dreads the idea of being discharged without her children. She'll likely be discharged in days.
While she recovers from surgery, Paul has been on regular bottle-feeding detail, using Cristina's pumped breast milk. Cristina has also begun breastfeeding, which she describes as her first chance to bond and cuddle the babies.
"Yesterday was the first time I actually felt like I was a mom because I was able to breastfeed and give them a sponge bath," she said.
Cristina, 26, and Paul, 30, said they're grateful for the offers of help, including a corporate donation of children's clothing, since news of the young couple's instant family began spreading two weeks ago.
But they're also well aware of the challenges before them.
Paul, a pharmaceutical sales rep for Novartis, who works from home, had the basement of the family's home hurriedly refinished to house his office to make room for a main-floor nursery. A new van was purchased.
But diapers, change tables, formula, strollers, diaper pails, receiving blankets -- the list is endless.
"We're going to take it one day at a time," Cristina said. "If we look ahead to them being toddlers, the terrible twos, that's overwhelming."

Grandparents, Ron and Mary VAN HORNE of London, and Kester and Debby LAKE of Dorchester, and Great-Grandparents Mina ADAM/ADAMS and Virginia and Joe DOYLE, are first in line for hugs and kisses, followed closely by many aunts, uncles and cousins. Many thanks to everyone for their prayers, visits, phone calls, and gifts during Kristen's 5 week stay in Antenatal. Endless gratitude to our families and Friends for their incredible and ongoing support and assistance throughout this experience. Thanks also to the River Heights staff, and the Dorchester community for the interest in and care for our family. We would also like to thank Doctor FEYLES and the Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility team at London Health Sciences Centre -- University Hospital Dr. CRUMLEY and associates, and the outstanding Saint_Joseph's Health Care Antenatal nursing staff. Gabriel had been born four months earlier on November 25 to Markham couple Gordon DAVIS, 44, a graphic designer, and Desirée VAN BUUREN, 35, a project manager for a business consultancy.
"We wanted to instill in Gabriel a love of nature and respect for the Earth," his mother says.
They don't plan to raise him under an organized religion, though both sets of grandparents are traditional churchgoers. But "he can make a decision on a religion if he chooses to do so at a later age," she says.

Being born big may have saved the life of Nicolas Joaquim Rodrigues ISABEL, who was born with a rare heart condition.
Nicolas was rushed into surgery when he was less than a day old, and his 9¾ pounds gave doctors lots to work with. "You can imagine open-heart surgery on a smaller baby," says his father, Nelson.
The infant seemed perfectly normal at his birth on August 20. But he refused food and within hours he was showing symptoms of distress.
Nicolas was diagnosed with total anomalous pulmonary venous drainage, a rare condition in which blood doesn't flow properly into the heart, and was taken to the Hospital for Sick Children. When his parents saw him after surgery, his tiny body was riddled with tubes and instruments. "It was like a really bad dream," his mother, Marguerett ISABEL, says.
But the couple, both 31, say Nicolas recovered fast from then on. They praise the Sick Kids medical team led by Dr. Glen VAN ARSDELL.
The ISABELs had been trying for years to have a baby, but Ms. ISABEL says they're in no hurry to have another child: "We want to spoil this one before we have any more."
