Pico's parents were firm in the choice of his name, fending off the criticism of relatives who insisted he would be the butt of jokes in school.
The announcement came after a long and difficult delivery at Women's College Hospital. The mother, Carla TONELLI, a journalist, had hoped for an all-natural birth, but after her labour persisted, she was induced on September 15 -- 57 hours after her water had broken.
The name was kept secret until the birth, father Gregor MADDEN explains, so they could unveil the baby and his moniker like "a piece of art." After an initial storm of protest ("My mom called him 'Orange Pekoe,' Ms. TONELLI says,) relatives came around, grudgingly.
Keen travellers, Ms. TONELLI and Mr. MADDEN named their first child after travel writer Pico Iyer. They like that the name is not associated with one particular culture. Mr. MADDEN, a network administrator, says there's also a technical meaning that appeals to him. "Pico" means one-trillionth, so the name marks his son as one of a kind.

Soon after learning she was pregnant, Lisa COLLVER wasn't feeling well and she feared she had lost the child.
At hospital, an ultrasound quickly found her heartbeat -- and two others.
"I almost fell off the stretcher," COLLVER said.
"I was shocked."
This month, she and husband, Don, became parents of identical twin boys, Dylan Franklin and Griffin Fredrick COLLVER.
Statistically, twins are common enough.
But in this family, Dylan and Griffin are much more noteworthy: They are the fourth pair of twins in three generations.
Lisa's fraternal twin, Kim KLAUS, arrived 20 minutes after she was born.
Fraternal twins result when two eggs are fertilized by two different sperm, while identical twins develop when a fertilized egg splits.
Lisa's aunt, Sheila WHITTAKER, is also a twin, though her fraternal sibling, Jean TOOTELL, died at birth.
Frank COLLVER, Lisa's father-in-law, is a twin too.
His identical twin brother, Fred, passed away a few years ago.
The newborns were named after the men, she said.
The young family also has a two-year-old boy, Mason.
"My three sons, that's what I keep calling them."
Griffin was born at four pounds, eight ounces.
Dylan, who weighed three pounds and twelve ounces at birth, is already busy greeting others.
"He's waving to everybody," Lisa said.
