Colleagues host birthday party for 100-year-old teacher
By Paul AUSTIN, Sun Times Correspondent, Page A3
Kincardine celebrated a special birthday Easter weekend.
Former W.E. Thompson Public School kindergarten teacher Jessie ROBINSON turns 100 years old on April 27. Saturday, her colleagues held a birthday party at the Kincardine Curling Club.
More than 100 former students, fellow teachers and their family members turned out for the event.
A smiling ROBINSON was piped into the facility by Kincardine's Scottish and Penetangore Competition band member Julie FAIR.
Taking her seat in a sunny corner of the hall, ROBINSON shared memories with dozens of well-wishers who stopped by to talk about the old days or reintroduce themselves after, in some cases, 40 years or more of absence.
ROBINSON retired from teaching in 1971 after running the kindergarten classes at W.E. Thompson since 1956. She began her teaching career in 1925 at the Lorne Beach school known as S.S.#8.
ROBINSON estimated she saw some 600 students pass through her kindergarten doors at Thompson school, noting "things got a lot busier when the (Douglas Point) plant took off."
ROBINSON lived in her own home and drove her own car until she was 95, then moved to Malcolm Place in Kincardine after her doctor suggested stairs were no longer a good idea.
The former teacher said the biggest change she has seen in the lives of young people and their educations has been the advent of the personal computer and the internet.
ROBINSON said she never learned to surf the web or send e-mails but added her family "does all that" and said she has been amazed at the research and communication power now afforded youngsters.
At ROBINSON's request, many guests donated to the Children's Wish Foundation in lieu of presents, but some couldn't resist at least a small gift.
Kincardine's THRENDYLE family brought a yellow brick from the W.E. Thompson School, where the north wing has now been demolished to make way for the AMEC NCL Training Centre. Four THRENDYLE brothers are former ROBINSON kindergartners.
Sisters Heather JOLLEY and Lynda THACHER brought their former teacher the one gift so traditional as to be nearly mandatory on such a commemorative occasion: a bright red apple.

THAMES, Cienna Jade -- Hatch:
By Oliver MOORE, Saturday, May 7, 2005, Page M4
Though home delivery is increasingly common, it was hardly a matter of choice for Kevin THAMES and Heidi FULCHER.
Mr. THAMES, 46, says his wife woke up early on April 12 with slight labour pains.
While preparing to go to the hospital, the pain got so bad that Ms. FULCHER, a 41-year-old employee at York University, had to lean against the wall.
"Two minutes later, she said: 'Call 911,' recalls Mr. THAMES, a long-time letter carrier.
The 911 operator told him to get her on the floor, and once she was lying down, he could see how quickly things had progressed.
"As soon as the water broke, the baby just dropped down instantly, like a suction cup grabbed her," he says. "I saw a lot of baby head, a lot of baby hair."
Bordering on panic but churning with adrenaline, he followed the dispatcher's instructions to open the door for the paramedics and fetch a shoestring to tie off the umbilical cord, if necessary.
Luckily, the couple's Annex home is only a few doors from an ambulance station and the house was quickly crawling with emergency workers.
Within a few minutes, Cienna Jade THAMES was born in the family's bathroom, weighing 7 pounds, 7 ounces.
"Our first child wasn't like that. The second one is usually very quick, but they never said anything about being automatically-instantly," Mr. THAMES says.
"It's a good thing we didn't leave to go the hospital 'cause we would have been on the [street] or something."

New Year's baby surprises parents
By Thulasi SRIKANTHAN, Staff Reporter
He was barely six hours old, but yesterday the bouncing baby boy was already the centre of media attention.
The as-yet-unnamed baby, born after putting Mom through two days of labour, arrived seconds after midnight on New Year's Day to become Toronto's first baby of 2007, weighing in at 7 pounds and 13 ounces.
"I was nervous and scared," said the infant's 32-year-old father, Patrick THANARATNAM, shortly after his first child arrived -- at about 40 seconds into the new year -- at Scarborough Grace Hospital.
It was his first time holding a newborn, THANARATNAM admitted. "My hands were shaking."
Seconds after the Toronto baby made his debut, another boy was born at Mississauga's Credit Valley Hospital -- officially at 12: 01 a.m. -- to become the 905 region's first arrival of 2007.
Komal and Surinder PURI, who had been awaiting the arrival of their baby for a day, were quick to dub him with the nickname "Krish," after the traditional Hindu name Krishna.
Krish is their third child and second son.
"We are excited and pleasantly surprised about the timing," said proud father Surinder, who admitted to watching television as the baby arrived.
"As soon as they rang in the new year, the baby was born," he said, adding he was watching revellers in New York's Times Square celebrate as his wife was giving birth.
It's not just moms and babies who have it rough.
THANARATNAM, who said he had never picked up newborn babies because he was afraid of dropping them, will also have to pay $100 to his sister, who bet on the infant's New Year's Day arrival.
For his wife, Mary Julian BENADICT, the anxiety all came from giving birth for the first time. "But when I see his face now, I am very happy," she said in Tamil.
When it comes to the baby's future, his mom said, "We are going to educate him well, so he can become a doctor."
The couple, originally from Sri Lanka, was married more than two years ago.
While THANARATNAM has lived in Toronto for about 15 years, his wife moved to Canada in the fall of 2005.
In Mississauga, Krish's mom, Komal, said the delivery of her third child wasn't as easy as the first two, adding she is still in some pain.
"Delivering a baby is not easy," she said, adding she went into labour at 5: 45 p.m. the night before.
Commenting on the days ahead, she said, "It's a boy, so I don't know how much trouble it's going to cause me."
The couple plans a big celebration in about six weeks, and will go to a temple for blessings.
As for Toronto's first baby, his name will in part be decided by one of the baby's uncles and his baptism will take place in another month.
And as for the baby becoming a doctor, the father says, "Her wish is my wish."

Miracle baby gives men pregnant pause
Infant who grew outside uterus boosts theory that males can give birth
By Omar EL AKKAD, With reports from Elizabeth SSAINTILIP and Avis FAVARO of CTV News, Tuesday, September 27, 2005, Page A17
Until Lia THARBY finally gave birth, doctors did not know what was going on inside her body. If they had, they would have advised terminating her pregnancy.
But test after test failed to show that the fetus was growing outside her uterus, a condition so rare only four similar births have been documented worldwide. The situation is extremely risky, endangering the lives of both mother and baby because of the great potential for complications.
On April 30, Ms. THARBY gave birth to her daughter, Emylea, at 33 weeks. It was only during the vertical caesarean section that doctors discovered the umbilical cord was attached to the outside of the uterus. Emylea had grown in her mother's abdominal cavity, her skull flattened slightly from butting Ms. THARBY's liver.
The baby's survival, while being described as miraculous, also lends credibility to a theory almost universally relegated to the realm of science fiction: that any human, woman or man, can give birth.
Researchers theorize that a fetus can grow in the abdominal cavity if the placenta manages to latch on to an organ capable of sustaining it. The risk of failure is great, but the process is possible.
"This is nature's experimentation," said Victor HAN, chair of the division of neonatal-perinatal medicine at St. Joseph's Health Care in London, Ontario, where Ms. THARBY, 28, gave birth.
If the appropriate conditions are created and the right hormones produced, any person can conceive, he said. But, he added, if the placenta latched on to an organ such as the liver, the organ could malfunction or a major hemorrhage could occur. The uterus is a far better candidate because its purpose is reproduction, he said.
Emylea has a dislocated hip and two club feet, but bears no other signs of her unconventional route from conception to birth. The outcome has stunned and delighted not just her parents, Ms. THARBY and Todd MILLER, but also doctors at St. Joseph's.
"You can say that Emylea eluded physicians from being diagnosed properly as being outside the uterus," Dr. HAN said. "If the diagnosis had happened early on, Emylea would not have made it through," he added, noting the pregnancy likely would have been terminated because of the risk to the mother.
He hailed the event as important for researchers because of the light it could shed on this rare type of pregnancy, known as extrauterine.
It was not a physically pleasant experience for Ms. THARBY, who had been warned her first pregnancy could be uncomfortable but had no idea what was in store.
"It felt like razors cutting me up from inside every time she moved," she said of the severe abdominal pain she suffered. The pain got worse as Emylea grew. It was only after Ms. THARBY gave birth that doctors realized the baby had been slowly putting more pressure on her mother's liver.
Three ultrasounds had shown no sign of the extrauterine pregnancy.
Unlike most ectopic, or "out of place," pregnancies, in which a fertilized egg becomes implanted outside the uterus in a Fallopian tube, an extrauterine pregnancy can develop without the fetus bursting the organ that contains it. However, the condition is so rare that doctors did not consider the possibility Ms. THARBY had it.
In hindsight, she is thrilled the problem was not discovered, which likely would have meant ending the pregnancy.
"I felt extremely lucky that they didn't know what was wrong."
Emylea, who arrived weighing four pounds, 13 ounces, dislocated both hips at birth. One hip popped back into place, but she will need surgery to repair the other. Her parents are also massaging her feet daily to try to align her heels. Ms. THARBY said Emylea does not appear to feel pain from her physical problems, and she is confident the baby will be completely normal.
Ms. THARBY, however, can no longer bear children because doctors had to remove some of her reproductive organs.
The story of Emylea, she said, has overwhelmed her at times.
"I find that I believe in miracles a lot more now than I did before. I remember I was praying to God every night, because I was scared I was going to lose her. But he answered my prayers, because she's here with me today."

FOWELL, Alyssa Jennifer Margaret -- Hatch
By Oliver MOORE, Saturday, October 29, 2005, Page M6
When he heard his wife was pregnant again, Don FOWELL snapped out of his half-sleep and sent an urgent e-mail message.
"He has a Blackberry, which is always next to his bed," said his wife, Olga THIAKOS. " The first thing he does is e-mail the car dealership where we'd just leased a car, to order the seven-seater instead of the five-seater."
Unable to face a blandly sensible vehicle -- "We're downtowners and minivans are for the 'burbs," said Ms. THIAKOS -- they opted for a Volvo sport utility vehicle. Friends and family come second to logistics, apparently, in a family with a trio of children under the age of 2. The couple had planned to have only their twins, Julia and John, and news of Alyssa Jennifer Margaret came out of the blue.
Ms. THIAKOS, a 37-year-old business consultant, remembers being baffled by the unusual emotions and sicknesses she was struggling with, but for a few months it didn't occur to her she might be pregnant.
Mr. FOWELL, a 35-year-old financial planner, says he didn't take the symptoms seriously at first. "I said, 'You probably have a cold.' She said, 'No, I'm pregnant.' "
Alyssa was born October 11 at Mount Sinai Hospital and is now home, growing fast and being safeguarded from the rambunctious love showered on her by Julia and John.
