STADTEGGER,

January 8, 2005 - Page M6
With their first child on the way, Catherine Dunn
STADTEGGER
and her husband, Glenn, scurried to complete kitchen renovations
in their Riverside Drive home before the mid-December due date.
With considerable difficulty, granite countertops were installed,
and around the same time "Andrew" and "Lauren" made it on to
the list of preferred baby names.
In early November, Mrs.
STADTEGGER, a consultant with an international
dental-supply company, attended a conference in Arizona with
her mother. They were on a side trip when a truck with Andrew-Lauren
Granite emblazoned on it loomed in front of them and sealed the
moniker for the child. "It was a sign," says Mrs.
STADTEGGER,
normally an apostle of logic.
Back in Toronto on November 25, an unexpected complication led
to an emergency cesarean delivery three weeks early. At 8: 33
p.m., Mr. STADTEGGER, a lawyer, witnessed the birth, cutting
the umbilical cord when 5-pound, 8-ounce Lauren made her debut.
"Caught off guard, we now have her crib and nursery set up and
are really starting to enjoy her," Mrs.
STADTEGGER says.

HARDING,

May 14, 2005, Page M6
Connie VITELLO and Jason
HARDING had practised natural birthing
techniques and read supportive literature, including Naomi Wolf's
Misconceptions.
Confident that deep breathing, visualization and the pain-easing
waters of Toronto East General Hospital's whirlpool would facilitate
their blessed event, a three-day birthing adventure was not what
they envisioned.
"I had an idealistic image of how it was going to go," says Ms.
VITELLO, a 31-year-old magazine editor. But after two excruciating
days of labour, she thought to herself: "I guess my body wasn't
as Mother Earth as I thought, and I was more than happy to have
an epidural and succumb to modern medication."
Mr. HARDING, a 34-year-old television editor and owner of Axon
Pictures, fainted during the final moments of the ordeal, but
recovered in time to see his son, six-pound, eight-ounce Fionn
Joseph Jason
HARDING, emerge from a four-hour pushing marathon
on March 2 with only a broken clavicle. Fionn's trauma behind
them, the Leslieville couple wouldn't edit a frame. "He's the
most perfect thing we've ever done," Mr.
HARDING says.

Maya Jade RAFF, who accompanied her virtuoso mother to a plethora
of concert appearances in utero, made her own eight-pound, one-ounce
debut for her Rosedale parents on June 11.
As soon as baby Maya can hold a violin she'll be taught by her
mother, Sarah Fraser
RAFF, 32, who is on the faculty of the Royal
Conservatory of Music and is a founding member of the Madawaska
String Quartet. "She certainly seems to have inherited her parents'
long fingers, and that does help," says Mrs. Fraser
RAFF who
has worked with Rod Stewart, Diana Krall and others. Maya's namesake,
her aunt and concert violinist Maya
FRASER, began violin at the
tender age of 3, inspired by older sister Sarah, who began playing
at 5.
She will be competing for Maya's attention with her husband,
Paul RAFF, 37, an award-winning architect. He teaches at the
universities of Toronto and Waterloo, and contributes architecture
articles to publications such as Wallpaper and Canadian House
and Home. Mr.
RAFF says he can't wait until Maya can hold a pencil
so he can teach her to draw. "We're going to start finger painting
as soon as possible. It will be a mess, but fun!" he beams.

GLOVER,
Aletheia
Katerina -- Hatch
By Judith TENENBAUM,
Saturday,▲▼
November▼ 12, 2005, Page M4
An associate editor at Knopf Canada, Angelika
GLOVER, 36, discovered
her pregnancy while working on Ami McKay's first novel, The Birth
House, which discusses midwifery in Nova Scotia during the First
World War. That experience inspired her to plan for natural childbirth
at home.
But her plans went askew. "The contractions came so quickly and
fiercely," says father Dan
GLOVER, 33, a clerk at the Ontario
Court of Appeal. The midwives they had planned to use were too
busy to make it to Ms.
GLOVER in time. Thus, it was a midwife
student who caught baby Aletheia, to be called Thea, as she opened
her smoky blue eyes on October 29 at 8: 48 a.m.
The name Aletheia is loosely derived from Lethe, a river in Greek
myth that infuses complete forgetfulness. Adding the "A" reverses
the meaning to "unforgettable." The name Katerina honours Ms.
GLOVER's great-grandmother who, during the First World War, carried
her daughter across Albanian mountains to safety. Thea seems
to have inherited some of her feistiness: During her mother's
ultrasounds, she persistently kept her legs crossed, Mr.
GLOVER
says with a laugh. "We never knew what sex the baby was until
she came out."

MacKAY,

Gregory -- Hatch:
By Judith TENENBAUM,

November▲ 26, 2005, Page M5
Don't ever jest with Melanie
PUGLIESE about that shop-till-you-drop
experience. When her water broke October 19, she delayed going
to hospital until contractions became severe. Seven hours later,
she was no closer to delivery, and a nurse advised her to walk
around the mall. As she hobbled through Fairview Mall, she recalls,
"People were looking at me, huge and sweaty, and by 4 p.m. I
was in pain on all fours in the underwear department of the Bay."
Back at the hospital, a whirlpool and then an epidural gave some
relief. Finally, after a 27-hour ordeal, at 9: 30 a.m. on October
20, Carston Gregory
MacKAY made his debut at 7 pounds, 12 ounces.
Ms. PUGLIESE, 35, an English teacher, had contemplated the name
Carson -- as in "son of a car buff," in honour of her husband,
contractor Alex
MacKAY.
But
Mr.
MacKAY, 32, heard a radio announcer
mention Karsten Andersen, a Norwegian conductor, and when they
were shopping one day he spelled out "Carston" in big wooden
kids' letters. Its distinctiveness settled the issue. Gregory
was chosen because Scottish middle names beginning with "G" signify
good luck, which the couple are hoping for in any future birthing
experience.

Win -- Hatch:
By Judith TENENBAUM,

December▼ 10, 2005, Page M6
'Murphy's Law was ruling the day November 25," Win
SAKDINAN says.
That was when his wife Stefanie's contractions coincided with
the season's first serious snowfall. "We couldn't leave until
my parents arrived to take care of our three-year-old, Ben, and
as they frantically made their way through the snow, I could
see from my window 16th Avenue, which leads to the 404, jammed
solid."
During a 45-minute rush-hour odyssey to North York General Hospital,
her contractions intensified. "I thought if I took my seatbelt
off and rammed my back into the handle of the door for some counter-pressure,
it would help, and maybe a policeman would see me not wearing
my belt and get me to the hospital for my epidural," Mrs.
SAKDINAN
recalls.
Meanwhile, her husband mulled "putting the hazard lights on and
riding the shoulder, but there was too much snow."
The couple, both 34, took prenatal classes based on a pain-placated
delivery, but when they got to the hospital, she was fully dilated.
"I had to do it with no drugs -- just suck it up and do it. I
never thought I'd have the strength," she admits.
Twenty minutes later, Jacob Win
SAKDINAN arrived au naturel at
6 pounds, 13 ounces.
The family's next adventure will be three years in Geneva, where
Mr. SAKDINAN will be part of a new product innovation team with
Procter and Gamble.

While on business in Australia, Las Vegas, Brussels and Rome,
Zayna KHAYAT only suspected she was carrying an extra passenger.
But the Boston Consulting Group project leader didn't confirm
her suspicions until she connected with her husband, Sheldon
BELL, in Singapore, where he was completing his final semester
of an M.B.A. student exchange program.
"I met him at the Singapore airport and we did a pregnancy test
in a McDonald's bathroom," she laughs.
The news didn't slow them down much.
"We spent our last month overseas in New Zealand, China, Hong
Kong and Vietnam, but morning sickness caused us to return home,
and skip the World Expo in Japan," says Mr.
BELL, 31, now a project
manager with TD Wealth Management.
On November 4, all 8 pounds and 4 ounces of Samien John Khayat
BELL arrived at Women's College Hospital in fine order. "The
labour and delivery went so smoothly, my last two weeks of pregnancy
were more difficult than giving birth," laughs Ms.
KHAYAT, 31.
John is a standard moniker on the Bell family tree, and baby
Samien vociferously endorses his Lebanese name, which means "to
be heard."

When Bret TARVER, now 33 and an associate producer with Report
on Business Television, cast his crumbs upon the Internet seeking
Ultimate Frisbee players for his team, he lucked out with a response
from Aleksandra
LATAWIEC.
The operations director at Bell Canada
became his teammate, soul mate, then wife. "It was love at first
game," laughs his mother, Marilyn
MAZUREK.
On November 28, however, the couple's ultimate thrill came at
Mount Sinai Hospital with the arrival of eight-pound, 11-ounce
Paris
Lydia
Filomena
TARVER, whose middle names derive from her
great-grandmothers, and first name celebrates the rhapsodic moment
when her parents said their vows on a bridge by the Eiffel Tower.
"Ultimate Frisbee is a hard-core game, not for 40-year-olds,
and we will be over the hill for it shortly," says Mrs.
TARVER,
35, a marathoner and scuba diver. Fortunately, the baton can
be passed to baby Paris, who has already determinedly clutched
a Frisbee while waiting to take the field.

Susan and Kurtis
SARJEANT now subscribe to the U.S. Coast Guard
motto, Semper Paratus ("always ready").
Both are 34 and accountants, she at the Bank of Montreal, he
at Magna International. "Between my strategy work and his capital
planning," Ms.
SARJEANT says, "the baby really caught us off
guard." An ultrasound two days earlier had indicated that everything
was on schedule, but then, after a spicy Thai meal, "my waters
broke with a gush only seen in movies." The new mother chuckles,
remembering that the baby's room was "not yet complete. The blinds,
shelves and pictures still had to be hung, and the hospital bag
was not packed."
Twelve hours later -- on February 19 -- Amy Julia Farman
SARJEANT
arrived, weighing 6 pounds 14 ounces. Four weeks early, she was
challenged by raspy breathing and a strep B virus. "I kissed
her on the forehead and they took her away," Ms.
SARJEANT recalls.
After eight days in Scarborough Grace's neonatal intensive-care
unit, however, Amy was lovingly ensconced at home. These days,
the family diaper bag "is always packed and ready to go!"

CLARKE,

The first act of Phoibe's life story had Saint_Joseph's Health
Centre as its setting. Four Valkyrie-like midwives swooped about,
assisting Krisztina
SZABO, who had vowed to do battle without
medication.
The Wagnerian six-hour drama unfolded, climaxing with two hours
of "concerted pushing," according to her father, Kristian
CLARKE.
Tiny Titan goddess Phoibe made her entrance February 10, 2006,
at 8 pounds 10 ounces, and 22 inches unfurled -- which was not
surprising, since Dad and her uncles tower around 6-foot-5.
Ms. SZABO, 33, a mezzo-soprano, will be singing in the Easter
presentation of Bach's St. Matthew Passion at the Brooklyn Academy
of Music and is soon to begin rehearsals for the inaugural presentation
of the Ring cycle at the new Four Seasons Centre for the Performing
Arts.
A co-director of
CARFAC, a professional association for visual
and media artists, Mr.
CLARKE, 34, asserts:
"I think to watch and want to help is almost as hard for the
partner as for the person giving birth.

PERLY,

Belle -- Hatch:
By Judith TENENBAUM,

Michelle ZORN's natural-birthing stratagem was usurped at 1 a.m.
on March 6 by the jolt of severe contractions and accompanying
back pains, dictating a post-haste trip to Mount Sinai Hospital
and the relief of an epidural. "I'll never forget my midwife
pushing me, in a wheelchair, toward the elevator. I had a contraction,
started screaming…. No need to tell the security guard what button
to push," she recalls.
Nine hours later, Leora Belle arrived, weighing 7 pounds 11 ounces.
Ms. ZORN, 32, is a national corporate account manager for a worldwide
IT company. Her husband, James, 31, started James Perly Consulting
after the sale of the family business, Perly's Maps.
In ancient Hebrew, Leora means light, symbolizing what this first
child has brought into her parents' lives. Belle pays homage
to paternal great-grandmother Belle
PERLY, a taproot in Perly's
Maps six decades ago. Baby Leora Belle will have the opportunity
to emulate earlier family accomplishments, with two great-grandmothers,
aged 90 and 92, still on hand.

YOUNGE-
ULLMAN, 33, whose third play,
Seven Acts of Intercourse, premiered at Toronto's 2005 Summerworks
Festival, and her actor husband, Michael
WACHOLTZ, 34, their
greatest triumph is 8 pounds.04 ounce Tessa Saville
WACHOLTZ.
With a father who has acted across Canada, notched up two seasons
at Stratford and has a variety of commercial, voice and television
work to his credit, baby Tessa couldn't help but make her debut
punctually on February 9 at Toronto East General Hospital. The
audience included dad, nursing staff, two midwives and grandmother
Cindy ULLMAN, who cut the umbilical cord.
Ms. YOUNGE-
ULLMAN credits hypnotherapy sessions and teaching
Pilates for an easy delivery. "Labour lasted 18 hours, but I
only pushed 20 minutes," she notes. Her recent negotiations include
engaging a New York literary agent for her second novel, Falling
Under, and working out a breastfeeding schedule for Tessa.

In May of 2004, Alexander Aaron arrived promptly on his due date.
Two years later, his sister Michaela Tess was fashionably "10 days
late, but well worth the wait," says mother Laura
CAUCHI, 35,
clinical operations manager for General Medicine. "Second children
are supposed to come early and faster, but Michaela defied convention,"
she says.
After a longer, induced labour but just two contractions, all
9 pounds, 7 ounces of indomitable Michaela appeared on April 24
where déjà vu augured well: Ms.
CAUCHI gave birth in the same
delivery room, same nursing team and same hospital: Women's College.
A coterie of delighted family members included father Jean-Paul
CAUCHI, 34, manager of financial operations at Calyon Financial
Canada, two sets of grandparents for whom Michaela is the first
granddaughter, six great-grandparents and Dougal, the family
Labrador retriever, waiting patiently at their West Annex home.

The Toronto Bond Traders' black-tie dinner at the Four Seasons

RBC
Capital arrived home at 1 a.m. that April 8,
his wife was on the verge of her own new issue. Her water had

"I never snapped out of a late-night haze as fast as I did that
night," he says, laughing as he recalls how he whisked Carol
BAGOZZI, 33, of TD Securities, to Mount Sinai Hospital.
At 4: 21 p.m. that day, 7 pound, 8 ounce Kaitlyn Rose
BYRD arrived
by cesarean section.
The Summerhill neighbourhood couple met while working overseas
in London, returned to Toronto, and married on May 27, 2005,

"As tradition goes, you are supposed to get your wife paper for

RUSSELL,

By Judith TENENBAUM,

After getting married in June, 2005, Oakville residents Nicholle
and John RUSSELL were anxious to start a family. They discovered
she was pregnant in August, and the Chinese gender-calendar predicted
that they could conceive a boy.
Mrs. RUSSELL, a paragon of planning, assembled maternity haute
couture, furnished the nursery, prepared and froze dinners, and
switched on the baby monitor. Readiness yielded to reality on
May 12, at Oakville Trafalgar Hospital, when a boy -- 8-pound
15-ounce Aidan Charles Thomas
RUSSELL -- emerged eight days overdue
but healthy. His transfused mother fared less well, putting a
brief damper on the celebrations. Happily, she's now recovering,
and I (the proud grandmother) am helping with her convalescence.
Mrs. RUSSELL, 34, and Mr.
RUSSELL, 45, whose first date was at
a hockey game, consider Aidan an early fan. Sporting his Maple
Leafs mini-jersey, he gurgles with delight as the trio watch
the playoffs. Baby Aidan will be an only child, as are his mother
and grandfather.

MOGDAN,

April 30, the last day for filing income tax returns, is a banner
day for frazzled accountants who can at last savour a respite.
For Rita MOGDAN, 35, a tax manager at
KPMG, and husband Steve,
41, a tax consultant, that day was particularly euphoric: Seven
pound, 13 ounce Adamo Nunzio
MOGDAN stalled his arrival at Etobicoke
General Hospital until then -- "allowing us to get all of our
clients' tax returns filed," says his mother, laughing.
After the birth of their first child, Elisa
MOGDAN, who is now
4, the couple were disheartened to learn that, as a result of
postpartum complications, a second pregnancy was unlikely. They
contemplated adoption until obstetrician and fertility specialist
Essam MICHAEL diagnosed Mrs.
MOGDAN with Asherman's syndrome,
which he thought he could treat.
"But even after surgery, there was still no guarantee I'd conceive,"
she says. "All children are miracles, but Adamo was our special
gift."

With the precision of a finely tooled product from Magna International,
where her father Andy
MOSCHEE, 35, is a quality-assurance manager,
and her mother Christine, 30, is a human resources co-ordinator,
a perfect 7 pound Avery Rose
MOSCHEE, tumbled into the world
on April 20 at Southlake Regional Health Centre in Newmarket.
Happily, says Mrs.
MOSCHEE, "the pregnancy was uneventful, and
despite being eight days overdue and induced, labour and delivery
were smooth."
"Baby Avery has curly brown hair that everyone said would fall
out but instead has only gotten longer, crazier and higher. We
think she should go out as Don King for Halloween," she adds,
with a laugh.
Easy going, happy to sleep and eat wherever she's carted to,
Avery at less than a month had already visited both her grandparents'
cottages in Muskoka. She loves looking at the water.
"Daddy's girl, she's full of smiles whenever he walks into the
room," says her mother, beaming.

LLOYD,
Michael
Graham -- Hatch:
By Judith TENENBAUM,
Page▲ M4
For Graham
LLOYD, 38, and his wife, Shelley, 34, glucose-6-phosphate-dehydrogenase
deficiency (G6PD) was just scientific jargon -- until the birth
of their first son, John. The baby's rising bilirubin levels
required a rush return to Mount Sinai Hospital.
Without symptoms, Mrs.
LLOYD notes, "tests revealed I had… the
most common human enzyme deficiency, affecting 400 million people."
Its hallmarks are hyper-jaundice in newborns, and childhood and
adult food and drug allergies. Treatment in an incubator included
being fitted with protective goggles while exposed to phototherapy.
Today, John is a healthy 2½-year-old, albeit with dietary restrictions.
His brother, Michael, 6 pounds 10 ounces, who was born on May 15,
also at Mount Sinai, exhibited more severe symptoms, which necessitated
intravenous, transfusions and nasogastric feeding, in addition
to phototherapy.
Happily, on May 27, he was discharged, but his mother cautions
new parents: "Be aware of signs of jaundice in your newborn,
including lethargy, which can appear as if you have a quiet,
sleepy, good baby."
