Century partier looking forward
By Amy SHARAF, Free Press Reporter, Fri., December 30, 2005
Naomi FRANCE has 100 years of living she can look back on, but she's looking ahead instead.
With a federal election only weeks away, FRANCE, who turned 100 yesterday, says she's ready to cast her ballot.
"There'll be voting soon and I'm interested in that, who's going to (win). The Liberals are down a lot now, I don't know why," she said yesterday as she celebrated her 100th birthday in style, surrounded by family and Friends at Maple Village for Seniors in London.
Born December 29, 1905, FRANCE has lived through two world wars, seen flight grow from the Wright Brothers' modest first steps to travel into outer space, and seen the invention of computers.
Through it all, the Yorkshire-born FRANCE has remained feisty.
Wearing a lilac blouse and plum cardigan adorned with a snowman brooch, she laughed when asked what secrets she has for leading a long life.
"I think it's walking that kept me going. I think you should walk a lot. I used to walk to work for 12 years when I worked at Victoria Hospital."
FRANCE's daughter, Pamela DEGGS, said her mom's easygoing manner might explain her longevity. "Sometimes I think her blood pressure is lower than mine. She doesn't really get upset. Maybe that's why she lived so long."
FRANCE was a registered psychiatric nurse in England, where she grew up. When she moved to Canada in 1958, she worked on the psychiatric floor at Victoria Hospital.
Though she was just a child during the First World War, she remembers the food rationing across Europe.
"I used to stand in line for margarine. (During) the Second World War, there was more food, (but) things like bananas and oranges I never saw until after the war."
FRANCE recalls the celebrations when the bombs stopped dropping and the fighting finally ended.
"A lot of the girls used to get up and dance on the tables we were so happy," she said, laughing. "After two wars, you're so happy for it to be over."
Her love of dancing didn't end when the bombing stopped. She remembers tearing up the dance floor with her late husband, who was also a talented piano player.
"We used to have some really good times. Someone always had a party somewhere," she said. "I used to love dancing. That was my fun thing. I liked to drink, too, have some champagne."
With both former husbands long dead, FRANCE said she doesn't dance anymore, because "it's not the same without your partner."
Now she spends a lot of her time reading and tracking the news, including the latest on the election front.
While she regrets growing old means losing good Friends, she points to something she'll always have -- family. Two of her three children are still alive and she has 11 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.

The Name Game: Why we named our baby Cooper
By Raju MUDHAR
Unlike most couples, Kristen and Lindsay SHARPE had a pretty good idea what they were going to name their first child long before it was born.
Cooper Lindsay SHARPE came into the world on June 2, 2005, at 6 pounds , 13 oz.
"We had a boy and girl name all set," says Kristen, 33, a self-employed health-care consultant. "Actually, we talked about Cooper years ago and decided that we would probably use it. It's my mother's maiden name, so it's also my grandparents' last name. There was even a time when we were going to use Cooper even if it was a girl, but then we veered off."
While everyone in her family is thrilled with the name, some wiseacre Friends have teased them about it.
"They all think we named him after the car," says Kristen. "Like when they email, it's like, 'How's the Mini Cooper doing?'"
The middle name, Lindsay, is also his father's, and Cooper is the fourth generation to carry it.
"But I think they made a mistake four generations ago and spelled it the way girls do," she jokes, "so now we're kind of stuck with it."
Around the house, the new addition is called Coop.
But what if the baby had been a girl? What would the name have been then?
"I can't tell you that," Kristen says. "I haven't even told my mom."

108-year-old takes it one day at a time
Mabel SHAW to mark birthday Saturday
By Bill HENRY, Page A1
One of Canada's oldest residents sees her 108th birthday Saturday as just another day in a long and happy life.
"That's all you can do is live one day at a time. You don't have anything to do with yesterday or tomorrow," Mabel SHAW said at her home in Markdale recently.
She was born Margaret Mabel MATTHEWS in Meaford on July 8, 1898, the oldest of five children to Hannah and Richard and the family's only daughter.
It was a much different world when Mabel married Earl SHAW in 1922, at the age of 24. The family the couple started together in Clarksburg with two children, Velma and Elwood, has grown to include 11 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
"A while ago they made me a great-great-grandmother. It's not everybody that gets that," Mabel said.
Relatively active until past her 100th year, Mabel has lost much of her hearing but is mostly healthy and keeps a keen interest in family activities, her daughter Velma SPENCER said recently.
More than anything else, that large family has been the central focus of her mother's life, said SPENCER, 83.
"The strongest thread in her life is her family," she said. "As long as her family and her Friends were around her, mother was quite content."
SPENCER said the family has a "very strong Irish background" with roots in County Donegal, although Mabel has never been there. She travelled across Canada once, but otherwise travelled relatively little.
The two women, both widowed now, have lived together for several years at 33 Sproule St. in Markdale, where they plan a birthday open house Saturday from 2 to 4 p.m.
"I don't go out any more," Mabel said. "I just stay put. I had my day out, I guess."
Raised on a farm, Mabel SHAW worked as a mother's helper and at several jobs before marriage, then never worked again outside the home, SPENCER said.
In the early years of their marriage, Earl carried the mail in Thornbury and Clarksburg, at first on horseback, then later with a horse-drawn bus.
When their son Elwood came home from the Second World War, he bought a farm and lived and farmed there with his parents until his marriage. Mabel and Earl then spent several years north of Toronto where Earl was a farm manager before buying a farm in the Markdale area in 1963. That was at an age when many people are considering retirement. Instead, her parents farmed that land until her father was in his late 80s, SPENCER said.
"To start farming when you're in your 60s is certainly not what most people would think of as retirement," SPENCER said.
Her father died in 1993 at the age of 92, said SPENCER, who raised two daughters, Janice and Suzanne, with her late husband Douglas SPENCER.
"I think the thing we most appreciate is that mother is in good health, mentally and physically," her daughter said recently.
SPENCER said her mother has lived a happy life. She was always social with Friends and especially family, enjoying community events, card parties and other gatherings. But her life has also been quietly private.
"Mother's main interest in life in my lifetime has just been her family, her Friends, her community," SPENCER said. "She's always been a very private person, just a homebody really."
