A long vigil, including a chilling moment when the baby's heartbeat couldn't be found, ended when Jaffery SAJID became a Father's Day dad.

After a long night of suspense -- and one heart-chilling scare -- Jaffery SAJID became a new father on Father's Day. SAJID, 32, and his wife, Shamaila, 27, are the proud parents of a baby boy.
Shamaila gave birth at 8: 50 a.m. After two visits to St. Joseph's Health Care Saturday night, Shamaila was finally admitted at 9 p.m.
"The nurses were teasing me that they were going to prolong the labour so that I could be a father on Father's Day," SAJID said, laughing. "I guess they didn't need to."
SAJID says his son's birth came as a surprise because he and his wife were expecting a girl.
"The symptoms were different during the pregnancy and the doctors told us that usually means the sex will be different than the pregnancy before," he said.
The couple's four-year-old son, Ammar was at a friend's waiting to give his dad a Father's Day gift. "Ammar made something in school and his teachers told him to wait until today."
SAJID, who works for TD Visa, said he was excited and happy to be a father but his job yesterday was to support his wife.
"I had to keep my nervousness under control because she needed me," he said.
Keeping those feelings under control was hard for him when the delivery hit a few bumps. At one point, doctors could not detect the baby's heartbeat.
"I was overcome by my feelings and she could see the look in my eyes," he said. "I just had to reassure her that things would be okay and not worry myself."
The doctors found the heartbeat and delivered the boy, who weighed seven pounds, 14 ounces.
SAJID didn't have much advice for expecting fathers other than to be there for their wives.
"She trusts you more than all of those doctors and nurses, so you need to reassure her and tell her things will be okay."
Exactly a year before, Shamaila had come to Canada from Pakistan as a landed immigrant. "It just gives us extra cause to celebrate," SAJID said.

'Murphy's Law was ruling the day November 25," Win SAKDINAN says. That was when his wife Stefanie's contractions coincided with the season's first serious snowfall. "We couldn't leave until my parents arrived to take care of our three-year-old, Ben, and as they frantically made their way through the snow, I could see from my window 16th Avenue, which leads to the 404, jammed solid."
During a 45-minute rush-hour odyssey to North York General Hospital, her contractions intensified. "I thought if I took my seatbelt off and rammed my back into the handle of the door for some counter-pressure, it would help, and maybe a policeman would see me not wearing my belt and get me to the hospital for my epidural," Mrs. SAKDINAN recalls.
Meanwhile, her husband mulled "putting the hazard lights on and riding the shoulder, but there was too much snow."
The couple, both 34, took prenatal classes based on a pain-placated delivery, but when they got to the hospital, she was fully dilated. "I had to do it with no drugs -- just suck it up and do it. I never thought I'd have the strength," she admits.
Twenty minutes later, Jacob Win SAKDINAN arrived au naturel at 6 pounds, 13 ounces.
The family's next adventure will be three years in Geneva, where Mr. SAKDINAN will be part of a new product innovation team with Procter and Gamble.
