Why we named her Mysha Annabelle
By Kristin
RUSHOWY
Given a choice among names meaning perfect, peace or eternal
happiness, Sohaileh
HUSSEIN and Jim
STACK chose the last.
It wasn't that Kamilah and Sarina weren't great. But once they
found Mysha, "we agreed on it immediately, without a doubt."
"Jim's Ukrainian, and I'm of Muslim ancestry," says Sohaileh.
"We wanted a name that was unique, but easy to pronounce... so
we went to a website for Muslim names, and we found Mysha.
"We thought that was a good name because in Russian, which is
close to Ukrainian, it's a boys' nickname for little mouse."
The couple learned they were having a girl through an ultrasound.
"We did want to know," Sohaileh says, "then you know to buy everything
pink."Even though Mysha (pronounced mee-shah) gave a nod to both
their backgrounds, they weren't trying to please their families.
Annabelle's a tribute to Jim's female relatives who have Anna-type
names.
"We let a few people know, immediate family," Sohaileh says.
"They thought it was a good blend for the two of us."
Mysha Annabelle was born August 22 at Toronto's Mount Sinai hospital.
Sohaileh, a doctor, is now on maternity leave from her family
practice in the city's west-end, and Jim is a model.

Why we named her Gracie Marmel
By Kristin
RUSHOWY
With their eldest, Ella, it took 24 hours. With son Nathan, a
couple of days.
But when Lisa
VOGEL and David
SERBER's latest family member arrived,
it took just moments to rule out Jasmine, Olivia, Betty, Ruby
and Vivian.
Gracie Marmel it was.
"Pretty much when she came out, I looked at my husband and said
'Do you think it's Gracie?'" says Lisa.
David did.
The Toronto couple liked Gracie -- not Grace -- "because it has
charm." Besides, the couple is Jewish, "and Grace is too non-Jewish."
Gracie also has the retro feel their other children's names have.
"You think of Gracie (Allen) and (George) Burns," says Lisa,
who runs her own advertising agency, Mama Media, while David
works in the financial sector.
"It fits in with the other kids' names... all of our kids have
names that are warm."
As well, in the Jewish tradition, all of their children's names
pay tribute to family members.
They chose Marmel as a middle name in honour of a close cousin
who died just days before Gracie was born November 4.
"Gracie makes you think of someone graceful, and Marmel was graceful,"
Lisa says.

Why we named him Foster
By Kristin
RUSHOWY
They'd almost settled on August.
But when art director Lionel
BEBBINGTON and Kristin
BROADHEAD
told Friends about the name they were considering for their second
son, it raised more than a few eyebrows.
"We told people and they said it was a girl's name," said
BROADHEAD.
So the Toronto couple settled on their other top choice, Foster.
"Family members didn't like it at first… but my mom actually
likes it now. They don't get this whole children's names thing
now -- they expect names that people were called when they were
younger."
The name Foster fits with a tradition of sorts they started with
their first son, Graydon.
"We were trying to think of something that went with Graydon's
name," says
BROADHEAD, an occupational therapy assistant, now
on maternity leave. She went through a "select few" of her 30 baby-name
books before coming across the name Foster.
They knew they were having a boy, as they did with their first
baby, "and I liked the sound of Foster. The name Graydon has
a surname sound to it, like Foster. And it was unique."
And they could live with the images that came to mind (Foster's
Lager, foster child).
Upon his arrival January 7, Foster Richard Ian
BEBBINGTON weighed
8 pounds

By Judith TENENBAUM,

After getting married in June, 2005, Oakville residents Nicholle
and John RUSSELL were anxious to start a family. They discovered
she was pregnant in August, and the Chinese gender-calendar predicted
that they could conceive a boy.
Mrs. RUSSELL, a paragon of planning, assembled maternity haute
couture, furnished the nursery, prepared and froze dinners, and
switched on the baby monitor. Readiness yielded to reality on
May 12, at Oakville Trafalgar Hospital, when a boy -- 8-pound
15-ounce Aidan Charles Thomas
RUSSELL -- emerged eight days overdue
but healthy. His transfused mother fared less well, putting a
brief damper on the celebrations. Happily, she's now recovering,
and I (the proud grandmother) am helping with her convalescence.
Mrs. RUSSELL, 34, and Mr.
RUSSELL, 45, whose first date was at
a hockey game, consider Aidan an early fan. Sporting his Maple
Leafs mini-jersey, he gurgles with delight as the trio watch
the playoffs. Baby Aidan will be an only child, as are his mother
and grandfather.

Smith 'leaping' into his 20th birthday
The chances of being born on February 29 are one in 1,462, with
about 20,000 in Canada.
By Stefania
MORETTI,
Special To
Sun
Media, Tues., February 26,
Paul Leigh
SMITH has had fewer birthdays than his 24-year-old
grand_son Joel
McMILLAN. A leap-year baby,
SMITH will turn 80
on his 20th birthday Friday.
SMITH has been married 60 years
and has 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. (Derek
RUTTAN,
Sun
Media)
With 65 years experience operating gourmet food outlets in the
city, 60 years of marriage, 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren,
Paul Leigh
SMITH will celebrate his 20th birthday on Friday.
SMITH, founder of Hasbeans Ltd., is a leap-year baby. And while
he isn't planning much for his 20th, he enjoys having a rare
and special birthday.
"Growing up, I was very proud of being different," said
SMITH,
born February 29, 1928, at the family's Clarence Street home,
just blocks from where his specialty coffee shop has been serving
up fresh java since 1969.
SMITH wasn't the only "leaper" in the family. His grandfather
was one, too, although he wouldn't venture to guess from which
year.
"How would I know? I'm only 20,"
SMITH jested.
"My kids used to ask me, 'How old are you daddy?' I would tease
and say '11.' "
SMITH's
Irish heritage meant men in the family were commonly
taunted during a leap year. According to Irish folklore, February 29
was the only day a woman should ask for a man's hand in marriage.
"No woman ever proposed to me though,"
SMITH joked.
SMITH was engaged to be married on what would have been his fifth
birthday during a leap year in 1948. He and his wife Donna will
celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary on October 9.
After 120 years of
SMITH family-owned produce, deli and coffee
kiosks at the Convent Garden Market, fifth-generation
SMITHs
still greet patrons with a cup of Joe and a smile.
Joel McMILLAN, 24,
SMITH's grand_son, has worked at Hasbeans Ltd.
since he was a boy.
"Gramps is more 20 than he is 80," said
McMILLAN, explaining
how SMITH embraces change unlike most people his age.
The chances of being born on February 29 are one in 1,462. There
are roughly 20,000 "leapers" in Canada and more than four million
worldwide.
Dianne DAL
BELLO, a nurse at London Health Sciences Centre and
a leap year baby, is fascinated by the statistics.
But, as a child, she was less impressed with her February 29
birthday.
"At times I felt as though something was missing, even when I
celebrated a day early or a day late."
This year,
DAL
BELLO is celebrating her 11th birthday at age
44. She's looking forward to a special dinner with her husband
and the couple plans a trip to Dublin in June.
DAL
BELLO described that as her most extravagant birthday yet.
"My sweet 16 might stick out as a big one, too, but I'm not quite
there yet," she said with a laugh.
