RAPLEY says the secret to
longevity is being born on Friday, the 13th, and since she just
celebrated her 105th birthday, she might just be right.
Over 60 Friends and family were invited to Country Manor in Thedford
on Wednesday, September 13 to be part of Charlotte's birthday celebration.
Miss RAPLEY greeted and chatted with each of her well-wishers,
although she admits to not always recognizing their faces.
“Once someone told me who they were, I remembered them,” said
Miss RAPLEY with a smile.
Having spent the last six years in Thedford hasn't reduced the
number of Friends Miss
RAPLEY still has in Strathroy.
A majority of those in attendance, including organizer Doctor Mary
WRIGHT, were from the Strathroy area.
Born and raised in Strathroy, Miss
RAPLEY was a household name
among students having worked in the cafeteria of the local high
school for several years.
Among her many accomplishments, Miss
RAPLEY graduated with a
bachelor's degree from the University of Toronto in 1925; this
at a time when achieving post secondary education wasn't an easy task for women.
Miss RAPLEY was a dietitian for seven years in New York, before
returning home to Strathroy during the Great Depression.
The RAPLEY family has a long and well known history in Strathroy.
Charlotte's grandfather William moved to Strathroy from England
in 1832. He settled in what is now known as Napier.
“He sold the farm in 1857 and moved into Strathroy,” explained Charlotte.
Her father Herbert is credited with bringing Gilbert and Sullivan
productions to the old Lyceum Theatre on Frank Street.
Several of Miss

the Evangelist Church, where she was the organist from 1933 to 1943.
