HOWKE of Southampton celebrated her 100th birthday
in style over the weekend.
Some 200 family members and Friends took part in the biggest
birthday party the Southampton Care Centre has seen.
"We've only had two or three residents reach 100 while here,"
said activity co-ordinator Susan
KNECHTEL, and this is by far
the largest celebration we've ever had."
Born
November 9, 1906,
HOWKE left home at age 17 to go to teacher's
college in Toronto using her older sister's identification because
she was too young to be accepted. After starting out in a small
country school,
HOWKE ended up teaching at Southampton's G.C.
Huston Public Scbool, now the Bruce County Museum and Cultural
Centre's archives.
"She always believed in equal opportunity," says Trudy
PEIRSON,
a former student of
HOWKE's. "
She insisted that both boys and
girls do everything the same, including learning to knit!"
HOWKE is still an avid knitter having produced hundreds of teddy
bears that are sent through Doctors without Borders to children
in underdeveloped countries.
"I took up knitting again seriously at 91 so that I could be
part of this program,"
HOWKE said. "You have to keep busy and
you have to feel that you're being of use."
HOWKE received many tributes including a signed note and photo
from the Queen, a letter from Gov.-Gen. Michaelle Jean and certificates
from both Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Premier Dalton McGuinty.
