Simona CHIOSE, 35, and Paul FAIRWEATHER, 47, had come up empty-handed after scouring their family trees for a name worthy of the first Canadian-born child in either of their clans.
Knowing he would be a boy, Ms. CHIOSE took to a baby book and soon happened upon the name Spencer. Bingo. Mr. FAIRWEATHER's grandmother had lived on a street called Spencer in Coventry, England. Mr. FAIRWEATHER, now a photographer, lived with her there for a period during his teens.
"She had this great coach house, full of characters," says Ms. CHIOSE, who is a journalist and University of Toronto PhD student. "There was an alcoholic who gave piano lessons and a bow-tied guy who collected dirty magazines. It was like the Hotel New Hampshire -- there'll be a treasure trove of stories."
Then, she flipped the pages to the name Galin.
"My grandmother's name was Galina," says Ms. CHIOSE, who was born in Romania. "Galin means small and lively in Gaelic. So he really is connected physically and spiritually to the old world."
Spencer Galin FAIRWEATHER made his debut February 6, weighing a small and lively 6 pounds.

Breaking news! TSN has just learned that 1 1/2hrs. before the drop of the puck for the Memorial Cup Championship Game the Ontario Hockey League's London Knights have confirmed their #1 Draft Selection. Tyler Tremaine ENTWISTLE was selected at 3: 08 p.m. on May 29, '05 from (London Health Sciences Centre) Westminster Campus. At selection time Tyler Stats. 10 pounds 0 oz, 20 in. long and shoots left. Mom says Tyler's training camp was great but he started to get aggressive in the corners during the last month. Older brother Preston says with some rigorous conditioning Tyler should be able to patrol the blue line alongside himself for the upcoming season. Special thanks goes out to the scouting staff, Katherine WALLACE, Marie HATHERALL, Jane ERDMAN (Woman Care Midwives) and Carol PEAT (Wholistic Bodyworks) who monitored Tyler's progress over the past 9 months.
