Why we named our baby Melissa Harley

Ronnie and Jennifer PULIS knew what they didn't want for a name. The couple figured since they threw the Bible at a son -- Joshua David John PULIS, now 3 -- they could have a little fun with his baby sister.
Born▲ on March 2, Melissa Harley PULIS will definitely be her own girl.
"We liked names that ended with 'a.' You know, like Cassandra, Vanessa, Angela," says Ronnie, a 40-year-old store manager. "But the other thing was, Jennifer didn't want to use the name of anybody we knew, or I had dated.
"We liked Melissa, and what sort of confirmed it was that Melissa was on both of her godparents' lists."
As far as Harley goes, she'll probably have to answer motorcycle questions her entire life, but...
"No, there is no biker connection," he says.
"In the Jewish faith, when someone passes, you name a child using the first letter of their name," says Jennifer, 37, a director of sales. "My grandfather's name was Henry. Well, we couldn't name her that, and we didn't want a Hailey or a Heather. But then we heard Harley, and just loved it. It's just so unique."

Due date was Remembrance Day

When Lisa and Gary DOUGLAS/DOUGLASS first heard that their baby was due on November 11, they knew they had the perfect name for her: Poppy.
"It fit because of Remembrance Day, but we just thought it was just so cute," says Lisa, 33, who is on maternity leave from her government job.
Unfortunately, her relatives weren't so supportive.
"They were like, 'Poppy, what's that?' They couldn't see the cuteness, I guess," she says. "I think they would have preferred a more Italian name."
Even those who weren't too keen on it started giving the couple the commemorative Poppy quarters that were released last year.
However, luckily for those relatives, Olivia Peyton Poppy DOUGLAS/DOUGLASS is an impatient girl, and decided to enter this world on November 2, 2004, weighing 7 pounds and 14 ounces.
"We had already picked out the middle names for her. We chose Olivia because of the main character from Law and Order SVU. We just love that show, and that's the name of one of the main characters. But when she was born, we got a look at her and decided that Olivia just fits her," says Lisa.
She also likes to joke that her husband, Gary, 42, would like to say that the Peyton comes from his favourite football player -- Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning -- but actually it was just the name of another cute baby girl that they saw. Poppy settled in as her third name.
Unlike most parents who agonize over names, the DOUGLASes obviously have them in abundance.
"I had so many names that I liked, I guess I'm just going to have to have more children just to use them all," she jokes.

The Name Game: Why we named our baby Cooper

Unlike most couples, Kristen and Lindsay SHARPE had a pretty good idea what they were going to name their first child long before it was born.
Cooper Lindsay SHARPE came into the world on June 2, 2005, at 6 pounds , 13 oz.
"We had a boy and girl name all set," says Kristen, 33, a self-employed health-care consultant. "Actually, we talked about Cooper years ago and decided that we would probably use it. It's my mother's maiden name, so it's also my grandparents' last name. There was even a time when we were going to use Cooper even if it was a girl, but then we veered off."
While everyone in her family is thrilled with the name, some wiseacre Friends have teased them about it.
"They all think we named him after the car," says Kristen. "Like when they email, it's like, 'How's the Mini Cooper doing?'"
The middle name, Lindsay, is also his father's, and Cooper is the fourth generation to carry it.
"But I think they made a mistake four generations ago and spelled it the way girls do," she jokes, "so now we're kind of stuck with it."
Around the house, the new addition is called Coop.
But what if the baby had been a girl? What would the name have been then?
"I can't tell you that," Kristen says. "I haven't even told my mom."
