THAMES, Cienna Jade -- Hatch:
By Oliver MOORE, Saturday, May 7, 2005, Page M4
Though home delivery is increasingly common, it was hardly a matter of choice for Kevin THAMES and Heidi FULCHER.
Mr. THAMES, 46, says his wife woke up early on April 12 with slight labour pains.
While preparing to go to the hospital, the pain got so bad that Ms. FULCHER, a 41-year-old employee at York University, had to lean against the wall.
"Two minutes later, she said: 'Call 911,' recalls Mr. THAMES, a long-time letter carrier.
The 911 operator told him to get her on the floor, and once she was lying down, he could see how quickly things had progressed.
"As soon as the water broke, the baby just dropped down instantly, like a suction cup grabbed her," he says. "I saw a lot of baby head, a lot of baby hair."
Bordering on panic but churning with adrenaline, he followed the dispatcher's instructions to open the door for the paramedics and fetch a shoestring to tie off the umbilical cord, if necessary.
Luckily, the couple's Annex home is only a few doors from an ambulance station and the house was quickly crawling with emergency workers.
Within a few minutes, Cienna Jade THAMES was born in the family's bathroom, weighing 7 pounds, 7 ounces.
"Our first child wasn't like that. The second one is usually very quick, but they never said anything about being automatically-instantly," Mr. THAMES says.

Graham Robert Sean COSTER -- Hatch:
By Oliver MOORE, Saturday, May 21, 2005, Page M6
Fate intervened when a pair of high-level ultimate Frisbee players tried to time their pregnancy to coincide with the winter off-season. Hoping for a fall conception, after the ultimate season ended, Monica KERR- COSTER, 33, instead found out she was pregnant late last summer.
Their child, Graham Robert Sean COSTER, was born in Toronto at 3: 06 p.m. on March 5, weighing in at 7 pounds, 6 ounces. He is the second son for the Queen West couple.
Both mother and father, 41-year-old lawyer Robin COSTER, are avid participants in ultimate, a no-contact variation of football that uses a Frisbee-like disc instead of a ball.
The labour and delivery were both fast and blessedly smooth, Ms. Kerr-COSTER said; the only wrinkle was that the couple still hadn't chosen a third name for the child. Then, the day she went into labour, they heard about the accidental death of a good friend named Sean and decided to honour him.
"We basically made the decision as the baby was being born... and told his wife about it afterwards," Mr. COSTER said. "... She and her family are comforted a little bit by the new life coming into the world."

METCALFE, Ryder Read Kopas -- Hatch
By Oliver MOORE, Saturday, May 28, 2005, Page M6
Ryder Read Kopas METCALFE starred in his first television spot at the tender age of two weeks.
The public-service announcement for Covenant House zooms in on a baby as his devoted parents coo over him, then back out to show a teen lying in an alley. The mother keeps up the baby talk, saying, "We're gonna love you so much."
Scott METCALFE and Brigitte KOPAS, both 36, said they agreed to the appearance when asked by a friend. It helped that little Ryder had a round head, said Mr. METCALFE, a real estate agent.
The child emerged at 1: 05 a.m. on April 14 after a mad dash to Women's College Hospital from the couple's uptown home. Mr. METCALFE said he ran at least six red lights.
"They sat me in a wheelchair for an instant, but I said, 'I can't sit down,' said Ms. KOPAS, who works in fundraising for Branksome Hall. The doctor arrived in time to catch the baby. Ryder was 2½ weeks early and weighed 7 pounds, 11 ounces.

VOGTLE, Emma Katrijn -- Hatch:
By Oliver MOORE, Saturday, June 4, 2005, Page M4
It was the loudest delivery room at Mount Sinai Hospital as Wilhelmina NELMES- VOGTLE, an opera singer, serenaded her daughter's entry into this world on May 12.
Ms. NELMES- VOGTLE found herself singing to help force relaxation, starting with recognizable bits of music, and moving to descending scales and arpeggios.
By the time Emma Katrijn VOGTLE was born, her vocalizations had changed to long-held low notes and then, eventually, to animal noises.
She says she was determined to have a natural delivery and praised the staff at the hospital for accommodating her unconventional behaviour. She and her husband, James, had a doula -- birthing coach -- assisting the delivery and Ms. NELMES- VOGTLE insisted on moving around the room, changing position as whim took her.
"I spent a lot of [labour] slow-dancing in James's arms, which was really wonderful," she says. "Anyone can do this. It goes back to the concept that the more relaxed you are in your body, the easier it will be."
The Bloor West couple were content with a childless life, but the two wondered as they aged whether they should take the plunge. After four months of discussions as they drove to and from their cottage, they decided to go ahead.
Ms. NELMES- VOGTLE was pregnant almost immediately.
"We made a conscious decision instead of just letting it slip by," says Mr. VOGTLE, a 40-year-old bank executive. "Getting pregnant was Wilhelmina's 40th-birthday present."

GRIEVE, James Edward Alexander -- Hatch:
By Oliver MOORE, Saturday, June 11, 2005, Page M6
James Edward (Jed) Alexander GRIEVE doesn't yet know how lucky he was to be born a male. Names were chosen for both genders, and his parents were toying with dubbing a daughter Jedwina.
Jed's father, Sander GRIEVE, a partner at a legal firm, admits that they probably wouldn't have gone through with it -- although the man baptized "Alexander" knows how unusual monikers have a way of sticking.
Jed's mother, Tierney, says the point was moot. "I thought it was a boy the whole time."
Jed was born the evening of April 21 more than 20 hours after the parents entered the hospital. He weighed 8 pounds, 1 ounce.
Ms. GRIEVE, a labour lawyer, says their son is cute, but very hairy. In that respect, he seems to take after his father, who admits that his own early photos show a hirsute baby.
The King West couple are already looking around their smallish digs and thinking about the family they want to raise. "Hopefully [Jed] is the first of a bunch," Ms. GRIEVE says. "Probably three to four."

Only one patient has ever asked nurse Robina ABRAMSON on a date while she was on duty. She said yes, married him and last month the couple had their first child.
Before going to the hospital for surgery and four days of convalescence, E.J. ABRAMSON says he had joked with his dad that it would be great if he met a beautiful nurse. "And lo and behold, I did."
Ms. ABRAMSON hesitated before accepting his request for a date, even approaching the College of Nurses to see about the professional propriety. But since he was not directly in her care, there was no problem, and they went on their first date the day he was released.
Fast-forward four years to May 11 and the Riverdale couple found themselves in hospital again for the birth of their son, Hayden Jake, who weighed a little less than six pounds.
Ms. ABRAMSON, a pain management specialist well versed in painkilling and relaxation techniques, says delivery came after "a very good labour."

ENG, Caitlyn Gwen-Lei -- Hatch:
By Oliver MOORE, Saturday, July 9, 2005, Page M4
It was the fear of gossip that drove Sunnybrook and Women's College doctor Betty CHEN to give birth in another hospital.
Well, partly, she also didn't want special treatment just because she is a physician.
"I didn't really want to be where I work," she said this week. "I wanted people to be objective about my care."
As both a mother and a doctor, Dr. CHEN figured that she knew the drill going in, but she was surprised at how quickly her second daughter appeared on the scene.
Dr. CHEN, 34, said she had been expecting a day or two of labour, but little Caitlyn Gwen-Lei appeared in a rush. Only five pounds, 15 ounces, she was born mere hours after the expectant mother turned up at Mount Sinai Hospital.
"I'm a family doctor who delivers babies as part of my practice. I was totally prepared and knew what to expect," she said. "It just totally exceeded all my expectations, it was so fast."
Caitlyn joins a growing North Toronto family that already includes two-year-old Lisa and Ken ENG, 33, Dr. CHEN's ophthalmologist husband.

VEFFER, Thomas Joseph Guy -- Hatch:
By Oliver MOORE, Saturday, July 16, 2005, Page M6
The new parents whose mad dash to the hospital got mired in Pride Week revellers want to find the police officers who gave them an escort.
Kimberley SILK says her pre-labour started on a Saturday afternoon, although she and her husband didn't think much of it at the time. But she gave birth less than 12 hours after the first minor twinges.
When the crunch suddenly came, the parents scooted down Mount Pleasant Road from their Davisville-area home. They didn't expect it to be a long drive, but turning right onto Carlton Street, they ran into hordes of people taking part in Gay Pride celebrations.
"There was a huge traffic jam," said Ms. SILK, a 36-year-old entrepreneur. "It was just completely solid between Jarvis and, I guess, Yonge Street."
Desperate, Ms. SILK and her husband, Jeffrey VEFFER, a 39-year-old manager at Bell Canada, flagged down a police car. The officer driving the cruiser "rolled his eyes," but then gave them a siren-blaring escort.
The officers ushered them into Mount Sinai Hospital moments later and went back out on patrol.
The couple didn't even get the officers' full names, knowing them only as Malcolm and Shawn (or maybe Sean).
Thomas Joseph Guy was born not long after, at 1: 03 a.m., weighing seven pounds, one ounce.
He is their first child.

Shade Star Pirate HANSEN -- Hatch:
By Oliver MOORE, Saturday, July 23, 2005, Page M4
Her parents accept that, some day, she will hate them for the name they gave her. But they couldn't resist.
The high-school sweethearts settled on Shade when still in Grade 12. They chose Star because they're big Star Wars fans. And the couple, who married at Disneyland, added Pirate for their favourite ride, Pirates of the Caribbean.
Shade Star Pirate HANSEN was born early in the morning of July 12, weighing in at six pounds, eight ounces.
She is the first child of Mark and Melissa HANSEN, both 30. "We've been together for 15, 16 years," Mr. HANSEN said.
"We thought it might be fun, our next big adventure together," his wife said. "It's been a lot more fun than we expected it to be."
The delivery was fast, almost too fast, coming after the couple called the Telehealth line and was told, politely and professionally, to get themselves to a hospital immediately. The girl was born within 45 minutes. "I think it runs in the family; I think my mother had me in half an hour," Ms. HANSEN said.

Unable to have any more children and pining for the one she gave up for adoption, Judy WOOSTER jumped at the chance to celebrate the "rebirth" of her 46-year-old daughter.
They found each other about five weeks ago, nearly a half-century after Ms. WOOSTER was forced to give her up and more than two decades after she starting looking. Elated, Ms. WOOSTER took the unusual step of posting a birth notice. "To me, as far as I was concerned, she had been born again, given back to me," she explained.
Her daughter supported the idea. "It blew me away," Lesley Ruth OATES said. "Mom so eloquently included my parents in the birth announcement, it just hit the core of my soul."
Although Ms. WOOSTER is overjoyed at seeing her daughter again, her mood darkens when she describes a situation all too common in 1950s Toronto. Pregnant at 17, she was sent to a home for unmarried mothers, unable to go outside lest someone see her.
"They take a child away at birth, they did then, you didn't even get a chance to see it," said Ms. WOOSTER, a retired librarian who grew up in North Toronto and now lives in Willowdale.
Ms. OATES is married with four children of her own. She lives in Bracebridge, but expects a lot of travel back and forth to Willowdale.

VERMEER, Holly Summer -- Hatch:
By Oliver MOORE, Saturday, September 3, 2005, Page M6
Kelly VERMEER had to quit her job a few months before most expecting moms -- the rules say pilots can't fly in the last stages of pregnancy.
The 35-year-old, who works for Air Georgian, says, "I miss being up in the sky.... I've always loved flying, there's nothing that compares to that feeling."
Nothing, perhaps, except watching her newborn daughter develop. "To see her grow from this tiny vulnerable package... it's been really impressive to see the growth and the development," Ms. VERMEER says.
Like most new parents, every time Ms. VERMEER turns around Holly Summer seems to be doing something for the first time. Flying again will take her away from that, but at least Ms. VERMEER has enough seniority to have a crack at flights taking her back home the same day.
The first daughter of Ms. VERMEER and her husband, Donald, also 35, Holly Summer was born a shade over six pounds on the last day of April -- coincidentally sharing a birthday with her great-aunt.
The newborn's father settled in Toronto to work for FedEx but the Australian hasn't forgotten his love of surfing. Holly's middle name is a nod to that love, Ms. VERMEER explains, a way to keep the summer close forever.

Expectant parents Theresa STOKES and Chuck TIERNEY were cutting it close -- they listed their home only weeks before their first child was due.
They lived in a desirable part of Burlington, Ms. STOKES explained, so they thought they would sell in no time. But their daughter threw a wrench into the plans when she was born more than two weeks early.
Knowing prospective buyers could be in to view the house in their absence, Ms. STOKES, 36, and her husband spent a few minutes tidying up -- even after her water broke -- before rushing to Trillium Health Centre in Mississauga.
"We're making the bed, we're opening the blinds," she said with a rueful laugh.
Mr. TIERNEY, 46, wasted no time driving and the couple managed to get to the hospital around 3 a.m. on August 10. Carleigh Marie was born seven hours later, weighing 5 pounds, 7 ounces. The next day they were home again and adjusting to life with a newborn, helped by her godparents, Aunt Rosemary and Uncle Brian.
In their absence, a few people did see the house. The couple sold it this week.

All three of Robert and Marisa LITRENTA's children were big at birth and had to be delivered by C-section. Offered the chance to book their latest child's birth for the day of their anniversary, they resisted at first.
"We initially thought it probably wouldn't be a good idea to have it on our anniversary," Mr. LITRENTA says. "But options ran out."
Although residents of Etobicoke, they went to St. Michael's Hospital in downtown Toronto for the procedure. Luca was born on August 9, weighing 10 pounds, 4 ounces.
Ms. LITRENTA says there are advantages to having larger-than-normal babies: "They're hungry, but they're easy to manage." Still, she's grateful for help with her children. Besides Luca, they include Francesca, 5, and Elisa, 3.
Both teachers, the LITRENTAs agree their experience raising children has changed their approach to the classroom. "When you have your own children and are teaching other children, you've got a whole new twist on things," says Ms. LITRENTA.

Two-year-old Griffin appears fond of his new baby sister, but he is also a bit confused by the relationship.
"He seems to like her," says Erin WALSH, the mother of three-week-old Paisley Margaret Walsh BALL. "Before she was born, he'd call her 'my baby.' And even now, he'll come home and say, 'Where's my baby?' "
Paisley, the second child for Ms. WALSH and her husband of three years, Trevor BALL, was delivered on August 30 at North York General, a short drive from the couple's home in the area near Yonge Street and Lawrence Avenue. The birth was smooth, and Ms. WALSH says her mood was greatly helped in the delivery room by the presence of both her husband and a good friend.
Home quickly with no complications, Paisley has been back to hospital twice already -- but not for herself. Ms. WALSH's mother, Margaret WALSH, who has been in hospital since the birth, is as keen as any grandmother to see the baby.
Once she is out, the family can continue a ritual they started with Griffin, visiting the elder Ms. WALSH in Ajax and going out for a meal that includes French fries. If she's anything like her brother -- a variation on "French fries" was one of his first words -- little Paisley must be eager to get started.

By Oliver MOORE, Saturday, October 22, 2005, Page M6
Being born big may have saved the life of Nicolas Joaquim Rodrigues ISABEL, who was born with a rare heart condition.
Nicolas was rushed into surgery when he was less than a day old, and his 9¾ pounds gave doctors lots to work with. "You can imagine open-heart surgery on a smaller baby," says his father, Nelson.
The infant seemed perfectly normal at his birth on August 20. But he refused food and within hours he was showing symptoms of distress.
Nicolas was diagnosed with total anomalous pulmonary venous drainage, a rare condition in which blood doesn't flow properly into the heart, and was taken to the Hospital for Sick Children. When his parents saw him after surgery, his tiny body was riddled with tubes and instruments. "It was like a really bad dream," his mother, Marguerett ISABEL, says.
But the couple, both 31, say Nicolas recovered fast from then on. They praise the Sick Kids medical team led by Dr. Glen VAN ARSDELL.
The ISABELs had been trying for years to have a baby, but Ms. ISABEL says they're in no hurry to have another child: "We want to spoil this one before we have any more."

When he heard his wife was pregnant again, Don FOWELL snapped out of his half-sleep and sent an urgent e-mail message.
"He has a Blackberry, which is always next to his bed," said his wife, Olga THIAKOS. " The first thing he does is e-mail the car dealership where we'd just leased a car, to order the seven-seater instead of the five-seater."
Unable to face a blandly sensible vehicle -- "We're downtowners and minivans are for the 'burbs," said Ms. THIAKOS -- they opted for a Volvo sport utility vehicle. Friends and family come second to logistics, apparently, in a family with a trio of children under the age of 2. The couple had planned to have only their twins, Julia and John, and news of Alyssa Jennifer Margaret came out of the blue.
Ms. THIAKOS, a 37-year-old business consultant, remembers being baffled by the unusual emotions and sicknesses she was struggling with, but for a few months it didn't occur to her she might be pregnant.
Mr. FOWELL, a 35-year-old financial planner, says he didn't take the symptoms seriously at first. "I said, 'You probably have a cold.' She said, 'No, I'm pregnant.' "
Alyssa was born October 11 at Mount Sinai Hospital and is now home, growing fast and being safeguarded from the rambunctious love showered on her by Julia and John.

By Oliver MOORE, Saturday, November 5, 2005, Page M4
Pico's parents were firm in the choice of his name, fending off the criticism of relatives who insisted he would be the butt of jokes in school.
The announcement came after a long and difficult delivery at Women's College Hospital. The mother, Carla TONELLI, a journalist, had hoped for an all-natural birth, but after her labour persisted, she was induced on September 15 -- 57 hours after her water had broken.
The name was kept secret until the birth, father Gregor MADDEN explains, so they could unveil the baby and his moniker like "a piece of art." After an initial storm of protest ("My mom called him 'Orange Pekoe,' Ms. TONELLI says,) relatives came around, grudgingly.
Keen travellers, Ms. TONELLI and Mr. MADDEN named their first child after travel writer Pico Iyer. They like that the name is not associated with one particular culture. Mr. MADDEN, a network administrator, says there's also a technical meaning that appeals to him. "Pico" means one-trillionth, so the name marks his son as one of a kind.

"I remember one season that was pretty hellish and I thought, 'If I can do this, I can survive the first few months of mommyhood,' " the Guelph resident says. "After planting, most people feel pretty invincible."

Ms. McGOWAN and her husband, David BARTRAM, 41, wrestled with the idea of having a child. The two had carved out a pleasant life together. But once they made the decision, they were expecting almost immediately. "It was about two days," he remembers.
It was the couple's love of nature that inspired them to choose the name North. It was almost Benjamin's first name, Ms. McGOWAN says. "We chickened out. We were worried it was a bit of an 'Apple' -- you know, Gwyneth Paltrow's baby."

"He's just in my arms, fascinated by this phone call, staring at the phone with big eyes, wondering what I'm saying," said father Garry FAST, a vice-president at Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce.
Jackson was born a week late, on October 28, and heavy -- nearly nine pounds -- after his mother was induced at Mount Sinai Hospital.
"Everybody always says, 'You can do a birth plan but don't stick to it,' mother Donna SCHWEITZER said.
It was a long pregnancy, acknowledged Ms. SCHWEITZER, who works in promotions and publicity for Columbia Tristar, and the abnormally hot temperatures the city endured didn't help. "People who weren't pregnant were complaining."
Jackson wasn't just heavy; he also measured 21 inches at birth. His father, a basketball fan, is hoping that he'll end up taller than the sons of all his ball-loving Friends.

It's important, she says, because the child is named for her late father. Her son's middle name comes from Ms. FRIZZA's Ukrainian-born husband, adding up to a moniker -- Romano Sergiy VITKOVSKY -- that's entirely suitable for the most multicultural place in the world.
Romano was born March 31, weighing 7 pounds 3 ounces, and he turned four weeks old yesterday. Ms. FRIZZA, a 36-year-old human resources professional, continues to work at finding her balance again.
"I always knew it would be a lot of work. I didn't realize I'd have no life, though," she added. "But it's joyous. I know why they make babies so cute -- otherwise you couldn't stand it."
In the rare moments they've been able to snatch since their son was born, Ms. FRIZZA and her husband, Sergiy VITKOVSKY, a 48-year-old computer programmer, have added sporadically to Romano's blog.

ROTONDO, Alysa Nicole -- Hatch:
By Oliver MOORE, Page M4
Marlene ROTONDO has been getting out and meeting other moms at Stroller Fit classes, but she may soon have to make time to take her new daughter to a hair salon.
"Even now, everybody comments on her hair," said Ms. ROTONDO, 34. "She has dark hair with chocolate highlights. She's not a bald baby -- we're talking a full head of hair."
Alysa Nicole ROTONDO was born on April 25, two weeks before her due date. She was so early that her father Mike, 39, showing his practical legal mind and knowledge from a birthing class, suggested the contractions were a false alarm.
"We didn't know what was going on," Ms. ROTONDO said, explaining why she insisted on a trip to Women's College Hospital. It was an early-morning drive downtown from the parents' Lawrence Park home, and it would be hours before a C-section allowed 8-pound, 8-ounce Alysa to make her appearance.
"I originally really, really wanted to do it naturally and I was trying really hard. But I'd been forewarned by my doctor a cesarean might be necessary," she said. In the end, "she was big for her size -- even two weeks early."
