THAMES,

Jade -- Hatch:
By Oliver MOORE,

May▼ 7, 2005, Page M4
Though home delivery is increasingly common, it was hardly a
matter of choice for Kevin
THAMES and Heidi
FULCHER.
Mr. THAMES, 46, says his wife woke up early on April 12 with
slight labour pains.
While preparing to go to the hospital, the pain got so bad that
Ms. FULCHER, a 41-year-old employee at York University, had to
lean against the wall.
"Two minutes later, she said: 'Call 911,' recalls Mr.
THAMES,
a long-time letter carrier.
The 911 operator told him to get her on the floor, and once she
was lying down, he could see how quickly things had progressed.
"As soon as the water broke, the baby just dropped down instantly,
like a suction cup grabbed her," he says. "I saw a lot of baby
head, a lot of baby hair."
Bordering on panic but churning with adrenaline, he followed
the dispatcher's instructions to open the door for the paramedics
and fetch a shoestring to tie off the umbilical cord, if necessary.
Luckily, the couple's Annex home is only a few doors from an
ambulance station and the house was quickly crawling with emergency
workers.
Within a few minutes, Cienna Jade
THAMES was born in the family's
bathroom, weighing 7 pounds, 7 ounces.
"Our first child wasn't like that. The second one is usually
very quick, but they never said anything about being automatically-instantly,"
Mr. THAMES says.
"It's a good thing we didn't leave to go the hospital 'cause
we would have been on the [street] or something."

It was the loudest delivery room at Mount Sinai Hospital as Wilhelmina
NELMES-
VOGTLE, an opera singer, serenaded her daughter's entry
into this world on May 12.
Ms. NELMES-
VOGTLE found herself singing to help force relaxation,
starting with recognizable bits of music, and moving to descending
scales and arpeggios.
By the time Emma Katrijn
VOGTLE was born, her vocalizations had
changed to long-held low notes and then, eventually, to animal
noises.
She says she was determined to have a natural delivery and praised
the staff at the hospital for accommodating her unconventional
behaviour. She and her husband, James, had a doula -- birthing
coach -- assisting the delivery and Ms.
NELMES-
VOGTLE insisted
on moving around the room, changing position as whim took her.
"I spent a lot of [labour] slow-dancing in James's arms, which
was really wonderful," she says. "Anyone can do this. It goes
back to the concept that the more relaxed you are in your body,
the easier it will be."
The Bloor West couple were content with a childless life, but
the two wondered as they aged whether they should take the plunge.
After four months of discussions as they drove to and from their
cottage, they decided to go ahead.
Ms. NELMES-
VOGTLE was pregnant almost immediately.
"We made a conscious decision instead of just letting it slip
by," says Mr.
VOGTLE, a 40-year-old bank executive. "Getting
pregnant was Wilhelmina's 40th-birthday present."

(Jed) Alexander
GRIEVE doesn't yet know how lucky
he was to be born a male. Names were chosen for both genders,
and his parents were toying with dubbing a daughter Jedwina.
Jed's father, Sander
GRIEVE, a partner at a legal firm, admits
that they probably wouldn't have gone through with it -- although
the man baptized "Alexander" knows how unusual monikers have
a way of sticking.
Jed's mother, Tierney, says the point was moot. "I thought it
was a boy the whole time."
Jed was born the evening of April 21 more than 20 hours after
the parents entered the hospital. He weighed 8 pounds, 1 ounce.
Ms. GRIEVE, a labour lawyer, says their son is cute, but very
hairy. In that respect, he seems to take after his father, who
admits that his own early photos show a hirsute baby.
The King West couple are already looking around their smallish
digs and thinking about the family they want to raise. "Hopefully
[Jed] is the first of a bunch," Ms.

Ms. ABRAMSON hesitated before accepting his request for a date,
even approaching the College of Nurses to see about the professional
propriety. But since he was not directly in her care, there was
no problem, and they went on their first date the day he was
released.
Fast-forward four years to May 11 and the Riverdale couple found
themselves in hospital again for the birth of their son, Hayden
Jake, who weighed a little less than six pounds.
Ms. ABRAMSON, a pain management specialist well versed in painkilling

It was the fear of gossip that drove Sunnybrook and Women's College
doctor Betty
CHEN to give birth in another hospital.
Well, partly, she also didn't want special treatment just because
she is a physician.
"I didn't really want to be where I work," she said this week.
"I wanted people to be objective about my care."
As both a mother and a doctor, Dr.
CHEN figured that she knew
the drill going in, but she was surprised at how quickly her
second daughter appeared on the scene.
Dr. CHEN, 34, said she had been expecting a day or two of labour,
but little Caitlyn Gwen-Lei appeared in a rush. Only five pounds,
15 ounces, she was born mere hours after the expectant mother
turned up at Mount Sinai Hospital.
"I'm a family doctor who delivers babies as part of my practice.
I was totally prepared and knew what to expect," she said. "It
just totally exceeded all my expectations, it was so fast."
Caitlyn joins a growing North Toronto family that already includes
two-year-old Lisa and Ken ENG, 33, Dr.

The new parents whose mad dash to the hospital got mired in Pride
Week revellers want to find the police officers who gave them
an escort.
Kimberley SILK says her pre-labour started on a Saturday afternoon,
although she and her husband didn't think much of it at the time.
But she gave birth less than 12 hours after the first minor twinges.
When the crunch suddenly came, the parents scooted down Mount
Pleasant Road from their Davisville-area home. They didn't expect
it to be a long drive, but turning right onto Carlton Street,
they ran into hordes of people taking part in Gay Pride celebrations.
"There was a huge traffic jam," said Ms.
SILK, a 36-year-old
entrepreneur. "It was just completely solid between Jarvis and,
I guess, Yonge Street."
Desperate, Ms.
SILK and her husband, Jeffrey
VEFFER, a 39-year-old
manager at Bell Canada, flagged down a police car. The officer
driving the cruiser "rolled his eyes," but then gave them a siren-blaring
escort.
The officers ushered them into Mount Sinai Hospital moments later
and went back out on patrol.
The couple didn't even get the officers' full names, knowing
them only as Malcolm and Shawn (or maybe Sean).
Thomas Joseph Guy was born not long after, at 1: 03 a.m., weighing

HANSEN was born early in the morning of July

Unable to have any more children and pining for the one she gave

They found each other about five weeks ago, nearly a half-century

decades after she starting looking. Elated, Ms.
WOOSTER took
the unusual step of posting a birth notice. "To me, as far as

Her daughter supported the idea. "It blew me away," Lesley Ruth
OATES said. "Mom so eloquently included my parents in the birth

Although Ms.

Kelly VERMEER had to quit her job a few months before most expecting

pregnancy.
The 35-year-old, who works for Air Georgian, says, "I miss being
up in the sky.... I've always loved flying, there's nothing that
compares to that feeling."
Nothing, perhaps, except watching her newborn daughter develop.
"To see her grow from this tiny vulnerable package... it's been
really impressive to see the growth and the development," Ms.
VERMEER says.
Like most new parents, every time Ms.
VERMEER turns around Holly
Summer seems to be doing something for the first time. Flying

The first daughter of Ms.

The newborn's father settled in Toronto to work for FedEx but

Paisley, the second child for Ms.

Yonge Street and Lawrence Avenue. The birth was smooth, and Ms.

Nicolas was rushed into surgery when he was less than a day old,
and his 9¾ pounds gave doctors lots to work with. "You can imagine
open-heart surgery on a smaller baby," says his father, Nelson.
The infant seemed perfectly normal at his birth on August 20.
But he refused food and within hours he was showing symptoms
of distress.
Nicolas was diagnosed with total anomalous pulmonary venous drainage,
a rare condition in which blood doesn't flow properly into the
heart, and was taken to the Hospital for Sick Children. When
his parents saw him after surgery, his tiny body was riddled
with tubes and instruments. "It was like a really bad dream,"

with, but for a few months it didn't occur to her she might be
pregnant.
Mr. FOWELL, a 35-year-old financial planner, says he didn't take
the symptoms seriously at first. "I said, 'You probably have
a cold.' She said, 'No, I'm pregnant.' "
Alyssa was born October 11 at Mount Sinai Hospital and is now
home, growing fast and being safeguarded from the rambunctious
love showered on her by Julia and John.

MADDEN,
Pico
Sasha
Tonelli -- Hatch
By Oliver MOORE,
Saturday,▲▼
November▼ 5, 2005, Page M4
Pico's parents were firm in the choice of his name, fending off
the criticism of relatives who insisted he would be the butt
of jokes in school.
The announcement came after a long and difficult delivery at
Women's
College
Hospital. The mother, Carla
TONELLI, a journalist,
had hoped for an all-natural birth, but after her labour persisted,
she was induced on September 15 -- 57 hours after her water had
broken.
The name was kept secret until the birth, father Gregor
MADDEN
explains, so they could unveil the baby and his moniker like
"a piece of art." After an initial storm of protest ("My mom
called him 'Orange Pekoe,' Ms.
TONELLI says,) relatives came
around, grudgingly.
Keen travellers, Ms.
TONELLI and Mr.
MADDEN named their first
child after travel writer Pico Iyer. They like that the name
is not associated with one particular culture. Mr.
MADDEN, a
network administrator, says there's also a technical meaning
that appeals to him. "Pico" means one-trillionth, so the name
marks his son as one of a kind.

BARTRAM,
Benjamin
North McGowan -- Hatch:
By Oliver MOORE,

November▲ 19, 2005, Page M5
After years as a tree planter and crew supervisor, Cheryl
McGOWAN
was pretty sure she would be able to handle the rigours of parenting.
"I remember one season that was pretty hellish and I thought,
'If I can do this, I can survive the first few months of mommyhood,'
" the Guelph resident says. "After planting, most people feel
pretty invincible."
Born
October 3, Benjamin North McGowan
BARTRAM is already comfortable
outside. Today should find him at the local farmers' market,
where his 38-year-old mom will be selling her beeswax candles.
Ms. McGOWAN and her husband, David
BARTRAM, 41, wrestled with
the idea of having a child. The two had carved out a pleasant
life together. But once they made the decision, they were expecting
almost immediately. "It was about two days," he remembers.
It was the couple's love of nature that inspired them to choose
the name North. It was almost Benjamin's first name, Ms.
McGOWAN
says. "We chickened out. We were worried it was a bit of an 'Apple'
-- you know, Gwyneth Paltrow's baby."

FAST,

Carter -- Hatch:

When he's older, the parents of Jackson Carter
FAST can tell
him he appeared in the newspaper. And his father can describe
how keenly the boy's eyes fixed on the phone as the details of
his three-week-old life were discussed.
"He's just in my arms, fascinated by this phone call, staring
at the phone with big eyes, wondering what I'm saying," said
father Garry
FAST, a vice-president at Canadian Imperial Bank
of Commerce.
Jackson was born a week late, on October 28, and heavy -- nearly
nine pounds -- after his mother was induced at Mount Sinai Hospital.
"Everybody always says, 'You can do a birth plan but don't stick
to it,' mother Donna
SCHWEITZER said.
It was a long pregnancy, acknowledged Ms.
SCHWEITZER, who works
in promotions and publicity for Columbia Tristar, and the abnormally
hot temperatures the city endured didn't help. "People who weren't
pregnant were complaining."
Jackson wasn't just heavy; he also measured 21 inches at birth.
His father, a basketball fan, is hoping that he'll end up taller
than the sons of all his ball-loving Friends.

Emotionally shaken by the tsunami that struck the Indian Ocean
during their honeymoon, Caroline
GOLDHAR and Brendon
TRAHAN came
home eager to start their family.
Away from the beach scene in Thailand, they didn't get too much
information at first. But what they learned was sobering. "We
were supposed to be in that exact spot just a week later," Ms.
GOLDHAR said.
Two weeks later they were home, Ms.
GOLDHAR at a new job in advertising
while her husband resumed his work in retail design. Although
assuming it would take some time to conceive, the parents still
heeded doctors' warnings about letting tropical-diseases medicines
work out of their systems first.
After that two-month delay, she was pregnant almost immediately.
Rachel Shirley
GOLDHAR was born weeks early on October 25, at
Toronto East General Hospital. The seven pound, three ounce baby
girl was delivered by cesarean section after "fantastic" work
by midwives.

CIMICATA,
Henry -- Hatch:
By Oliver MOORE,
Page▼ M5
Nicole MORELL already misses being pregnant.
Believing that "your heart becomes bigger" upon becoming a parent,
Ms. MORELL is not ruling out a third child. "Once you have one
kid, it doesn't seem exponentially harder," she says. But with
her husband, Steve
CIMICATA, interested in adopting, this couple
might be looking elsewhere for their next.
Filling orders frantically and painting furniture with the windows
open, Ms. MORELL was able to keep her on-line children's furnishings-and-accessories
business running almost until Henry was born on March 20 at Mount
Sinai Hospital.
His weight was "a matter of dispute," according to Mr.
CIMICATA:
After "some confusion" at the hospital, all parties concerned
have settled on 7 pounds 11 ounces.
Henry is sedate, the polar opposite of his three-year-old sister.
"Stella was born in a snowstorm and we were housebound for five
weeks," Ms.
MORELL said.
"This time, it's been great. The weather has been wonderful….
It's a good time of year to have a baby."

VITKOVSKY,
Romano
Sergiy -- Hatch:
By Oliver MOORE,
Page▲▼ M5
Michelle FRIZZA is a stickler for Italian pronunciation, so if
you can't say Romano properly, you'd be better off just calling
her son Roman.
It's important, she says, because the child is named for her
late father. Her son's middle name comes from Ms.
FRIZZA's
Ukrainian-born
husband, adding up to a moniker -- Romano Sergiy
VITKOVSKY --
that's entirely suitable for the most multicultural place in
the world.
Romano was born March 31, weighing 7 pounds 3 ounces, and he
turned four weeks old yesterday. Ms.
FRIZZA, a 36-year-old human
resources professional, continues to work at finding her balance
again.
"I always knew it would be a lot of work. I didn't realize I'd
have no life, though," she added. "But it's joyous. I know why
they make babies so cute -- otherwise you couldn't stand it."
In the rare moments they've been able to snatch since their son
was born, Ms.
FRIZZA and her husband, Sergiy
VITKOVSKY, a 48-year-old
computer programmer, have added sporadically to Romano's blog.

ROTONDO,
Alysa
Nicole -- Hatch:
By Oliver MOORE,
Page▲ M4
Marlene ROTONDO has been getting out and meeting other moms at
Stroller Fit classes, but she may soon have to make time to take
her new daughter to a hair salon.
"Even now, everybody comments on her hair," said Ms.
ROTONDO,
34. "She has dark hair with chocolate highlights. She's not a
bald baby -- we're talking a full head of hair."
Alysa Nicole
ROTONDO was born on April 25, two weeks before her
due date. She was so early that her father Mike, 39, showing
his practical legal mind and knowledge from a birthing class,
suggested the contractions were a false alarm.
"We didn't know what was going on," Ms.
ROTONDO said, explaining
why she insisted on a trip to Women's College Hospital. It was
an early-morning drive downtown from the parents' Lawrence Park
home, and it would be hours before a C-section allowed 8-pound,
8-ounce Alysa to make her appearance.
"I originally really, really wanted to do it naturally and I
was trying really hard. But I'd been forewarned by my doctor
a cesarean might be necessary," she said. In the end, "she was
big for her size -- even two weeks early."
