Pico's parents were firm in the choice of his name, fending off
the criticism of relatives who insisted he would be the butt
of jokes in school.
The announcement came after a long and difficult delivery at
Women's
College
Hospital. The mother, Carla
TONELLI, a journalist,
had hoped for an all-natural birth, but after her labour persisted,
she was induced on September 15 -- 57 hours after her water had
broken.
The name was kept secret until the birth, father Gregor
MADDEN
explains, so they could unveil the baby and his moniker like
"a piece of art." After an initial storm of protest ("My mom
called him 'Orange Pekoe,' Ms.
TONELLI says,) relatives came
around, grudgingly.
Keen travellers, Ms.
TONELLI and Mr.
MADDEN named their first
child after travel writer Pico Iyer. They like that the name
is not associated with one particular culture. Mr.
MADDEN, a
network administrator, says there's also a technical meaning
that appeals to him. "Pico" means one-trillionth, so the name
marks his son as one of a kind.
