Graham▲ -- Hatch:

For Graham
LLOYD, 38, and his wife, Shelley, 34, glucose-6-phosphate-dehydrogenase
deficiency (G6PD) was just scientific jargon -- until the birth
of their first son, John. The baby's rising bilirubin levels
required a rush return to Mount Sinai Hospital.
Without symptoms, Mrs.
LLOYD notes, "tests revealed I had… the
most common human enzyme deficiency, affecting 400 million people."
Its hallmarks are hyper-jaundice in newborns, and childhood and
adult food and drug allergies. Treatment in an incubator included
being fitted with protective goggles while exposed to phototherapy.
Today, John is a healthy 2½-year-old, albeit with dietary restrictions.
His brother, Michael, 6 pounds 10 ounces, who was born on May 15,
also at Mount Sinai, exhibited more severe symptoms, which necessitated
intravenous, transfusions and nasogastric feeding, in addition
to phototherapy.
Happily, on May 27, he was discharged, but his mother cautions
new parents: "Be aware of signs of jaundice in your newborn,
including lethargy, which can appear as if you have a quiet,
sleepy, good baby."
