New Year's baby slow coming, but six days ahead of schedule
By Randy RICHMOND, Free Press Reporter, Mon., January 2, 2006
The London area's New Year's baby has a better sense of timing
than doctors, nurses and her own parents.
Jaime Leigh
HOOPER was born at four minutes after midnight New
Year's Day in London, three full days after her mom was admitted
to hospital and 18 hours after labour was induced.
And six days early.
"It wasn't planned," proud dad Steve
HOOPER said yesterday, holding
the seven-pound, 12-ounce and 22.5-inch long newest citizen of
Komoka.
"Nobody knew it would be that close."
Jaime was due January 6.
But mom Laura was admitted to Victoria Hospital Thursday because
of high blood pressure.
Medical staff decided to induce labour.
"They were going to induce Thursday night or Friday night, but
it was so busy it kept getting put back," said Laura, 33, an
office administrator with
BDO
Dunwoody in London.
Instead, Laura was induced at 4: 30 a.m. on Saturday.
That should have been enough time to have a baby long before
the New Year rang in when the clock turned to Sunday.
"We were hoping to be done by the middle of Saturday afternoon,"
said Steve, 34, a technician with Reliance Home Comfort.
As the day wore on and night approached, Steve began to wonder
about his child becoming the New Year's baby.
Laura did not.
"I was too busy," she said with a laugh.
"She didn't care what time it was," Steve recalled. "She just
wanted the baby out."
As the parents of London's New Year's baby, the couple received
some gifts from London Health Sciences Centre and a lot of media
attention.
"You are the most special girl this time of the year. Yes you
are," Steve said to a sleeping Jaime, the couple's first child,
yesterday.
But the big crowds were still to come.
With five sisters, one step-sister and one step-brother, Laura
was expecting a busy first day of the year.
In the midst of yesterday's attention, all three
HOOPERs looked
remarkably calm.
"See me in a couple of days when I'm home," Laura quipped.

Nettie McELWAIN celebrates a century of living
Stayner resident came to Canada by ship with her parents as a
young girl
By Michael
GENNINGS,
Page 1
Nettie McELWAIN celebrated a special occasion in Stayner on Friday.
The Blue Mountain Manor resident, a native of Scotland, turned
100 years old.
Creemore resident Tim
ARMOUR, a master of the bagpipes, piped
McELWAIN to the retirement home dining room for her birthday
lunch.
McELWAIN, wearing a blue pant suit, was touched by the music
and at one point smiled, clapped and attempted to do a jig.
Using a walker, the newest member of the elite triple digit club
made her way to lunch under her own steam.
Joined by about a dozen family members, along with her Friends
at the manor,
McELWAIN sat at a table decorated with pink and
purple balloons and a vase of pink roses. In front of her plate
were birthday cards.
Clearview Township councillor Robert
WALKER was on hand for the
occasion and officially congratulated
McELWAIN on behalf of the
municipality. He presented her with a plaque to mark the milestone
birthday as well.
Because McELWAIN is hard of hearing, her niece Joan
McELWAIN,
of Wasaga Beach, spoke with The Sun.
She said that her aunt came to Canada at the age of 15. She traveled
here with her parents aboard a steamship that landed in Halifax,
Nova Scotia.
The family --
McELWAIN is the youngest of four -- settled in
London and then lived in a number of other places.
McELWAIN (née
HOPKINS) married her husband Russell in Elmvale
on April 1, 1929. The couple were married in the Presbyterian
Church and settled on a farm near Phelpston. They had no children,
McELWAIN's niece said.
While on the farm her aunt ran the home and when needed helped
with farm work. She interrupted her niece at one point Friday
to note she'd milked cows and fed pigs when younger.
She was also active in the Women's Institute and has toured substantially.
McELWAIN has visited Florida, Scotland, various countries in
Europe and Asia, and the West Coast of Canada.
While not able to make such trips now because of her age,
McELWAIN
still enjoys knitting and playing euchre or bingo with Friends
and family, her niece said.
Councillor Robert
WALKER said he's played cards socially with
McELWAIN and added that she's very astute when it comes to euchre.
McELWAIN has been a widow since her husband died of a heart attack
on Halloween in 1965. The year after his death, she moved to
an apartment in Barrie and later one in Stayner.
Ten years ago she moved to Blue Mountain Manor, her niece said,
after falling at home. The fall resulted in a trip to Collingwood
General and Marine Hospital, the first for a medical reason in
McELWAIN's life, her niece said.
The world was a much different place when
McELWAIN was born.
Wilfrid Laurier, a Liberal from Quebec, was prime minister of
Canada and Theodore Roosevelt, a Democrat from New York, was
president of the United States.
Sitting on the throne in England was King Edward VII, the eldest
son of Queen Victoria.
So what does
McELWAIN credit with getting her through the first
100 years?
Clean living and the occasional dram of scotch whisky, according
to family who have discussed the question with her in the past.
