108-year-old takes it one day at a time
Mabel SHAW to mark birthday Saturday

One of Canada's oldest residents sees her 108th birthday Saturday as just another day in a long and happy life.
"That's all you can do is live one day at a time. You don't have anything to do with yesterday or tomorrow," Mabel SHAW said at her home in Markdale recently.
She was born Margaret Mabel MATTHEWS in Meaford on July 8, 1898, the oldest of five children to Hannah and Richard and the family's only daughter.
It was a much different world when Mabel married Earl SHAW in 1922, at the age of 24. The family the couple started together in Clarksburg with two children, Velma and Elwood, has grown to include 11 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
"A while ago they made me a great-great-grandmother. It's not everybody that gets that," Mabel said.
Relatively active until past her 100th year, Mabel has lost much of her hearing but is mostly healthy and keeps a keen interest in family activities, her daughter Velma SPENCER said recently.
More than anything else, that large family has been the central focus of her mother's life, said SPENCER, 83.
"The strongest thread in her life is her family," she said. "As long as her family and her Friends were around her, mother was quite content."
SPENCER said the family has a "very strong Irish background" with roots in County Donegal, although Mabel has never been there. She travelled across Canada once, but otherwise travelled relatively little.
The two women, both widowed now, have lived together for several years at 33 Sproule St. in Markdale, where they plan a birthday open house Saturday from 2 to 4 p.m.
"I don't go out any more," Mabel said. "I just stay put. I had my day out, I guess."
Raised on a farm, Mabel SHAW worked as a mother's helper and at several jobs before marriage, then never worked again outside the home, SPENCER said.
In the early years of their marriage, Earl carried the mail in Thornbury and Clarksburg, at first on horseback, then later with a horse-drawn bus.
When their son Elwood came home from the Second World War, he bought a farm and lived and farmed there with his parents until his marriage. Mabel and Earl then spent several years north of Toronto where Earl was a farm manager before buying a farm in the Markdale area in 1963. That was at an age when many people are considering retirement. Instead, her parents farmed that land until her father was in his late 80s, SPENCER said.
"To start farming when you're in your 60s is certainly not what most people would think of as retirement," SPENCER said.
Her father died in 1993 at the age of 92, said SPENCER, who raised two daughters, Janice and Suzanne, with her late husband Douglas SPENCER.
"I think the thing we most appreciate is that mother is in good health, mentally and physically," her daughter said recently.
SPENCER said her mother has lived a happy life. She was always social with Friends and especially family, enjoying community events, card parties and other gatherings. But her life has also been quietly private.
"Mother's main interest in life in my lifetime has just been her family, her Friends, her community," SPENCER said. "She's always been a very private person, just a homebody really."
