Connie VITELLO and Jason HARDING had practised natural birthing techniques and read supportive literature, including Naomi Wolf's Misconceptions.
Confident that deep breathing, visualization and the pain-easing waters of Toronto East General Hospital's whirlpool would facilitate their blessed event, a three-day birthing adventure was not what they envisioned.
"I had an idealistic image of how it was going to go," says Ms. VITELLO, a 31-year-old magazine editor. But after two excruciating days of labour, she thought to herself: "I guess my body wasn't as Mother Earth as I thought, and I was more than happy to have an epidural and succumb to modern medication."
Mr. HARDING, a 34-year-old television editor and owner of Axon Pictures, fainted during the final moments of the ordeal, but recovered in time to see his son, six-pound, eight-ounce Fionn Joseph Jason HARDING, emerge from a four-hour pushing marathon on March 2 with only a broken clavicle. Fionn's trauma behind them, the Leslieville couple wouldn't edit a frame. "He's the most perfect thing we've ever done," Mr. HARDING says.

After breaking Alana HARDY's water to induce labour, staff at Women's College hospital had trouble finding the expectant mother. That's because the 32-year-old elementary school teacher was avoiding them.
It was the night of the two-hour season opener of The Amazing Race and she wanted to catch her favourite show, so she hid out in a small room to watch it with her partner, Tim McNAMARA. Doctors located her after the show ended, and a few hours later she gave birth to Luke McNAMARA, born March 2 weighing 9 pounds, 11 ounces.
While she was eager to watch television, she never expected to be on television herself. But before Ms. HARDY had slept even an hour, staff asked if she would be interviewed on camera about the birth. She assumed the tape would be used to train medical students or hospital staff, so she declined when asked if she wanted to change out of the hospital gown or put on makeup.
"Ten minutes later, in walks CTV News to interview me about the epidural," she says. "Everybody and their neighbour saw it."
In case they didn't, Mr. McNAMARA, also a teacher, has a tape of the newscast at their Etobicoke home.
