Emotionally shaken by the tsunami that struck the Indian Ocean
during their honeymoon, Caroline
GOLDHAR and Brendon
TRAHAN came
home eager to start their family.
Away from the beach scene in Thailand, they didn't get too much
information at first. But what they learned was sobering. "We
were supposed to be in that exact spot just a week later," Ms.
GOLDHAR said.
Two weeks later they were home, Ms.
GOLDHAR at a new job in advertising
while her husband resumed his work in retail design. Although
assuming it would take some time to conceive, the parents still
heeded doctors' warnings about letting tropical-diseases medicines
work out of their systems first.
After that two-month delay, she was pregnant almost immediately.
Rachel Shirley
GOLDHAR was born weeks early on October 25, at
Toronto East General Hospital. The seven pound, three ounce baby
girl was delivered by cesarean section after "fantastic" work
by midwives.

STRBA's 102 years
He's had both 'a tough life and a good life'

Chesley's Liquor Control Board of Ontario outlet sold out of
brandy early in the day on October 20. The reason? It was Mike
STRBA's 102nd birthday.
All of
STRBA's
Friends and family know how much he likes a little
nip of brandy and just how much he likes to share the beverage
with Friends when they visit.
Remarkably spry for his age,
STRBA says he's had both. "a tough
life and a good life.
"You have to work if you want a good life."
STRBA is no stranger to hard work or hard times. He and his brother
Joe left their native Slovakia to come to Canada in 1928.
They ended up in Saskatchewan, where they both worked as farm
hands.
Neither one could speak English and both were lonely for their
wives and, in Mike's case, a young son Steve left behind in "the
old country."
Joe eventually moved to Chesley and two years later, Mike joined
him. Their wives and Mike's two-year-old Steve would eventually
join them and they would begin a new life in Canada.
"That's the best thing I ever did -- come to Canada," he said.
"I like this country.
"In the old country, the rich were rich and the poor were poor.
I would be poor for life, even if I worked hard. Here when you
work hard, you have something."
STRBA recalled working long hours -- 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. -- for
many years.
"I never worked hard, but I worked steady and I worked that way
all my life."
"Life was not easy," he said, as he talked about finding it difficult
to learn English while working as a farmhand. "I learned by listening,
but it was not so easy."
Eventually he learned the language by talking to other people
and listening to the radio and television. He continues to speak
both languages fluently
He recalled working at the Krug Brothers furniture factory in
Chesley for 18 cents an hour for six years and remembers getting
his first raise in pay to 20 cents an hour.
At the time he worked for area farmers to earn some extra money
to buy his own home and a 10-acre parcel of land at the north
end of Chesley. It was there he set up his farm, complete with
chickens, pigs, cows, bee hives, apple and pear trees and a huge
vegetable garden.
"I liked to grow flowers and people would tell me how beautiful
they were... I miss my home," he said. He was able to stay in
his own home and look after himself until a year ago, when he
moved into the Brittany Villa Retirement Home in Chesley.
"I like it here, but I miss my home."
Blessed with remarkably good health,
STRBA says "when you have
your health, you really do have everything. But when you get
old, everything seems to bother you."
STRBA has a son, Steve, who lives in Chesley, (a daughter he
never saw died in infancy in Slovakia) three grandchildren and
six great-grandchildren.
