A London woman had a busy day as she celebrated her 105th birthday
yesterday. Besides accepting the congratulations of well-wishers
dropping by her room at Marian Villa home for the aged, Carmela
FARRUGIA attended a family wedding in London.
But then
FARRUGIA, born in Malta July 5, 1898, likes to keep
active.
And the mother of 10 continues to rule as the matriarch of her
family of eight surviving children -- four daughters and four
sons.
"She still tells us off," said son, Stephen, 69, of London.
His mother continues to take on life with vitality and determination.
"She never gives up," he said.
FARRUGIA could offer no explanation for how she's managed to
live such a long and active life.
"There's no secret," she said.
But she has told Marian Villa staff her secret to longevity is
eating lots of chocolate every day.
She also has a yen for butterscotch candy and keeps a supply
in her room.
Prayer helps her get through the difficult times in life,
FARRUGIA
said.
"If you have something that bothers you, you pray to the Virgin
Mary," she said. "Prayers always give me what I ask for."
FARRUGIA lived on her own in an apartment until the age of 100,
when she fell and broke a hip.
While she was recovering, doctors insisted she should no longer
live on her own and she moved into Marian Villa, part of St.
Joseph's Mount Hope long-term care facility, in 1998.
After living through the terrible years of the Second World War,
FARRUGIA was left to raise her 10 children on her own when her
husband died in 1946. Her youngest was six years old at the time.
Stephen FARRUGIA said his mother managed to send her children
to private schools and did a great job maintaining the family.
"We can't complain, any of us," he said.
Two of the prized possessions in
FARRUGIA's room at Marian Villa
are a photo of herself as a teenager and a family portrait with
her and her eight surviving children, taken on her 100th birthday.
FARRUGIA moved to Canada in 1958 and has lived in London ever
since.
She has come to love Canada, said Stephen
FARRUGIA.

When he's older, the parents of Jackson Carter
FAST can tell
him he appeared in the newspaper. And his father can describe
how keenly the boy's eyes fixed on the phone as the details of
his three-week-old life were discussed.
"He's just in my arms, fascinated by this phone call, staring
at the phone with big eyes, wondering what I'm saying," said
father Garry
FAST, a vice-president at Canadian Imperial Bank
of Commerce.
Jackson was born a week late, on October 28, and heavy -- nearly
nine pounds -- after his mother was induced at Mount Sinai Hospital.
"Everybody always says, 'You can do a birth plan but don't stick
to it,' mother Donna
SCHWEITZER said.
It was a long pregnancy, acknowledged Ms.
SCHWEITZER, who works
in promotions and publicity for Columbia Tristar, and the abnormally
hot temperatures the city endured didn't help. "People who weren't
pregnant were complaining."
Jackson wasn't just heavy; he also measured 21 inches at birth.
His father, a basketball fan, is hoping that he'll end up taller
than the sons of all his ball-loving Friends.
