Blackout didn't stop baby
Heather ENNIS,
Free
Press
Reporter
When the lights went out Thursday, Tiffany and Dean
MAZUR were
in the dark in more ways than one. "I guess I had other things
on my mind," the London mother said yesterday while cradling
her newborn daughter, Stacey, at home.
Not until after the infant's birth did she realize the worst
power failure in North American history had hit most of Ontario
and seven northeastern U.S. states.
"We felt really out of the loop," explained Dean
MAZUR.
Stacey arrived at 6: 22 p.m., just more than two hours after the
city's electricity went out.
"We've been trying to figure out a good nickname for her," the
child's father said. "Like Power Surge or Hydro or something."
After spending the day at a splash pad with her other daughter,
two-year-old Taylor, Tiffany
MAZUR headed home shortly after
4 p.m.
"I guess the power went out somewhere between there and here."
With a "tired and cranky" toddler and no electricity, the mother
didn't have time to think about the contractions she had been
having since morning. She sat in the middle of her living room
floor, rocking Taylor to sleep.
"It was good. She kept me calm because I didn't want to scare
her."
Moments after the blackout, Tiffany's mother called and joked
that she shouldn't have the baby because St. Joseph's hospital
didn't have any power.
Her husband had been at work in Saint Marys, but called to say
he was coming home early because of the blackout.
"Just get home quick," Tiffany
MAZUR told him.
Without a car radio, Dean didn't know how widespread the massive
blackout was. "I had no idea until I hit London."
Even then, neither parent knew the power problems extended beyond
southwestern Ontario.
By the time he got home, Tiffany's mother and a friend were at
his east London home arranging for an ambulance to get his wife
to the hospital.
"We figured it would take us forever to get to the hospital on
our own," said Tiffany.
"I don't remember their names, but I really want to thank the
ambulance people who helped us," said Dean.
Sirens blaring, they rushed to St. Joe's and were greeted by
a darkened emergency room and the prospect of climbing several
flights.
"Luckily, the elevators were working," said Dean.
A backup generator at the hospital kicked in when the lights
went out, so all essential services were operating.
"I knew they'd be prepared for this sort of thing."
All the parents can remember about the room during the 20-minute
delivery was that it was hot -- really hot. Doctors and nurses
used towels to mop moist foreheads.
"We were on the side of the hospital where there was no wind,"
said Dean. "Those poor people who had to deliver the baby --
a big thanks to them."

ENTWISTLE,
Tyler
Tremaine
Breaking news! TSN has just learned that 1 1/2hrs. before the
drop of the puck for the Memorial Cup Championship Game the Ontario
Hockey League's London Knights have confirmed their #1 Draft
Selection.
Tyler
Tremaine
ENTWISTLE was selected at 3: 08 p.m.
on May 29, '05 from (London Health Sciences Centre) Westminster
Campus. At selection time Tyler Stats. 10 pounds 0 oz, 20 in. long
and shoots left. Mom says Tyler's training camp was great but
he started to get aggressive in the corners during the last month.
Older brother Preston says with some rigorous conditioning Tyler
should be able to patrol the blue line alongside himself for
the upcoming season. Special thanks goes out to the scouting
staff, Katherine
WALLACE,
Marie
HATHERALL, Jane
ERDMAN (Woman
Care Midwives) and Carol
PEAT
(Wholistic
Bodyworks) who monitored
Tyler's progress over the past 9 months. Thank you is also in
order to nurse Caroline
DAUGLIS who also assisted in getting
Tyler to the draft table. Coaches Daniel and Janet have signed
Tyler to a personal lifetime contract and have waived the behavioural
clause at this time.
