Rachel CRAIG is a lawyer who likes big challenges.
And what greater challenge can there be than giving birth to your first child? Especially if that child likes a challenge just as much as her mom.
With only two weeks to go, Ms. CRAIG, 30, was told by her doctor that her daughter would breech if a natural birth was attempted. A cesarean section was recommended instead. So Ms. CRAIG tried everything she could think of to turn the baby around.
From standing on her head to burning special herbs around her feet, having acupuncture, visiting a chiropractor, even having her husband, Marc NOUWENS, 30, try to coax the baby into changing position, nothing seemed to work.
"She was certainly determined," Ms. CRAIG recalls. "We tried everything we could think of, even playing music and talking to the lower side of my abdomen," hoping the child would follow the sound around, Ms. CRAIG says.
With less than a week left to the due date, Ms. CRAIG agreed to the cesarean, and on February 14, 2006, coincidentally her mother's birthday, Maike Ceanna Hepburn NOUWENS was born.
The new parents have agreed to give Maike a few years as the baby in the family, but already Ms. CRAIG says she's definitely up for another chance to give birth naturally -- and in her own home next time.

Charlie arrived, ahead of schedule, at 9: 04 a.m. G.M.T., Friday, March 18th at the Rotunda Hospital Dublin, Ireland. At birth he weighed 6 pounds 15 ounces and was 22 inches long. Charlie is welcomed into the world by proud grandparents Marilyn and Bob BLACKWELL of London and Maureen and David CRANE of Burlington, as well as by his four aunts, three uncles and seven cousins. Jordie and Wendy look forward to introducing baby Charlie to Friends and family in Canada this summer.
