ENG, Caitlyn Gwen-Lei -- Hatch:
By Oliver MOORE,
Saturday,
July 9, 2005, Page M4
It was the fear of gossip that drove Sunnybrook and Women's College
doctor Betty
CHEN to give birth in another hospital.
Well, partly, she also didn't want special treatment just because
she is a physician.
"I didn't really want to be where I work," she said this week.
"I wanted people to be objective about my care."
As both a mother and a doctor, Dr.
CHEN figured that she knew
the drill going in, but she was surprised at how quickly her
second daughter appeared on the scene.
Dr. CHEN, 34, said she had been expecting a day or two of labour,
but little Caitlyn Gwen-Lei appeared in a rush. Only five pounds,
15 ounces, she was born mere hours after the expectant mother
turned up at Mount Sinai Hospital.
"I'm a family doctor who delivers babies as part of my practice.
I was totally prepared and knew what to expect," she said. "It
just totally exceeded all my expectations, it was so fast."
Caitlyn joins a growing North Toronto family that already includes
two-year-old Lisa and Ken ENG, 33, Dr.
CHEN's ophthalmologist
husband.

'I will take care of you forever'
Toronto woman goes to China for her adopted child
New mom is heartbroken for biological parents
After spending two years and $50,000 on unsuccessful fertility
treatments, veteran journalist Wei
CHEN, 38, and her husband
of a decade, Michael
POLLARD, 37, decided to adopt a baby from
China.
Just two months after filing an application through Children's
Bridge, one of four agencies licensed by Ontario's Ministry of
Community, Family and Children's Services to carry out adoptions
from China, they were matched with Yue Dong Liang. Their file
was expedited because
CHEN was born in Taiwan.
Last week, the couple flew to China, along with 22 other "C-Bridgers"
to legally adopt the 11-month-old they have renamed Jensen in
honour of CHEN's paternal grandfather.
It's cost them $25,000 to become parents; the tally includes
travel expenses and a $4,000 (U.S.) donation to one of the many
orphanages that house girls abandoned due to the one-child policy
in a culture that treasures sons.
Upon arrival in Changsha, in south central China, the land of
CHEN's father, their daughter is delivered to them a day earlier
than expected. Here are excerpts from Toronto 1 anchor
CHEN's
diary:
Sunday, October 12
7 p.m. -- Dolton Hotel, 22nd floor conference room
There she was in her nanny's arms. She looked so forlorn and
so teeny and fragile in her nubby cobalt blue sleeper. I reached
out my arms to see if she would come to me. She reached up her
tiny perfect hand and gently placed it on my mouth. She smelled
like rice. I've held many babies over the years, including four
nephews, but this was completely different.
I was sobbing uncontrollably, choking on my words as I tried
to tell her who I was. I think the only words I was able to blurt
out were, "I've waited so long for you. I'm your mom. I will
take care of you forever."
I am so deliriously happy, so grateful and yet also heartbroken
at the thought of what my gift cost someone else. I'll never
know why her mother gave her up. She will never know the magnitude
of her gift to me.
Jensen was quite stoic when we returned to our room. She looked
around the room. She looked at us. She looked very unsure of
things.
The hotel doctor said her laboured breathing and runny nose were
just remnants of a cold, but it meant the first sleepless night
of parenthood. We were up every hour or so after she went to
sleep at 9 p.m.
I stroked her head. I rubbed her back. I pulled icky boogers
from her nose. Even when she wasn't fussing I was up. I watched
her sleep. I listened to her breathe.
Monday, October 13
6 a.m. -- Hotel restaurant
At breakfast we catch up with other families. Carla and Sean
from Newfoundland got the brush off from their daughter last
night. "Yup. It was the arms crossed, back straight as a board
and I'll have nothing to do with you," said Sean.
3 p.m. -- Changsha Civil Affairs Office
More documents to sign. Our fingerprints are taken. The adoption
is almost complete. I leave Michael to deal with the final portion
-- the fees. Very out of character for me, but I did not grill
him for details when he came back. It's awkward. People hear
the word 'money' or 'donation' and will think that money changed
hands after an exchange of goods, but the donations we make contribute
to the care of other babies in the orphanage, and we pay fees
to cover the government's administrative costs.
5: 30 p.m. -- Room 2411
I decide to feed Jensen some mashed banana. She scrunches up
her face at first, and then reaches out for the spoon. I give
her a crumb from a cracker and she giggles. Giggles. Pure joy!
She went into hysterics when I sang ba-na-nana (like Beethoven's
Fifth). Then it was jumping up and down on the bed with daddy
holding her hands in the air. This cannot be topped. Not ever!
Not until the next thing she does.
Tuesday, October 14
2 a.m. -- Room 2411
We shot straight up in bed when we heard Jensen wailing. It was
piercing and mournful. Her eyes weren't open. She was inconsolable.
The tears streamed down her face, her tiny body trembling from
the force of her cries. What caused this? Did she miss her nanny?
Was this all too much for her?
I held her in my arms while Michael gently caressed her head.
When she finally settled down, I placed her back in the crib.
Jensen put her arm over her face, rubbing her sleeve across her
nose, searching for a familiar scent. She then rolled across
to the other side of the crib where we had placed the sleeper
she was wearing when we received her. Her sobbing dissolved into
tiny whimpers as she nestled her whole face into the sleeper,
taking in every trace of her old smell, as if it were life-giving
oxygen.
2 p.m. -- Room 2602
We went to our guide's room to pick up the adoption documents
that were processed yesterday. They don't seem like much -- papers
with red seals and Chinese writing -- these bits and pieces that
comprise Jensen's history.
But one piece of paper devastated me: it was Jensen's birth note.
I knew when I read her file two months ago that she'd been found
with a note attached to her, along with a bottle and some milk
powder, I just didn't expect to see what I did -- the only thing
written on the scrap of paper was 'born November 27, 2002.'
I could barely get the words out to my husband: "Her note, her
birth note, it didn't even have anything personal," I cried.
"Nothing. Not even: 'We loved her.'"
"Would that have been better?" Michael asks softly. "Would that
have been any easier to read?"

9: 30 a.m. -- Sightseeing
Judging from the numbers at breakfast, there have to be hundreds
of visitors here, all adopting babies from local orphanages.
Our tour guide says locals have grown accustomed to this trend
and welcome the foreigners, knowing they've come to give those
children a home.
That may be true, but I have seen white couples being stared
at, and comments made in Chinese that sound disdainful at best.
I feel bad. Oh, I get my share of sniffs when I speak English
and people assume I don't speak Chinese, or the odd "is that
a Chinese baby?" (I always find that one amusing... either way,
wouldn't it be?) Still, it reminds me how lucky I am that I may
never have to deal with the type of reaction other (non-Asian)
adoptive parents may face.
I was kind of disappointed when I first arrived, here and in
Shanghai, because it seemed like anywhere else in the developed
world. I was so looking forward to being transported to a different
time; perhaps I romanticized too much about returning to my roots.
Walking along Nan King Road in Shanghai Sunday afternoon, I saw
young people with dyed hair and piercings carrying bags of McDonald's
takeout -- completely Westernized. It's quite ironic when you
consider how much attention is focused on adoptive parents maintaining
their Chinese child's heritage and culture.
Thursday, October 16
11 a.m. -- Yue Yang Social Welfare Institute
A two-hour bus ride north takes me to Jensen's orphanage. I had
reservations about bringing her back here, so she and Michael
stayed behind.
Once we get outside Changsha, rural China unfolds. These are
the images I had in my head: rice paddies, stepped fields, oxen,
leather-skinned locals carrying homemade baskets like a scale
across their backs, cigarettes dangling from their lips. I know,
it seems so stereotypical; I don't know why I was so eager to
see that, I just know I was comforted having done so.
I scan the little faces of the orphans trying to discern if they're
happy. They seemed to be. The cynic in me countered with a reminder
that it was official "visiting" day and what I saw could've been
a display. I parried that one with the fact that Jensen's behaviour
is the best proof of care.
In the nursery I find two nannies cradling babies.
"Do you remember a Yue Dong Liang?" I ask eagerly in Mandarin.
"Oh, yes. I looked after her," says one and directs me to a pink
crib that still has my daughter's name on it.
As my eyes focused on the pattern of the sheets in her crib,
I suddenly realized why Jensen goes nowhere without the only
toy I brought with me from Toronto - the little stuffed animal
she clutches by the ear and snuggles with every night.
Here in the crib that was, until now, the only home she's ever
known, was bedding with smiling pink bunny rabbits, like the
one I gave her the night we met.
I miss her. Can't wait to get back to Changsha.
Friday, October 17
Midnight -- Jian Guo Hotel, Beijing
We're exhausted after travelling all day. Here in Beijing we'll
complete the medical and paperwork to facilitate Jensen's immigration
to Canada.
Saturday, October 18
8: 30 a.m. -- International
SOS
Clinic,
Exam
Room 2
Jensen didn't flinch when the nurse pricked her big toe for a
blood test. She weighs 7.3 kg and is 168 cm long. Dr. Lucy
CHEN
is from Montreal. She told us that in terms of size Jensen is
in the fifth percentile for her age. I'm disappointed since I'm
used to hearing Friends talk about their babies being in the
95th percentile.
The doctor got me to hold Jensen while she rang bells on either
side of her to test her hearing. I had to prevent myself from
not signalling her one way or the other. I felt like it was a
test and I wanted her to do well.
I walked out the office with a bounce in my step after Dr.
CHEN
pronounced her "a healthy little girl."
