BARRIE, Ken - Happy 80th Birthday
On June 16, 1925 in Norwood, Ontario, Ken BARRIE arrived. After graduation Ken joined International Harvester Co. as Service Supervisor. He travelled extensively. Ken and Pat rolled on many miles covering extremities of U.S. and Canada - Took in 4 World Expositions, Ken travelled to N.W.T. in 1981 right up to Inuvik. When we were posted to London, Bruce and Dale completed our family and Ken, a dedicated dad, passing on his engine and mechanical aptitude. We loved London and and Ken joined London Life as life underwriter, also acquiring his C.L.U. designation.
Many more miles to our cottage at Kosh Lake, Peterborough County, where both boys became excellent water skiers. On retirement Ken's health was not golden, however his patience with genealogy, Red Iron Collectors finds him with Friends across Canada. After years as a tree planter and crew supervisor, Cheryl McGOWAN was pretty sure she would be able to handle the rigours of parenting.
"I remember one season that was pretty hellish and I thought, 'If I can do this, I can survive the first few months of mommyhood,' " the Guelph resident says. "After planting, most people feel pretty invincible."
Born October 3, Benjamin North McGowan BARTRAM is already comfortable outside. Today should find him at the local farmers' market, where his 38-year-old mom will be selling her beeswax candles.
Ms. McGOWAN and her husband, David BARTRAM, 41, wrestled with the idea of having a child. The two had carved out a pleasant life together. But once they made the decision, they were expecting almost immediately. "It was about two days," he remembers.
It was the couple's love of nature that inspired them to choose the name North. It was almost Benjamin's first name, Ms. McGOWAN says. "We chickened out. We were worried it was a bit of an 'Apple' -- you know, Gwyneth Paltrow's baby."
