Retirement home marks occasion

In the steamy lounge at Oshawa's Cedarcroft Place retirement home, you could have forgiven Dwight WILSON if he'd slept through the endless speeches and music marking his 105th birthday yesterday.
He was getting over a bout of pneumonia that his son Paul feared might have ended the ceremony before it even began.
But while folks half his age wilted in the heat, the World War I vet -- one of only three surviving Canadians who served in the Great War -- tapped his toes, waved his hands and sang along to "If I Loved You," from Carousel and other favourites like "Old Man River."
And when they hauled out a huge cake bearing a picture of him blowing a bugle atop an old army steed, he jabbed a thumb to his chest and uttered his only words of the afternoon.
"I'm on that horse," he said.
WILSON's voice is fading, along with memories of the days he sang at Massey Hall, years after he returned from war and hung up his army bugle.
He enlisted in Toronto with the 69th artillery battery when he was just 15, three years too young to go overseas. He was found out in 1917, a year after he boarded a troop ship for England, and was sent back to Canada. He nefariously signed on again when he was still too young, but the war ended before he could across the Atlantic.
When Word War II started, he tried to sign up with the army again, but this time he was too old. So he joined the Perth Regiment reserves, rising to the rank of captain.
"He's really quite amazing," said son Paul WILSON, 71, of Port Perry.
WILSON was also fêted by Greg THOMPSON/THOMSON/TOMPSON/TOMSON, federal minister of veterans affairs, who called him "an amazing piece of history.
"You were one of 650,000 Canadians who served in the First World War. It's wonderful that you continue to share your story with Canadians, in order that we not forget the contribution and sacrifice made by veterans like yourself."
And now just three survive.
Besides WILSON, Lloyd CLEMETT, 107, lives in Toronto and John BABCOCK, also 105, lives in Spokane, Washington.
Perhaps the most moving words came from Richard BRILLY, 13: "Great-grandfather is Superman."

The Toronto Bond Traders' black-tie dinner at the Four Seasons Hotel buzzed with expected new issues, and when attendee John BYRD, 35, of RBC Capital arrived home at 1 a.m. that April 8, his wife was on the verge of her own new issue. Her water had just broken.
"I never snapped out of a late-night haze as fast as I did that night," he says, laughing as he recalls how he whisked Carol BAGOZZI, 33, of TD Securities, to Mount Sinai Hospital.
At 4: 21 p.m. that day, 7 pound, 8 ounce Kaitlyn Rose BYRD arrived by cesarean section.
The Summerhill neighbourhood couple met while working overseas in London, returned to Toronto, and married on May 27, 2005, at Casa Loma.
"As tradition goes, you are supposed to get your wife paper for your first anniversary, so I thought [getting] something published would be a nice surprise," Mr. BYRD says.
We agree.
