In the census records of Markham (1852-1881) the only family of that name
is that of Arthur
ALEXANDER, born in Ireland c1800, with a wife Sarah born
in Canada c1823. By 1861 they had, with 4 others, a daughter Emma born c1857.
The 1857 Directory lists Arthur
ALEXANDER of Cashel, York Co, Postmaster
& storekeeper (he was appointed the first postmaster of the Cashel Post Office,
which opened in 1851). By 1871 Sarah was a widow. The cemetery at Cashel has
no Alexander gravestones, but it is the resting place of James
MUSTARD
(cl768-1858) and members of his family. Born in Cromarty, Scotland,
he came to Markham Township in 1800 via Pennsylvania, according to his gravestone.
