He enlisted in 1916 as William George
HOLTOUM and gave his next of kin as Mary
HOLTOUM
(evidently unaware that she had died in 1913.) Ancestry's transcription as
HALTOUM is understandable.
By the way, he served in WW2 under the name William
HOLTUM -- his next of kin was Freda
HOLTUM.
