FYI: Webinar on Indexing for the OGS TONI project

Another webinar on Indexing for the OGS TONI project is being held for Ottawa Branch volunteers but we welcome all other interested members to join us. This session will include a short description of the project and then a demonstration on how to index a document in order to add it to The Ontario Name Index (TONI).

The webinar is scheduled for Tuesday 22 Jan 2013 at 7:30pm and will be hosted in the Ottawa Branch Live Meeting Room.

Speaker: Kurt Johnson

Brief Overview:

Shipping out to Canada in 1805, the new 100th Regiment of 900 Irish soldiers aboard five troopships met with maritime disasters in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Only seven survived one shipwreck off Newfoundland while 340 men, women and children on that tall ship died. Two other troopships were wrecked off Nova Scotia. This talk will be presented by historical researcher, and Board Member of the Goulbourn Museum, Kurt Johnson.

Heritage Event for the Weekend of: October 27, 2012

The Vankleek Hill Family History Weekend is taking place this Saturday, October 27th through to Sunday the 28th.  The Ottawa Branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society will be in attendance with some OGS publications and maybe an answer or two for some of your genealogical queries. Other activities to choose from include:

Antiques Appraisal at St. John Anglican Church Hall. 

  • Two Sessions:
    • Morning 10:00 am – Noon
    • Afternoon, 1:00pm – 3:00pm
  • Appraiser: Janet Carlile, an independent, Sotheby’s-accredited antiques appraiser, best known for her tours with the Canadian Antiques Roadshow
  • Pricing: As a fundraiser in support of the Vankleek Hill Museum, $10 per item for a maximum of 3 items per person. With three items you get free entry to Sunday’s paper conservation workshop!

Harold MacMillan brings ‘the Gaelic’ to life!

  • Overview: Harold returns to the Vankleek Hill Museum to introduce you to the unique history of this language in our region, and to teach you familiar Gaelic phrases.

Paper & Photo Preservation Workshop

  • Date: Sunday, October 28, 2012
  • Time: 1 :30 p.m.
  • Location: Vankleek Hill Community Centre
  • Pricing: For $10, bring your paper-based treasures to learn more about care, keeping and preservation methods. 
  • Overview: Kyla Ubbink, an accredited and certified conservator who has helped restore art by Picasso and Warhol, will be at the Community Centre. This is a 90-minute workshop presentation on how to preserve your photos, albums, scrapbooks for future generations. It finishes with a question period.
