FYI: Upcoming Festive Heritage Events

Santa is coming to town and that can only mean one thing: It’s officially the Christmas Season!  Time to put up the lights, dig out the decorations, and of course, enjoy all the festive activities the season has to offer.  Newmarket gets into the spirit this weekend with their annual Santa Claus Parade on November 17th.  This also kicks off the Elman W. Campbell Museum‘s Gallery of Festive Trees. Whether your style is Victorian, Edwardian, or Retro, there’s something to inspire everyone!

The Gallery opens on November 17th, the same day as the Santa Claus parade.  Admission is Free.

Santa must really like Newmarket because he’s making a return visit.  On December 1st, the Friends of the Museum will be hosting Breakfast with Santa! Admission to this event includes a Continental Breakfast, Photo Opportunity with Santa and Museum admission.

Breakfast will be available at 8:30a.m. and 9:30a.m.

Tickets are $10.00 per person.

Tickets must be purchased in advance.

This is a popular event, please make your arrangements early to avoid disappointment.

Victorian Christmas

Beginning on Saturday, December 1, 2012 and running through to Tuesday, January 1, 2013,
enjoy the sights and scents of the Victorian Christmas tradition. Visit London’s oldest family residence and experience the beautiful holiday decorations of the past. A special Christmas exhibition of family artifacts will be on display upstairs.

Christmas Centre Piece Workshop

On Sunday December 2nd, from 1:00 to 3:00 pm, the Eldon House Interpretive Centre is holding a Christmas Centre Piece Workshop. Learn how to create a Victorian table centerpiece using nature’s gifts. Take your masterpiece home to decorate that special spot.

Heritage Events for the Weekend of: October 27, 2012

It must be Halloween! Several Ontario Museums are hosting ghoulish events this weekend:

If you are going to be in the Newmarket area this Saturday, October 27, drop by the Elman W. Campbell Museum, between 7:00 and 8:30 pm, and join in their Spooktacular Halloween Party.  Children aged 4 to 10 are invited to come in costume for games, craft, costume parade and a Hallowe’en story.

Admission is $5.50 per child. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

The Museum is located at 134 Main Street South, Newmarket. Pre-registration is required.

Over in Kirby, the Clarke Museum is holding its 10th Annual Historic Pumpkin Bee.  The Clarke Museum is located at, 7086 Old Kirby School Road, Kirby Ontario.  The event runs from 11:00 am – 4:00pm. 

Throughout the day, you can watch a blacksmith work, carve your own pumpkin for Halloween, have your face painted, make a pioneer toy, or play traditional games from the 1800s. Treat your palette to seasoned pumpkin seeds roasted over an open fire. Tour our traditional one-room schoolhouse, sit at an antique desk, and try writing on a genuine slate board.

Admission to the event is $4.00 per person.  The Museum Gift Shop will be open with a selection of local history books and unique Canadian handicrafts.

Have you ever wanted to go on a ghost hunt? Now’s your chance.  On Sunday, October 28th, Eldon House in London, Ontario, is hosting the Great Eldon House Ghost Hunt.  Tour the house with a special “ghost map” and visit Roxanne Lutz and Alex Chartrand in Eldon House’s Interpretive Centre to discover more about the most famous Eldon House ghost, Wenman Wynniatt.

You can hunt for ghosts between the hours of 1:00 pm – 4:00pm.  Admission is by donation.

Heritage Events for the Weekend of: Sept 29, 2012

Looking for something to do in the Newmarket area this weekend?  Check out the Elman W. Campbell Museum’s Rebel Heartland 1837 Event.  The south end of Fairy Lake Park will be transformed into a 19th century military encampment, and later in the afternoon, there will be a reenactment of the Battle of Montgomery’s Tavern.

Adding to the festivities will be wagon rides and performances by Scottish country dancers and the Newmarket Citizens Band.  2012 marks the 175th Anniversary of the Rebellion, so don’t miss this once-in-a-lifetime commemoration!
