FYI: Update on latest Vital Statistics release from Archives of Ontario

Wednesday, October 10th, 2012

The good news is that a new year’s worth of vital statistics has now been made available to researchers; 1914 Births, 1929 Marriages and 1939 Deaths. The bad news is that you will not be able to purchase microfilm reels for this new release from the OGS as the Archives of Ontario is not making them available for sale.  You must visit the reading room at the Archives of Ontario if you wish to consult these records.  Alternatively, you can check with your local library or archives and see if you can borrow the microfilm reels through the microfilm interloan service.

If you wish more information on how to access these new records you can either consult the AAO website: http://www.archives.gov.on.ca/english/archival-records/interloan/vsmain.aspx, or contact them directly at: reference@ontario.ca

Good luck with your research.

Tuesday, October 9th, 2012

As you may be aware, the Keffer Writing Contest 2012—which is open to all Ontario Genealogical Society (OGS) members—is accepting essays up until 01 November 2012.

As it says in the notice on the OGS website, “The purpose of this contest is to recognize unpublished genealogical writing by awarding winning authors with substantial prizes and by publishing their essays in Families. A generous benefaction from Marion Keffer, a long-time OGS member and genealogist par excellence, provides these prizes”.

“Last year, 13 people entered their essays in the contest, and the first four winners won prizes ranging from $100 cash and 2 annual OGS memberships for the first prize, to $25.00 for the fourth-place prize”, says Elizabeth Lapointe, Editor of Families.

To refresh your memory, you can read the rules for entry on page 31 in the August 2012 edition of Families, or online at the OGS website: http://www.ogs.on.ca/home/essay.php.

FYI: War of 1812 Heritage Society

Thursday, October 4th, 2012

It’s never been a better time to apply for the War of 1812 Heritage Society. You, and anyone you know, can qualify for this Society by proving to genealogical standards of evidence that you have an ancestor who fought to preserve the freedom of Canada during the War of 1812.  If your ancestor was a member of any branch of the British Military during the War of 1812, that qualifies. They may be a British Soldier based in (what is now) Canada during the war years, a member of a Canadian militia unit that saw action during the war, a member of the Royal Navy, or a native who saw action on the British side during the war.

Applications received and approved in 2012 will be dated as issued during the first year of the War of 1812 bicentennial anniversary, but rest assured that the War of 1812 Heritage Society will remain open in the years to come and certificates will be issued on an ongoing basis.

Please see the OGS website for the application form.
