The Ulster Historical Foundation

The Ulster Historical Foundation is a long-established, highly reputable research and publishing agency. It offers extensive knowledge on the sources available for tracing Irish and Scots-Irish ancestors.

We are an educational non-profit organisation. Our aim is to encourage an interest in the history of the province of Ulster; promote a positive image of Northern Ireland overseas; strengthen the links between Ireland and those of Ulster descent; broaden access to historical documents and records for Irish and Scots-Irish genealogy; and to inspire pride in Irish and Ulster heritage and culture.

We also organise several activity holidays throughout the year. Our genealogical summer school in June is already sold out but we are also running one in October which will focus on both family history and emigration.

This is a joint project between the Ulster Historical Foundation and the Centre for Migration Studies at the Ulster American Folk Park, Omagh. It will run from the 9th to the 15th October 2011 and will be based in Omagh, County Tyrone.

If you are interested in finding out more about your Ulster ancestors or wish to explore the history of Ireland’s northern province this is the perfect opportunity in which to do so. Over six days you will be assisted to carry out research for yourself as well as discover the history of Ulster first hand through excursions to some of the province’s most historic sites. In the evenings you can relax and enjoy some entertaining and enlightening talks and discussions.

This is a unique activity holiday which caters for all abilities and levels of interest. The autumn school itinerary can be viewed at:

 www.ancestryireland.com/autumnschool

If the dates of this tour do not suit, we will be running a series of activity holidays throughout 2012 or we can also create an itinerary specifically for your group or clan reunion. In addition we offer bespoke family history packages for individuals as well as high-end luxury Ulster-Scots tours. Further information can be obtained through our website www.ancestryireland.com

The Foundation is also a leading publisher of Irish history books and genealogical guides with over 200 titles in our backlist. Details of our publications can be found at: www.booksireland.org.uk

Halton Digital Newspaper Archive

On Wed., January 19, 2011, the Halton Hills Library held the official launch of their segment of the Halton Digital Newspaper Archive. This project was completed using software technologies and hosting by Our Ontario as a service of Knowledge Ontario and the financial support of the Halton-Peel Branch OGS.

A number of years ago Halton-Peel Branch received a financial bequest from a member with the condition that it be used to provide genealogical resources for people to use in their research. After searching for the best places to use this gift, we decided to support the digitization of the newspapers from the area that is now Halton Hills. This includes newspapers like the Acton Free Press, The Georgetown Herald, The Acton Tanner, The Georgetown Independent and many others.

The collection is on-line now at http://news.halinet.on.ca/search. There are a few areas that need fixing but it is essentially complete from ca. 1867 to 1967. You can now search this collection of newspapers by word or browse by year or day. Often there are images of the actual page from the newspaper so you can read the full text. The OCR software fails occasionally but is very good so there are not many search errors.

Letter from Interlink Bookshop, Victoria BC To all of our customers; Interlink Bookshop has been serving the genealogical community since 1988, and Genealogy Unlimited has been around since 1974. Thanks to the support of our customers, our business has become one of the true veterans in family history.
But to everything, there is a season, and that applies to our business as well. We are planning to close in the fall. Sales have fallen to the point where the venture no longer makes sense. Running the business takes a huge amount of time, but after paying the bills, there is nothing left for us. While we have always seen this as a service, rather than a get-rich-quick scheme, there is simply no point in continuing. This does not mean we will end our involvement with genealogy. Dave will continue to speak at conferences, and will continue to write books and magazine articles -- in fact, now he will have more time for that. After we close the business we will continue to sell his books through his personal website, www.daveobee.com and of course, there is still a lot of research to be done!
We are planning to add a few new titles, in small quantities, in the next few weeks. We still believe, after all, in the importance of quality genealogical reference material. Within a couple of months, however, we will start clearing out as much of our inventory as we can. We will also stop replenishing our stock, so if there is something you would like to order, you would be well advised to order it sooner rather than later. Thank you for all of your support over the years. Dixie & Dave Obee

Canadian Genealogy Survey Announcement

We are two academics and researchers at Carleton University in Ottawa, Del Muise and Leighann Neilson.  We are conducting an online survey of family historians in order to learn more about the practice of genealogy in Canada today.  We are asking for your help to spread the word about our survey to your members.

Since we launched the survey online a couple of weeks ago, over 500 people have completed it. While we originally concentrated our efforts on Nova Scotia, where we both live during the summer, we have received responses from people around the globe who are interested in taking the survey. We are now expanding our search for willing respondents to include the whole country, as well as genealogists elsewhere who might be interested in Canadian lines.

We are hoping to prevail upon you to distribute information about the survey to your members in whatever way you think most convenient and effective.  A mention in your fall newsletter would be appreciated; or if you have an e-mail distribution list that would be even better.  Any announcement that will give members the chance to learn about the survey and perhaps take it would be enormously helpful to us.  We are hoping that we can keep the survey live until sometime in November; so it would be best if members were made aware of the survey before then.

The purpose of the survey in to capture as much information as possible on the practice of genealogy, particularly as it is being transformed by new media in Canada.  It also looks to find out some of the motivational factors for undertaking genealogy.  There are several questions that are demographic in nature to allow us to do some sort of profile of who is going genealogy; and a few questions are open ended, allowing for some extended discussion of various topics.  All in all, we have found it takes about twenty minutes to complete; somewhat less if one says little in the open-ended questions and perhaps a bit longer if one is more detailed in the open-ended questions.

The survey is available at: http://www.cusurveycentre.ca/gensurvey

A blog about the research allows us to comment on how things are progressing.  It is available at: http://genealogyincanada.blogspot.com/

If you have any questions about the survey, we are happy to answer them.

Del can be reached at delmuise@rogers.com and you can reach me at leighann_neilson@carleton.ca

Toronto Branch of OGS

Toronto Branch of OGS completes 20-year project with release of transcription of St. John’s Norway Cemetery and Crematorium
The Toronto Branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society is pleased to announce the release of a major new cemetery publication – the transcription of the monuments in St. John’s Norway Cemetery and Crematorium
.
St. John’s Norway Cemetery, also known as St. John the Baptist Norway Cemetery or St. John’s Cemetery, Berkeley, was originally established as an Anglican churchyard in 1853 on three acres of land. It is now inter-denominational, and its grounds have expanded to cover about 35 acres of land at the corner of Kingston Road and Woodbine Avenue in Toronto’s east end.

The transcription of this cemetery was a massive project that took two decades to complete and involved dozens of dedicated volunteers. The transcription is 3454 pages in length and contains about 55,000 names in its index. It has been published on CD only, in a fully searchable PDF format. The cost is $30.00 plus $2.50 postage and handling.
To find out how to order the St. John’s Norway Cemetery transcription (Publication number TRN-009), visit the Cemetery Publications page on the Toronto Branch website at
